A space that reflects their love story, and gives them room to be vulnerable, and to express themselves and their love as freely, emotionally and gleefully as they like. 23.01.2022 2019 The Year In Weddings (And Some Big News) I hope you’ve all had the loveliest of holidays, however you’ve spent them, and that you’re all looking forward to any magic 2020 may bring. Christmas always surprises me with its arrival time seems to speed up from the end of the summer onward. But this year it feels particularly emotional to be approaching December 31st. 18.01.2022 It’s been a while since I posted; however, I’ve spent a lot of time online reading, digesting, learning both as a mum & as a business owner. I didn’t want to take up space in place of voices that truly matter but I struggled with feeling that silence is exactly the opposite of what is needed. I’ve been sharing resources on my stories, all of which I’ve saved to my highlights under ‘BLM’ & will refer back to regularly as I continue my learning & hope that others may find th...em useful, too. . On my personal Instagram feed, I’ve shared what I’ve been reading & watching with my young daughters, facilitating discussions about the importance of being ANTI-racist as opposed to simply non-racist; the ways in which we can acknowledge our privilege & actively participate in our allyship. I want to use this platform, however, to look at how I can contribute to bringing change in the industry & within my business. . I’ve been following the incredibly inspirational Nova Reid for a while & through Nova, I started following @rachel.cargyl & @moemotivate. Most of what I’ve learned has been deeply uncomfortable, but 'you can choose comfort or you can choose courage'. I’ve also had my eyes opened to the emotional labour BIPOC voices are enduring; how they come up against white fragility & fatigue, micro-aggressions & tone policing constantly. This is why it’s so important for white people to do the work and not to show up in BIPOC communities declaring our allyship & expecting to be trusted without putting in the inner work. . I have a LONG way to go, but I wanted to share a little of what I’ve done & what I plan to do in case it might help you with your allyship: . - I’ve donated to @noireweddingedit - a directory dedicated to BIPOC couples. - I’ll continue to diversify my feed, as well as the teams I build for my weddings & shoots. - I’m budgeting to invest in Nova’s diversity course. - I‘ll continue to listen & to lean in, with my heart & soul. . I wouldn’t normally share so much but passive empathy is not enough. I’ve made many mistakes & I’m certain to make more but I’m committed to learning & making this the start of a vital new chapter in my life & business. 09.01.2022 It doesn’t feel right to be talking about anything else. But silence is not an option. . I’m sorry I wasn’t doing more before. Passive empathy was, and is, never enough. I am listening and I am learning. . I am not using any hashtags in an attempt to help amplify BIPOC voices.... . I will not be posting my own content this week. Instead, I plan to share in my stories content and resources from the BIPOC community, because those are the voices we need to hear more of. . Please, if you’re not already, follow, like and engage with people outside of your echo chamber. Listen. Learn. Reflect. Spread the word. Donate. But do not rely on the BIPOC community to do the work for you. We must actively participate in our allyship, now and always. . I understand I will never truly understand, however, I stand.
