When you are struggling to think of a needed gift for family or friend then a gift membership to the Fort Queenscliff Heritage Association might be the ideal thing. The included Tour of the Fort with entry into the Museum is a most enjoyable experience. Another worthwhile contribution to anybodys home relaxation is our reprinted book A History of Fort Queenscliff by James Edward Tate. The book is available at $25 in our Museum Shop. 11.01.2022 TRIP ADVISOR COMMENTS Well worth a visit ***** This was a fantastic tour. Really interesting exploring the Fort and learning about how it has been used to protect Port Phillip Bay and Melbourne for over a century. Our guide, Mary was amazing. Extremely knowledgeable, friendly and full of enthusiasm. Her ability to remember historical facts as well as share interesting stories made the tour very special. Highly recommend for families with teens as well as adults (little ones m...ay find it a bit too much to concentrate on). The museum at the end of the tour is small but has some really interesting artifacts so also recommend you spend the extra 10-15mins to go through it. Family visit to the Fort ***** My son, Jefferson, visited the fort with school and did not stop talking about it. So when we came on holiday we knew we would visit. It was not a disappointment. Mary, our guide, was fantastic with lots of knowledge, engaging the children, and lots of facts for the adults too. Everyone could dress up, go underground and hear some funny stories. An hour and a half well spent and will be back.

09.01.2022 The people of the Borough of Queenscliffe are renowned for the services which are provided by its volunteer workforce. This passion to serve extends of course through many avenues including Sport and Recreation, Tourism, Major Public Events and Hospitality to name but a few. The unique Heritage hallmark of the Borough also attracts many volunteers. Those with a special interest in History, whether that interest is in research (including publishing), archiving, exhibitions ...(including movie-making), special events, administration or simply and fundamentally story-telling, the Boroughs fabulous museums offer volunteers a wonderful opportunity to engage with other local, like-minded volunteers and visitors to this marvellous part of Victoria. The emerging opportunities which computers and the internet introduce in providing these services, is another aspect in the world of volunteering. To an older cohort of users, this can be both challenging and exciting! To further explore the possibilities which await those already serving as volunteers and those who are contemplating joining this happy cohort, the Combined Museums fraternity will be holding a Sausage Sizzle at the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum on Thursday, May 23rd, commencing at 6.00 pm. Food will be free of charge and drinks will be available at bar prices; ALL WELCOME!!

07.01.2022 VOTED NO 1 ON THE BELLARINE TO VIST BY TRIP ADVISOR

07.01.2022 Captain/Major Ind Sometimes a new addition to our Museum archive provides impetus for a close re-examination of the accepted history of Fort Queenscliff. On this occasion it was the gift of photograph in early 2017. The image was made in the studio of Melbourne photographers Johnstone OShannessy & Co. and dates to the period 1884-1886. It has a notation on the rear stating it is a portrait of Captain F. W. Ind R.A., who had died at Queenscliff on 23rd June 1887, after the o...Continue reading

07.01.2022 I do hope you are enjoying these stories on our website over the last few weeks in lockdown.. These stories appear in our quarterly newsletter. To become a Friend of the Fort the cost is $30 single and $50 a double we would love to have you join. If interested email [email protected]. AN UN-TIMELY DEATH AT THE FORT. I was impelled to seek out my family history in 2005 when my mother (age 84) advised me that she had no idea about her mothers or fathers deaths, no...r where they were buried. Also, she had never met her grandfather. I found the Birth Certificate of her fathers, which revealed he had been born on 9th September 1890, at Gellibrand Street, Queenscliffe, to Sergeant John Murray of the Victorian Artillery. To my great surprise I found that Company Sergeant Major John Murray, who died age 35 in the Fort Queenscliff Hospital, was buried at Queenscliff Cemetery in the Garrison Cemetery Reserve. I had no idea that there could be such a thing as a Garrison Cemetery Reserve. During a hurried visit to Queenscliff(my first visit) I thought I might find a grassy plot where CSM John Murray had rested since 1899. What a revelation! I found a marble memorial slab, erected by his comrades in 1899, in good condition in 2005. No living member of my family was aware of this incident, so I think I was the first of CSM John Murrays family to see his memorial since he was buried in 1899. I was further amazed to see to an impressive adjacent obelisk which lists the names of 47 artillery soldiers who had died at Queenscliff between 1871 and 1905. They were all young; as indeed an artillery soldier must be to lug cannons and cannon balls around. Another intriguing burial in this historical Military Section of the Queenscliff Cemetery is the 1887 grave of Major Frederick William Ind; the first Commanding Officer of the Permanent Victorian Artillery at Fort Queenscliff. He died in 1887, age 29, from congestion of the lungs, after becoming wet due to inclement weather, whilst overseeing a parade three days earlier. History records show that life was not luxurious, nor very comfortable in the Fort. Deaths were attributed to pneumonia, tumours, meningitis, phthisis, jaundice, tuberculosis, apoplexy, angina, drowned and even self-inflicted gunshot. There was no electricity in the early barracks, so even the light was poor, and the comfort cold. If you are not familiar with the Queenscliff Cemetery then make a holiday visit and seek out the Victorian Artillery Obelisk against the southern fence on the highest point inside the cemetery grounds. I will write some more about it in the next newsletter.

06.01.2022 The story of Sapper Keith Barber and the Little Stinker Keith James Barber was 18 when, in 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Australian Engineers at Fort Queenscliff. Keith had grown up in Wharf Street, Queenscliff, and after attending the local primary school, he studied art at the Gordon Institute in Geelong. At the time he enlisted, his father Alfred was a Sergeant in the Royal Australian Artillery at the Fort, and an older brother, John, had also joined the Engineers. Keit...Continue reading
