25.01.2022 Congrats to this group of cuties who recently graduated from our puppy class at Doubleview Vet Centre. You’re all off to a great start!

25.01.2022 How we set up the home environment for our dogs is so important for their wellbeing. With slippy wooden floors, rugs have become an important part of our home to help Ziggys hip and pain issues when walking or playing inside. And Evie, well she just likes to sleep on them.

25.01.2022 So now the cat... sorry dog is out of the bag, let’s chat Kind Paws Young Dogs Classes. Run by two, count ‘em two The IMDT qualified trainers these classes are designed to be the perfect follow on from puppy school. So you can get a handle on helping your dog out in the big, wide world. https://www.forpaws.com.au/young-dogs-class

24.01.2022 Some pointers to help set your dogs up well for spooky visitors!

22.01.2022 Meet the beautiful Sasha who joined us for a Life Skills Consult. We helped Sasha work on on some essentials like recall, loose lead walking, connection as well as mine/yours.

20.01.2022 As you can see by the change in his body language Ziggy gets a bit worried by something here. We know its nothing serious, but its our job to support him and help him also realise that its nothing serious. We want to give him the opportunity to disengage from what is worrying him as well as turn it into a positive experience for him. Touch is a game we encourage all doggy parents to play from a young age, as it comes in handy for loads of situations; including this one!

20.01.2022 So Penny took it upon herself to help the dogs out when we were vacuuming the other day In all honesty they are not really bothered, regardless it is always a good idea to turn everyday tasks into a positive, even enjoyable experience for your dogs. Take the initiative to make these experiences rewarding from the beginning rather than seeing if issues arise!

20.01.2022 Theres nothing better than building a strong mutual bond with your dog. There are always challenges to this and those challenges will change and evolve over time. Now is a particularly tough time in many ways, but its important to take the small victories and build on them.

19.01.2022 If youve ever had a sensitive dog as part of your family, or worked with sensitive dogs youll already know how important managing their environment can be. Our latest blog post is about some of the challenges that are likely to get thrown your way and how important it is to put in the effort to help your pup navigate those challenges.

19.01.2022 One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced with Ziggy’s pain and medical issues is helping him settle to avoid him exasperating them. The fact that he is able to settle in a highly stimulating environment like this is a massive victory, it took a lot of work but he’s much happier because of it. And just look at his view!!

18.01.2022 Another group of cuties is off to a great start with their training! Say congrats to the latest graduates from our puppy school with Doubleview Vet Centre

17.01.2022 With everyone spending a lot of time at home at the moment we need to find appropriate ways to entertain both kids and dogs! Ziggy has a few rehab exercises that we do each day, this is one of the more complex ones, but Penny loves to get involved! I think they both did awesome or as Penny would say We killed it

17.01.2022 If you didnt catch it last night (I didnt, American time differences are brutal ) heres myself and Emma from Just About Pawfect talking about the reality of family life with young kids and dogs, with Jennifer Shryock the founder of Family Paws

17.01.2022 One of the cues that we like to make sure Evie is always responsive to is out of here. Being a fearful dog we need to be able to get her out of somewhere quickly when she is uncomfortable. To ensure she will respond when we need, we make an effort to practice in general day to day scenarios - here she has been hanging in the park with a respectful dog but notices another walking past at distance. Practicing out of here in easy situations like this pretty much guarantees a response while also helping to establish a good connection between the words and the outcome (treaties) for Evie.

16.01.2022 So this is a pretty common scene in our house! Our dogs, especially Ziggy, love to be involved in the kids bedtime. This has never been asked for or even set up, but more often than not well have at least one dog hanging out in the room with us. We are more than happy to have them join in and of course the kids love it. It just goes to show that allowing the dog/ kid relationship to develop at its own pace will pay off in the end

16.01.2022 This handsome boy is Freddie! We helped him out with feeling better about dogs behind gates/fences and getting worked up/pulling when he was out for a walk. Taking time before he went on a walk to lower his arousal level, encouraging him to explore his environment, reinforcing good choices he made and keeping an eye on his body language will set this guy up for success!!

15.01.2022 Rainy days bring lots of sniff opportunities, sniff opportunities let doggies use their brains and senses more, using their brains more leads to rest. If your dog is quite active and struggles to relax, remember enrichment isnt the same as exercise; embrace the sniff!

15.01.2022 These are the current exercises we do with Ziggy every morning. We are tying to maintain the muscles in his hind and stretch out his neck to minimise his pain as much as possible. The added bonus is that he loves it It really only takes about 10mins to do, without distractions occurring, and improves his quality of life so much!

15.01.2022 The idea of control is kind of a downer, no one likes to be controlled, our dogs included. But help is something we all need at times, especially our dogs. So, if your dog is struggling with something, remember to help them. Help them understand, help them adjust, help them find a better option; itll lead to a happier dog and a happier relationship.

14.01.2022 Check out how we manage a 4 year old, a 6 month old and two dogs (one who is a bit of a nutter ) around our house. Our aim is to provide everyone with their own space, set everybody up for success and improve upon their already pretty solid bonds! Family Paws Parent Education

14.01.2022 Love this blog from Bharcs! Consent when interacting with dogs is something that is not widely understood in the public. But, it is so important and is something that, as a Family Paws parent educator, I am passionate about bringing awareness to.

14.01.2022 Congrats to the latest group of puppy school graduates!! They are all amazing pups who are ready for lifes adventures

13.01.2022 Evie decided to join in on Ziggys rehab exercises this morning! We love it when Evie engages actively like this, its a good indication that shes in a happy place.

13.01.2022 No-doubt you would have seen us mention the trials and tribulations we have experienced with young Ziggy. Well, we thought it was definitely time for a proper update, especially with his recent progress! We have known Ziggy has hip dysplasia since we noticed pain responses as a young pup. We had him on some medication, did some proprioception exercises and had been seeing a physio to help him out. Then at the beginning of 2019 he started having episodes which involved waki...ng up startled, grumbling and growling, air snapping, high pitched barks and generally looking out of it. We took him to so many different appointments with a range of vets to try and figure out what was going on. All the tests were run and numerous types of medication given, with a possible neurological diagnosis and potential sleep disorder, but unfortunately nothing seemed to help that much. We managed the situation by making sure he was crate trained for night time so he had a safe space, spending nights sleeping near him so we could comfort him during an episode, giving him space when he wanted it and doing our best to undo all the negative experiences he had unfortunately experienced as a result of the episodes. Late last year we increasingly came to think the episodes were more and more pain related than anything else. In consultation with our vets we started weaning him off some of the meds and looking into new rehab options for him. In early March we took him to see the amazing people at Veterinary Rehab Services - Roleystone Animal Hospital. This was a big deal for Ziggy since he needed to stay there for the day as they take the assessments at the dogs pace to help make it a positive experience for them. Previously, he had built up some bad associations with clinic environments due to his level of pain. Well, not only did he actually let them do a full assessment but he seemed to make new friends there too Fast forward 7 weeks and he has finished his program, reaching all the goals set at his initial assessment. It wasnt an easy 7 weeks, numerous visits for laser therapy, minimal activity and lots of work at home, but this guy nailed it!! To say we are proud of him is an understatement. And, we are in absolute awe of the amazing work that Animal Rehab Services did. Of course we cant forget the effort that myself, my husband and even our young daughter put in to help improve Ziggys quality of life. Hell always have hip dysplasia and his neck bothers him from time to time but just look at these photos; they show just how happy this guy was meant to be

13.01.2022 Sunday, fun day! Heres hoping youre out making positive memories and experiences with your dog today.

13.01.2022 This photo is cute but there is more to it than you probably realise! It shows me how much our relationship has changed. When Ziggy was a puppy we did a heap of stuff together - walks, classes, adventures, games, snuggles.... Then things changed, his health challenges stopped us from continuing to do a lot of those things and then I got pregnant with my second child and I was sick/exhausted for pretty much the entire time. Due to these challenges I noticed our relationship re...grettably becoming quite distant Recently, not only has his pain been significantly reduced, Ive been able to devote more and more time to doing things with Ziggy. It has made such a difference to the way he acts with me in general and Im loving it!! Meaningful relationships take work and time. And I can guarantee Ill always be there for Ziggy, whenever he wants See more

12.01.2022 Building lasting relationships between kids and dogs means developing an eagle eye! The slightest change in the environment can mean the difference between a relaxed dog and a wary dog. Being aware and stepping in when necessary will mean that your dog knows youve got this under control and they will definitely be grateful for that

11.01.2022 To any For Paws followers that live in Karrinyup and the surrounding suburbs please come and join Happy Dogs - Karrinyup! Weve created this group to help build a positive community for the people in the area and their dogs. Its a safe place to talk about training wins, training challenges, community, events, tips, recommendations and anything dog related

11.01.2022 Walked in to find these two having a cuddle. It’s moments like these that make me proud of the relationship we’ve helped them build together, through time patience and space. Always acknowledge the hard work and small victories you have with your training goals, positive training applies to the trainer too!

10.01.2022 Ziggy has had a tough week of vet visits and establishing new pain management protocols. So, were giving him lots of easy wins and only focusing on the simple stuff when were out and about. Dogs have rough weeks too, its important to adjust our training to suit!

10.01.2022 The Kind Paws Young Dogs Classes kicked off this weekend and we had a great time meeting all the pups and their people. Joining forces with the amazing Bree from B Kind Dog Training makes this class extra special; so, if you’re interested in taking the next step after puppy school with two qualified and experienced trainers, check out the link below! https://tinyurl.com/yhtnduxv

10.01.2022 So in case you ever wondered how important environmental enrichment is for your dog, this photo sums it up! Ziggy is a working dog, and most people would think that means a load of running would be what he needs to tire him out. What he actually needs is the right type of physical activity, like a relaxing walk and herding games, coupled with some calmer activites (scenting based is clearly a favourite) to help lower his arousal level. This combo sure makes for one content pup

10.01.2022 If youre navigating the world of kIds and dogs, Family Paws Parent Education is a great place for resources and tips. And right now, you can even check out some of the set ups from the For Paws household!

09.01.2022 There are a lot of challenges to being at home more, dealing with the interactions between our dogs and their family is definitely one of them. Direct interactions are important to manage and supervise but this post is a reminder that indirect interactions (such as dogs finding kids toys/games) is important to keep in mind at this time too.

09.01.2022 Here’s Ziggy trying to initiate play. What do you see from Evie that suggests she’s not ready to play? Were her signs appropriate? If they hadn’t been interrupted to stop the cushion being chewed do you think Ziggy would have got his game? There’s lots to observe here!

08.01.2022 What do you think Ziggy is thinking? We think it might be something to do with the Willy wagtail that is taunting him from the garden! And thats why we trained a cue to help manage Ziggy when the wagtail is around. A simple Ziggy inside, will have him inside and looking a little like this, an alternate behaviour that is incompatible with his herding instinct.

07.01.2022 Where does your dog seek comfort? Ziggy has a range of ways, but sleeping on our bed by himself is one that hes been doing more often recently. Dogs will often vary how they seek comfort depending on a range of factors, so keep an eye out for any changes and if they find somewhere appropriate that makes them happy, encourage them!

07.01.2022 Check out our first graduating class since Ive returned from maternity leave Congratulations to all these beautiful puppers! Well done Youppie, Etta, Obie, Rex, Jessie, Nero Doubleview Vet Centre

06.01.2022 Consider this scenario; tomorrow you take a walk by yourself, observing all the appropriate rules in the current climate. A stranger approaches you and gets too close, then the stranger hugs you as a kind gesture. How do you feel? Now another scenario; you see an on-lead dog, the walker is keeping a distance from everyone, happily going about their day. An off lead dog rushes over and gets too close, then jumps up at it trying to play. How does the on-lead dog feel? Just because a gesture was made with good intent, doesnt mean it is appropriate. Social distancing can be tough for us to get our heads around but were hoping some of the etiquette we learn in this difficult time will help people empathise with all the dogs and carers out there who do need a bit of space.

06.01.2022 Love this from B Kind Dog Training one of the fundamentals we dog trainers like to instil with clients and their doggos. Such a simple element that can bring a lot of change!

06.01.2022 So far isolation has had a mixed effect on being out and about. On one hand more people are home with not a lot to do, so were seeing a lot of dogs out that we havent seen before. On the other hand people seem to be spreading their walks out across the day more, so there are less dogs overall, for the most part. It certainly keeps you guessing from a training and management point of view, since the predictability of routine has gone out the window. But one thing that is still predictable is Ziggys love of a grass tree! Stay safe!

05.01.2022 Enrichment is something the whole family can get involved with and it is useful in building positive relationships. Packing treat balls can be a great job for kids to do that is low energy for the dogs, inclusive for the kids and easily supervised/overseen by parents.

04.01.2022 Heres a little something that myself and another Perth trainer, the awesome Emma Wale from Just About Pawfect, did recently with Jennifer Shryock from Family Paws!! Having young kids and doggos can definitely make for interesting times but trust me when I say that taking things slowly in those early stages can help to build some amazing bonds that make the whole family dynamic just that little bit more perfect

04.01.2022 Evie felt like playing today! As she has aged and been shaped by her environment, the way she interacts with her world has changed; I ts not often she actively engages with play like this nowadays. Its a reminder that a dogs behaviours and likes/dislikes are constantly changing and evolving and, our training should be too!

04.01.2022 Staying positive in uncertain times can be hard. But if Evie has taught her family anything, it is to shake it off and do your best with what youve got. Heres hoping you are all doing ok and are finding your version of rolling on the grass.

03.01.2022 Enrichment comes in many forms, including this one! A lot of the time people focus on enrichment in the home environment, but its important to enrich our dogs lives out and about too.

03.01.2022 We got to work with the lovely Rosie and Roger who signed up for our Behavioural Assistance Package. Over the three sessions we worked on some lead reactivity issues with Rosie and helped Roger improve his connection with his human when out and about as well as over arousal around other dogs. Great work guys!

02.01.2022 With the regional restrictions over, a lot of people have taken the opportunity to travel over the long weekend and chill out. But remember, that applies to your dogs too! Change will take a toll on them, give them the chance to blow off steam and also to rest! And when you get back home, make sure keep up the enrichment as well as the chill time to help ease them back into their routine.

02.01.2022 Ziggy can be uncomfortable with handling his paws. This is where fear-free training becomes so important. Giving him an alternate option for everyday scenarios that would normally require handling around the paws has been imperative. Being conscious of your dogs handling limits is an important part of building and maintaining your relationship.
