21.01.2022 Tis the season! **PLEASE SHARE!** AUSTRALIAN MAGPIES: DOs & DONTs: DO seek advice from a wildlife hospital.... DO respect magpies and keep magpie families together. DO follow the advice of licenced wildlife rehabilitators. DONT feed, take home, make a pet of, cut the wings of, cage, or displace magpies. DONT try to release magpies into an area they were not originally from. DONT illegally take wildlife from the wild. If you find a magpie and you think they might need some help, this advice may help... When to take a magpie straight to a wildlife hospital: -if there are any injuries. -if an adult cant fly. -if a nestling (tail less than 3cm long) is on the ground. -if a bird has a tumour, disease or parasites. -if the magpie has been attacked by anything, brought in by a cat, harassed by a cat or disturbed by a dog. When to wait and watch: -if a fledgling is on the ground, wait and watch to see if the parents return; contact a wildlife hospital for advice if parents dont return for 2+hrs. -if you are concerned a chicks parents might have died, wait and watch to see if family members/parents return. -if you have returned a young rehabilitated magpie to their territory, wait and watch to see if the parents feed them. -if a fledgling is on the ground in the evening, wait and watch to see if the fledgling can climb up a tree to safety. When to interfere and place a young bird in a tree: -if the young bird is fledgling age and not injured or unwell. -if there are parents around but the young bird cannot get itself up into a tree. -if the young bird is at risk of predation or attack if left on the ground. -if it is getting dark and the young bird is still on the ground. For ALL NESTLING BIRDS, please take them to a wildlife hospital for assessment to check for injuries. If they are healthy, the wildlife hospital will help you by providing advice on the best course of action. It is now illegal for people to keep magpies without a licence. It is now illegal for magpies to be kept or cared for by someone who is not licenced to rehabilitate this species. But we do need your help to rescue, transport and return magpies to their families where appropriate! Please do the right thing for the magpies and seek professional advice. We really hope to PREVENT humanisation, illegal keeping/trade and inapropriate magpie keeping this season. Prevention is the key. Magpies seem to be a species at high risk of illegal taking from the wild and keeping as pets. We can all help them but educating our friends and families and seeking professional advice. As always, we love magpies and are here to help if you have any questions or concerns about these beautiful birds. Have a wonderful day everyone!

19.01.2022 SPRING SAFETY Just a reminder to keep your fertilisers and mulch bags out of reach of pets! * Although more natural, organic does often not mean safer for pets. The smell can be very tempting and pets (often dogs) decide to sample them. This can result in some gastrointestinal signs or even tremors. If you suspect your pet has eaten any mulch or fertiliser contact a vet as soon as possible!
18.01.2022 How many of these does your dog or cat do?!!

16.01.2022 Did you know cats can get acne? From time to time or over your cats life you may have noticed small black dots on their chin*! This could be cat acne which is basically a build up of dead skin cells, oil and bacteria! Cat acne can be common and there are few things we can do to help reduce the formation. 1. Bowl type; using non porous materials such as ceramics or glass aids in the reduction of tiny bits of food and bacteria. These particles can be lodged in and on the sur...face of a bowl and then be transferred to your cats chin. 2. Cleaning; wash your cats food and water bowls daily with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. 3. Skin care; if your cat will allow you gently wipe their chin with a towel covered in warm water. *A vet check is always recommended as there can be many diseases of the skin and alternative treatments that may need prescription medications. Red, irritating, discharging or unpleasant odours could mean infection. See more

14.01.2022 CATS AND CATNIP Catnip is a herb and member of the mint family, it contains an exquisite oil that even tigers and lions enjoy!! 70-80% of cats may display behaviour similar to that of a female cat in season or heat by rubbing their heads or body on the herb, salivating and even vocalising. Nepetalactone, one of catnips volatile oils, enters the cats nasal tissue and travels to the brain where the cat essentially reacts to what the brain believes is a cat pheromone. I...nterestingly, cats under 6 months are generally uninterested until they are more sexually mature! The good news is catnip is non-addictive and safe See more

13.01.2022 Summer Preventative Health Tip - BRUSHING With the warmer weather pets are beginning to shed their winter fur. Brushing has many benefits including removing trapped dead hair, reducing ingestion of fur which can result in hairballs or blockages, better heat tolerance and spreads healthy skin oils over the coat. If your pet is not a fan of the brush; *Try using treats when ever the brush is out to make it a positive association. *Start slow and for small periods of time.... Gradually increase as your pet becomes more comfortable. * For double coated or longer haired dogs try the Line Brushing technique. * Use the right tool for the job; some coat types or body parts require different brushes or combs. 12.01.2022 At Forrestdale Veterinary Hospital we are taking the COVID-19 risks seriously. Whilst your pets are not a known risk factor, public spaces are. At this point in time we are business as usual but we are implementing changes to protect our team and our clients. In the Hospital 1. We have increased our disinfection measures within the hospital. 2. Our staff members are following the Australian Government Department of Health coronavirus (COVID-19) advice for protecting themse...lves and others. 3. We are keeping the waiting room as clear as possible and those who would like to wait outside or in their car are welcome to do so. 4. We have implemented changes in our work flow. To minimise contact between people after arrival you will be placed into a consult room with your pet. The vet will briefly discuss with you your pets history and needs and we will then take your pet to our treatment room where our trained nurses will help us look after your pet. These changes are to ensure we can still look after your pets whilst reducing the risk of transmission between humans. 5. If you require foods or medications please email or phone ahead and we can have these ready for you. What if you are unwell? 1. Avoid coming to the vets if you are unwell 2. If you have a pet emergency during this time but are unwell, please call us on 63967485 to discuss the best way for us to ensure your pet receives the care required. 3. If your pet requires medication please phone or email and we will help you out - you can get a well friend to collect it and payment can be made via phone or direct debit. We all need to work together to ensure there is minimal risk of spreading this viral disease. We remain committed to looking after you and your beloved pets safely during this time. Advice regarding COVID-19 is changing daily so always check the Australian Government Department of Health website. Watch the World Health Organisation video 7 simple steps to protect yourself and others from COVID-19

10.01.2022 Cat litter, does it really matter? Speaking for all the cats out there yes, yes it does!! We all know cats can be fussy and cat litter and "bathroom etiquette" is no exception. With winter rains hitting us cats are less likely to want to go potty outside! They may get their paws wet!!! If you are finding your feline friend isnt using their tray as you would like (urinating in unusual places). Here is a few tips:... -Try a different kind of litter i.e paper, clay, crystal. -Clean the litter tray whenever it is soiled. -Have two litter trays per cat and in multi-cat households have them in different areas preferably low traffic. -For accidents use a enzymatic cleaner. When cats do not use the "bathroom" as often as they should they can develop some serious health problems! See more

09.01.2022 Train your cat to love their carrier!! Oska loves his carrier!!! Our top tips; *From as young as possible have the carrier out around the house so the cat can sniff and explore it at their own pace. *Feed your cat in the carrier to build up positive experiences.... *Place some of the cat's bedding with their smell on and put it in the carrier. *Practice closing the openings half way and eventually fully. Once the cat is comfortable slowly increase the increments they are in the carrier with the doors shut, start as little as 10 seconds. See more
