23.01.2022 Mind Medicine Australia is seeking to establish safe and effective psychedelic-assisted treatments for mental illness in Australia Tania de Jong and Peter Hunt... have launched Mind Medicine Australia in February to develop regulatory-approved and research-backed psychedelic assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of mental illness. These mind-revealing drugs emerged into the mainstream in the 1940s, were used by hippies in the 1960s and banned in 1970. This brought most research to a halt, except in Switzerland. But by 2010, researchers returned and about 100 trials have since been completed or are now underway, mainly in people with major depression or post-traumatic stress. With no major advances in the pipeline to treat these conditions, these drugs, if they work, have the potential to disrupt current practice and change the treatment paradigm. Interest is now high and universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Kings College London, UCLA, Harvard, New York University, Yale and the universities of Zurich and Basel have active psychedelic research programs. In April, Londons prestigious Imperial College opened the Imperial Centre for Psychedelic Research. Then in September, leading United States medical complex Johns Hopkins followed suit and opened The Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. According to research from the National University of Singapore, seniors who eat more than two standard portions of mushrooms, equivalent to 300g per week, may have 50% reduced odds of having cognitive impairment. They say this is due to the ergothioneine found in almost all mushroom varieties.
