25.01.2022 Improving smallholder coffee productivity in Uganda one step at a time The Government of Uganda hopes to more than triple its annual coffee exports from the current 4 million 60 kg bags to 20 million 60 kg bags by 2020. With the current climate variability and trends in future climatic change, the goal will not be met without more intrinsic changes, such as increased adoption of climate-smart agricultural (CSA) practices by farmers. 24.01.2022 James Cropper gets first load of coffee cups for recycling programme Paper products manufacturer James Cropper has received the first load of coffee cups from a materials recycling facility in London, UK, as part of its recycling programme that transforms the cups into paper-based products. The company recently developed its CupCycling technology, which allows the recycling of disposable paper cups in the UK in a bid to reduce their environmental impact. Using the technology,... the company separates polyethylene lining and paper materials contained in the coffee cups and then uses the paper fibre to create deluxe paper by upcycling it. The company has partnered with Paper Round, which collects cups from 5,000 businesses in London at its sorting facility based in Purfleet, Essex. James Cropper market development manager Richard Burnett said: It’s vital the coffee cups are collected in a separate stream so that the virgin paper used to make them can be recycled back into valuable products like our custom-made papers and Colourform plastic-free packaging. The products resulting from the recycling include Selfridges bags and the Extract paper range. Paper Round director Alison Roe said: Paper Round is all about real recycling, so working with James Cropper to ensure that our customers’ cups are made into high-quality paper was very important to us. We look forward to recycling many more cups from our customers as we roll the scheme out. James Cropper recently urged businesses ‘to do the right thing’ by adopting a coffee cup recycling scheme. The company has also called for improvements in the infrastructure sector that could help tackle the threat posed by single-use cups. It is estimated that around three billion coffee cups are being used in the UK annually. The UK Environment Audit Committee set out its target of recycling all single-use coffee cups by 2023. Caskai makes its beverages from cascara the dried husk of the coffee fruit, an upcycled form...er waste product of coffee production. Caskai is one of the early movers in this burgeoning new beverage category. Jim Brinton, the CEO and Founder of Avanti Markets Northwest personally selected Caskai for his micro markets noting, Caskai is a unique product we believe our clients will enjoy and fills a segment void that will allow us to better serve our customers. Its proposition fits into the trend we are seeing with beverages plant-based ingredients, low sugar, healthy, and is made from an upcycled product that was formerly considered waste in the coffee industry. Caskai caters to the rising demand by consumers all-natural beverage alternatives. With only 44 calories per bottle, up to ll mg of naturally occurring caffeine, and a little cascara magic, Caskai is the perfect workplace refreshment that helps you get working without getting worked up. We are thrilled to be working with Jim Brinton and Avanti Markets NW to introduce our cascara-based products to the Pacific Northwest workplace, an often overlooked point of consumption and where most of us spend the greater part of our day, says founder Joel Jelderks, the founder of Caskai and is originally from the Pacific Northwest. The beverage’s ingredients are simple and naturally-derived: Premium Sun-Dried Cascara from arabica coffee sourced from Panama and Nicaragua that is freshly brewed in spring water from the Austrian Alps, a touch of organic cane sugar, a shot of carbonation and citric acid. Caskai’s Sparkling Cascara Infusion is packaged in a 275mL premium glass bottle that is best enjoyed cold. As a raw ingredient, Cascara contains a full combination of beneficial nutrients that includes powerful antioxidants, essential amino acids, B Vitamins, Vitamin E, Potassium, essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6), Carbohydrates, Fiber, Calcium, Potassium and a natural caffeine boost. Cascara has been used in small communities in Africa and the Middle East for more than 1,000 years, but its benefits have not been widely known. See more

19.01.2022 Mondi’s renewable packaging material helps Paulig lower carbon footprint Climate change is harming our planet’s fragile ecosystems, driving the movement for drastic cuts to carbon emissions at a global scale. 19.01.2022 Swiss coffee firm Lattesso unveils Crypto Valley’s first loyalty coin Swiss-based cold coffee manufacturer Lattesso has introduced the Crypto Valley’s first loyalty token, the lattessocoin, presenting the first proof of concept of the industry, said a press release CoinReport received from qiibee’s PR company, Wachsman. The unveiling took place at the Blockchain Summit in Zug. Lattessocoin is built on the qiibee system, a dedicated platform for loyalty programs on the Ethereu...m blockchain. From the end of the month (May), each cup of Lattesso will come with a code that makes customers eligible for free lattessocoins, which are kept on the blockchain and can be obtained via a user-friendly web application with no restrictions, conditions or expiration dates. Lattesso CEO Erich Kienle described the partnership as a pioneering achievement, saying in the press release we received, We are very pleased to present this world-first in Zug’s Crypto Valley, the worldwide blockchain hotspot. Lattesso said by adopting blockchain technology to power its customer loyalty program, it wishes to make the token benefits accessible to the public. As opposed to conventional loyalty programs, the lattessocoin joins a split market, increases its productivities and removes the central data authority by being on the blockchain. Qiibee co-founder and CEO Gabriele Giancola commented, Customers worldwide are familiar with air mile programs and loyalty points, and although these are important practices for retailers and brands, customers are limited and restricted in how they can utilize their points and rewards. Now Lattesso customers will be able to exchange their loyalty points for cryptocurrencies from their smartphones. Since coins from all qiibee partners are exchangeable, Lattesso customers will be able to exchange their loyalty points not only for coffee, but also take advantage of several other offers in the future. Customers will also be able to exchange their coins for fiat. Digital currencies and coins, including lattessocoins, are also freely tradeable, with demand setting the price.

16.01.2022 Scott Amron’s Stircle stirs your coffee without a stick and reduces waste Scott Amron didn’t like the thought of all that plastic and/or wood being thrown away, so he created the Stircle. The device can be placed on any surface, or (as seen here) sunk into a hole cut into a countertop. Users just place their unstirred beverage on it, and the Stircle automatically spins it in one direction and then the other, thoroughly mixing its contents. ASCASO TRIESTESPRESSO QUADRATO... Amron who previously brought us dissolving fruit-washing labels claims that not only is his invention less wasteful than using stir sticks, but in the long run is also more economical for coffee shops to use. The Stircle is designed to sit in a hole cut out of any countertop with a simple hole saw and is available in a basic and advanced version which has faster stir times. It should stir 50,000 cups using only about $0.10 of electricity at $0.12 per kWh. The Stircle is priced at $345 or $490 depending on the model. The Stircle can be seen in coffee-stirring action, in the following video For more info visit stircle.com. See more

15.01.2022 -Eleven tests first ever self-chilling can for cold brew coffee beverage IRVING, Texas, U.S. 7-Eleven, Inc. is rolling two ground-breaking launches into one with the introduction of its proprietary Fizzics Sparkling Cold Brew Coffee in the first self-chilling cans available to the public in the U.S. During the test launch, the groundbreaking Fizzics Sparkling Cold Brew Coffee drinks are available exclusively at select participating 7-Eleven stores. Created by The Joseph Com...pany International Inc., the innovative Chill-Can technology filled with the Fizzics coffee drink is being tested at 15 Los Angeles-area 7-Eleven stores. On the leading edge of coffee trends, the Fizzics Sparkling Cold Brew Coffee drinks are available in three flavors Regular, French Vanilla and Caramel. Made with 100 percent Arabica beans and all natural flavors, each 8.4-ounce can of the fizzy brew contains only 50 calories, 10 grams of sugar and less than 80 mg. of caffeine. The Chill-Can containers are purchased at ambient temperature and chilled when ready to consume. When activated, the patented technology utilizes reclaimed CO2 and the process automatically chills the can and the sparkling coffee beverage inside. The self-chilling can has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), NASA and the U.S. Army. Because the self-chilling can technology is so groundbreaking, we wanted to introduce it with a super innovative beverage, said Tim Cogil, 7-Eleven director of private brands. Sparkling coffee sodas met all the criteria. Previously available in some coffee shops, a handful of exclusive canned carbonated brews began showing up last summer. Fizzics will be the first that can be chilled on demand, bringing a new level of convenience to customers who want to enjoy a chilled drink whenever and wherever they are. Chilling the can is simple: Place the can on a flat surface, turn the can upside down and twist the base to activate until a constant hissing noise can be heard. Do not handle or touch the can after activation until the hissing stops. The warmth of being handheld can inhibit the cooling process. Do not turn can right side up until hissing stopsabout 75 90 seconds. Once the hissing stops, return the can to an upright position, open, and enjoy! For more than 60 years, companies have been trying to crack the code on creating a viable, easy-to-use self-chilling can that could be made available to the general public. After more than 25 years in development, the Joseph Company patented the technology behind the world’s first and only chill on-demand can. The patented Chill-Can and the MicroCool technology created by The Joseph Company International utilizes a built-in heat exchange unit in concert with reclaimed CO2 to create its chilling technology. The EPA award winning process uses CO2 that is recaptured from the atmosphere and is reused. The Chill-Can is 100 percent recyclable and does not introduce any new CO2 to the atmosphere. See more

09.01.2022 Ethiopia: Nation to establish coffee processing development institute Ethiopian ADDIS ABABA Ethiopian Food, Beverage and Pharmaceutical Industry Development Institute disclosed that it will soon establish a coffee processing development institute in a bid to boosting processed coffee products and increasing its export and foreign currency. The establishment of the institute would help to assist country’s endeavor to increase finished product through providing trained profes...sionals, the Institute Beverage Processing Industry Development Director Aklilu Kefyalew told The Ethiopian Herald. ASCASO TRIESTESPRESSO QUADRATO As to him, it is significant to narrow the widening gap between processed and non-processed coffee export. Raising the awareness of stakeholders and sphere professionals to boost finished product is critical to this end. According to him, the government has been doing its level best in curbing the sector bottlenecks through offering human resource development training , improving infrastructures and applying strictly legal proceedings. The major constraints in the sector are lack of quality and sufficient input, finance to import high tech machinery and manufacturers’ low capacity, he said. The government has revised proclamations to increase foreign investment and allowed investors to import machinery duty free, he stated. The establishment of coffee processing development institute would support both private owners and associations organized to provide processed coffee product through providing competent professionals, said Minilik Habtu, Managing Director of Typica Specialty Coffee Exporter. All the design and structure of the institute have been already finalized and its construction would begin within three months, he noted Trained professionals that would graduate from the institute would have global experience in producing processed coffee and help the country’s effort to penetrate the international market, he said. This would also help to save the money that has been spent on overseas training for professionals in the sector. Country’s domestic coffee processing companies lack capacity to export a wide range of processed coffee product and the institute would help improving human resource development, he told. It was learnt that the country is now working in collaboration with JICA to export roasted brand Ethiopian coffee. See more
