24.01.2022 My mum’s father came from Kirriwirri in the North. I can paint that way too. I like painting, it’s a good way to learn from old people, keep the stories going. Yunkurra (Billy Atkins), my nyamu [grandfather], he’s guiding me about what I can paint and share. My closest family is the Taylor mob; uncle Muuki, Wokka, and Ngalangka. They help me too. - Cyril Whyoulter Cyril is pictured at Wantili with his grandmother, senior Martumili Artist Bugai Whyoulter. They share a special affinity for painting and collaborating with another. View Cyril's work on display at The Goods Shed as part of our current exhibition What Now?

20.01.2022 Earlier this month we worked with the Town of Claremont to facilitate a transformation of the Friends of Lake Claremont shed. Featuring a Carnaby’s black cockatoo, western snake-necked turtle, bobtail lizard, Australian reed warbler and the froggatti cuckoo bee, this beautiful work painted by Brenton See is a celebration of the unique wildlife that call Lake Claremont home. 19.01.2022 "The Last Swans" Amok Island's new work on Northam's Flour Mill is a tribute to the only white swans living in the wild in Australia, and their home on the banks of the Avon River. Built in 1867, the Northam Flour Mill is a well-loved major landmark of historical significance. It has provided employment for local people in the town and surrounding area for over 140 years, and was responsible for generating Northam’s first electricity. The mill has undergone multiple changes i...n ownership and renovations but one thing remains constant, its status as a symbol of the importance of agriculture, in particular wheat, for the town and Shire of Northam. To glean more of an insight into the work, listen to Michelle Stanley's Interview with Amok Island on ABC Midwest and Wheatbelt's Breakfast show here http://ow.ly/aH2z50Cmpg3. The interview begins at around the 38 minute mark.

17.01.2022 Painting and documenting the flora and fauna of Western Australia is Brenton See's way of telling the world how lucky we are to share our planet with such wonders. 16.01.2022 We first collaborated with Martumili Artists on the internationally-acclaimed Canning Stock Route Project almost 15 years ago. Martumili Artists was established in 2006 by Martu people living in the communities of Parnpajinya (Newman), Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, Kunawarritji, Irrungadji and Warralong. The artists and their families are the traditional custodians of vast stretches of the Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts, as well as the Karlamilyi (Rudall River) area. Our latest collaboration What Now? at The Goods Shed celebrates the emerging talent of the next generation of Martumili artists from the remote East Pilbara. 14.01.2022 We're wishing Doreen Chapman all the best for tonight's announcement for The Lester Prize! Doreen has already accomplished so much in being selected as a finalist for the second year in a row. Doreen was born at Jigalong Mission in the early 1970s, though she soon moved with her family to newly Aboriginal-owned Strelley Station. In her youth she continued to travel between remote Pilbara communities including Warralong, Punmu and Marble Bar with her mother, senior Martumili a...rtist May Wokka Chapman. Today Doreen primarily lives in Warralong Community, and paints between art centres Spinifex Hill Studio in South Hedland and Martumili Artists in Newman. Doreen first learnt to paint alongside her mother, beginning her artistic career with Martumili Artists in March 2009 when she and the other women of Punmu painted a large collaborative artwork to raise funds for the community. Doreen is now an established artist in her own right, known for her loose, uninhibited painting style, sophisticated colour combinations, and often witty subject matter. As a deaf and non-verbal woman, painting is an important means of communication and expression for Doreen. This is just one of a handful of beautiful works by Doreen, which you can see on display at The Goods Shed as part of our latest exhibition What Now? Jarntu (dog), Doreen Chapman, acrylic on linen, 91 x 121 cm.

14.01.2022 In case you missed it, our Northam Flour Mill project with Amok Island was featured in yesterday's edition of The West Australian alongside some very compelling reasons why you need to make Northam your next road trip destination.

14.01.2022 We are beyond excited to share Northam's newest attraction The Last Swans, painted by Amok Island. Amok Island has transformed the façade of the old Northam Flour Mill, reinvigorating the iconic gateway to the State’s largest inland town as visitors enter via the Avon Bridge. A huge thank you to our partners Shire of Northam, CBH Group and Mauri for making this project possible, Western Power, and of course Amok Island and Sherrie Wilson Projects for this spectacular piece of public art. 12.01.2022 Karlamilyi (Rudall River region) and its surrounds are Warnman Country, located in the very heart of the Martu homelands. The region is situated south west of the Great Sandy Desert and north east of the Little Sandy Desert. The epic Karlamilyi River runs north into Nyayartakujarra (Lake Dora), a large salt lake. The Broadhurst and Fingoon Ranges extend diagonally across the river’s path. The landscape is striking for its abundance of gorges and valleys carved by ice age glaciers, rugged cliffs, red tali (sand dunes), grasslands, sandstone and quartz rocky outcrops, and salt lakes. What Now? The next generation of Martumili Artists is on now at The Goods Shed. Karlamilyi (detail), Cyril Whyoulter, acrylic on canvas, 76 x 152 cm.

11.01.2022 Punkulyi forms part of the Mackay Range, near Parnngurr community. In the Dreamtime there were two men. The old man was named Ngankurr. When he lay down to rest his body formed the waterhole that exists there today. Punkulyi (detail), Cyril Whyoulter, acrylic on linen, 76 x 152 cm. Martumili Artists

09.01.2022 Artist Brenton See is a keen birdwatcher! This immense love for nature is reflected in his latest work at Friends of Lake Claremont, which we had the privilege of overseeing in collaboration with the Town of Claremont. 06.01.2022 Join our amazing team in the Pilbara! We're seeking an Arts Development Officer/Coordinator to support the development of artistic practice and exhibitions at Spinifex Hill Studio. To learn more or apply for this role, check out https://www.seek.com.au/job/51314868.

06.01.2022 It feels somewhat poetic that our final project for 2020, Amok Island's mural at the Northam Flour Mill for the Shire of Northam, CBH Group and MAURI, would depict a drift of swans taking flight. As the story goes, Northam’s Mayor Oscar Bernard brought a group of these majestic birds to the town in the early 1900s, and over time, the town has become the only place in Australia where the swans survive in the wild. There were once many, but now only a handful continue to make ...Continue reading
