25.01.2022 HOSPITAL CASE: Lexi's Fungal Frustrations! Lexi the Border Collie X is shown here with a catheter that has been surgically inserted by a specialist veterinarian at PVS. This catheter has been placed through her skull and into her frontal sinus where the infection was present. This allows the medication to flow directly into the area where it was needed. The first infusions were carried out at PVS, then at High Wycombe Vet and Forrestfield Vet Hospital with specific medical i...nstructions from the specialist veterinarian. Lexi had eye drops (to prevent irritation) prior to each dose of medication. Her medication was syringed via her catheter twice daily for 2 weeks. Lexi and her parents handled this ordeal incredibly! Mum and Dad did not miss a beat dropping her off for her infusions each morning and evening as required. Lexi was a complete superdog when it came to her treatment! She was calm, patient and was very well behaved even though she was uncomfortable (and had a sneezing fit most days after her treatment). She always came in with a smile on her face and a wag in her tail! She is all clear now and is enjoying life **See comments to view Lexi being a great patient!

25.01.2022 Another little collection of fluffers and floofs who took part of Sterilisation Month!

24.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS- Puppies: There are many things to know and prepare when a new member joins the family. With puppies, new owners must make sure that their health checks, vaccinations, socialisation and training are all part of their doggie schedule. One major life component that is often overlooked is interaction with children. Families with young children (or who have young children who visit) should teach both kids and puppy to treat each other with respect. This redu...ces any instances of confrontation or altercation and helps pup grow up to be a well behaved dog. The following info pics are great to show children and help them learn how to play with the new pupper. If you have any puppy questions please contact us and speak to one of our friendly nurses.

23.01.2022 Naughty Koko got to the chocolate stash and we had to induce vomiting to expel the toxins. Activated charcoal is often given after emesis to assist in absorbing remaining toxins in the stomach. What do you do when you need your patient to eat charcoal after ingesting chocolate? Put some chicken in it, of course!

Other times, there may be swelling, redness, vomiting and diarrhea. Rarely (it CAN happen), dogs can go into anaphylactic shock, become pale in the gums, have weakness or collapse. If you notice your dog or cat has been stung by a bee, KEEP A CLOSE WATCH on them for any abnormalities. PLEASE call us if you are unsure what to do and in the event of an emergency, come straight to the hospital. If you have any questions, call us on 9453 1290 and speak to one of our nurses :) In the mean time, have a look at some of these pets who had a small tiff with one of those buzzy fun bugs! https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3795456013828034&id=159756350731370

15.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS: Dog fights happen more and more now a days. Dont ask us why, but we have noticed a rise in the last few years. Heres some Dog Etiquette that every owner should know:... Some dogs may be friendly and very sociable, others, although maybe just as friendly (or not at all, but still enjoy an isolated on leash walk), may also have many factors that will contribute to an unwanted encounter. This can be stressful for owners AND dogs. PLEASE always ask if your dog can say "Hello" to another dog BEFORE approaching and if you are on a LEAD ONLY area, unless you have good recall, DO NOT let your dog run up to another dog. Have a squiz at this info pic for more information.

12.01.2022 Is your dog or cat sterilised? If not, why not let them join these puppers and kitty in taking part of De-sexing Month! Mum and Dad will also save some money :) Give us a call today!

12.01.2022 INFORMATION FRIDAYS: SEPARATION ANXIETY AND COVID19! As we are beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel with COVID19 (we are not out of the woods yet!), we are (or are discussing) returning to work away from home. This can prove quite difficult for our furry friends as many have become accustom to their humans spending most of their time in their company. As some pets are already predisposed to separation anxiety, there will be increased cases and issues in the upco...ming months as this is a situation most of us have not experienced previously. What is Separation Anxiety? Separation Anxiety is distress of a pet as a result of being isolated from those they share a bond with. This can be evident in many ways such as vocalisation, pacing, panting, excess drooling, destruction, inappropriate toileting, vomiting and diarrhoea to name a few. This may be even more of an issue with a newly adopted pet! So what can pet owners do to help? If you have not started doing so already, you must start the desensitisation process NOW. Here are some ways to help with separation anxiety: - As we have mentioned before, start this process NOW! The longer you have to aid in this situation, the better it will be for you little friends. - Build this tolerance slowly. Start with leaving the room or putting them outside by themselves for short periods of time (5-10mins) and increase the time gradually. - Give them plenty of enrichment when they are on their own. Puzzle toys, Kongs filled with peanut butter, scattered kibbles in the garden or area of stay to keep them active are great ways to provide healthy stimulation. NOTE: Always test toys prior to leaving them with your pet to prevent complications with ingestion. - Make entrances and exits NON EVENTFUL! The more you hype of coming home or leaving, the more that anxiety will fabricate. - If actions such as picking up your keys/ putting on your shoes/ picking up your bag trigger anxiety, do these things more often when you are NOT leaving the house to reduce association. - When you DO start work, take them for a nice walk before work to keep them happy and (hopefully) tired. For some pets, additional behaviour training or medication may be needed to cope with separation anxiety. If you require any assistance with your pet with this issue, please call us at Forrestfield Vet on 9453 1290. Please SHARE this with your fellow pet owners to help reduce the separation anxiety in pets!

09.01.2022 HOSPITAL CASE: Peppers Pesky Pinna Problems! This beautiful little pupper is Pepper and she has had chronic ear issues ever since she had been in the rescue facility. She has been in and out of other vets for years due to her recurrent ear infections, which were often very painful, as well as very itchy and inflamed, Peppers mum just wanted her to be comfortable.... Pepper had had many ear cleans, had been on various medications and often needed to have a cone on her head constantly to stop her from self traumatising her ears. A Lateral Resection surgery (a surgical procedure that involves removing the outside cartilage wall of the ear to shorten the ear canal which makes it easier to clean and control infection) was performed on BOTH ears in 2011 at another vet to help alleviate her frequent, yeasty, infected ears. Although this helped the situation, it didnt eliminate the problem completely. So over the years, Pepper continued to have her ears treated medically without real success. When Pepper came to see us, the issues with her pinnas (the flappy part of the ears) were so severe and horrifically damaged that she needed to be anaesthetised to even appropriately examine and clean her ears once more. Peppers mum asked if the removal of the pinnas would be an option. With the problem essentially involving the pinnas itself, the vets concluded that this was definitely an option. (She would still be able to hear as her ear canals would be retained). Peppers mum understood that cosmetically, it may be a little confronting for Pepper to have no ears, but as long as it improved her little girls quality of life, the decision was easily made. So after much discussion, Pepper underwent surgery with Dr Neville to remove her ear flaps and take the chronic damaged ear flap tissue away. Were happy to report that her surgery went extremely well and her recovery was smooth (just like her new head look!!) Both our vets and her mum are very pleased with Peppers surgical result and it has greatly improved the quality of her life. She now looks like a little seal pup and has a new lease on life without constant painful, itchy ears!

Nurse Maybelline snuck up on him having a howl (and caught him rearranging his cage a little).
