25.01.2022 When Should You Neuter Dogs to Avoid Health Risk? Some dog breeds have higher risk of developing certain cancers and joint disorders if neutered or spayed within their first year of life. Until now, studies had only assessed that risk in a few breeds. A new, 10-yeard study by researchers at the university of California, Davis, examined 35 dog breeds and found vulnerability from neutering varies greatly depending on the breed. The study was published in the journal Fro...Continue reading

23.01.2022 D I S G U I S I N G P A I N Our pets, no matter if it is a dog or a cat, can be masters in disguising the pain they feel. This is an instinct they kept from the old days when they had to hide their pain in order to survive. When animals live in packs, this instinct saves them from being chased away from the group or even eaten because they are weak and can slow them down. Real masters when it comes to pain are the cats. Cats can suffer silently and hide their pain ...symptoms very good. But at the same time, our pets are creatures of habit, and we as pet owners must we aware of all habits they have and notice if anything changes. Some painful diseases or disorders are very obvious, like a car accident and obvious fracture or an open wound. But other disorders might be more difficult to notice. Our pets have some subtle ways to show that they are in pain and it is our job to notice these signs. Below are the most common pain symptoms and what they might present : Decreased Activity - if Fluffy is a high energy pet, decreased activity can often mean it hurts somewhere Not Using the Stairs - refusing to go up or down stairs often can be muscular or joint pain Decreased Appetite - this might signal pain jn the mouth/teeth or gastrointestinal problems Difficulty Standing Up After Sleeping - often a sign of Osteoarthritis or Musculoskeletal Disorder Overgroominv or Biting/Licking a Particular Area - This can be a sign of referred pain

23.01.2022 R I N G T A I L P O S S U M Fast Facts on our Curly Tail Cuties ~ Adult ring tail possums reach an average length of 30 35 cm and weigh 550 1100 grams. They have a long tail which makes up one-fourth of its entire body length. ... ~ Ringtail possums are found in southwestern Australia and Tasmania. The possum makes home in a variety of habitats such as temperate regions, dense brush, tropical forests, eucalyptus forests, and drier habitats. ~ The common ringtail possum eats flowers, shrubs, foliage, leaves of wattles, resins, plant gum, cypress pine, and fruits - their favourite being young leaves. ~ Ringtail possums are highly social animals. They build nests in tree hollows or tree branches. ~ The female produces 1 2 young in the months of May to July. The young leaves the mother’s pouch after 3 months. This little cutie was brought into the clinic a few weeks ago after being found at the local school. After a thorough check over and x-rays he went onto our lovely local carer.

21.01.2022 - K e e p I t C l e a n The size of this 'bean' This old fella (pardon the pun) is clearly feeling much better after having a sheath clean following his dental. Our male horse friends need extra care when it comes to hygiene... regular sheath cleans! ... The horse’s penis secretes smegma to clean and lubricate the penis. The smegma is made up of exfoliated skin cells, oils, and moisture. If you retracted the penis you would find that it is contained within what is known as the sheath. As the penis secretes smegma the inside of the sheath will also become lubricated. Around the urethral opening is a cleft/cove shaped area that becomes a ideal location for the smegma to accumulate. As it accumulates this is then referred to as the bean due to the oval shape. Each horse produces different amounts of smegma. Over time as it accumulates the smegma begins to coat the sheath and ventral abdomen. It can at times make the hair around the area become a grooming annoyance. It also begins to take on an unpleasant odour. Most significantly, an over-accumulation of smegma in the urethral diverticulum can put pressure on the urethra, causing pain or obstructing the flow of urine. Some horses will manifest their discomfort by rubbing their tails, trying to scratch their sheath on whatever is convenient, such as shrubs and fences, not dropping their penis to urinate, or straining to urinate. If your man allows, regular cleaning of the sheath is required, every 6 months. A thorough cleaning will also allow you to examine the sheath and penis for any signs of neoplasia such as sarcoids, melanomas, and squamous cell carcinoma, habronemiasis or infections. Your general lube or our solution will work well to lubricate and remove debris with a chux cloth. We sell this at the clinic along with a sheath cleaning handout to make the task a bit easier. We always offer complimentary sheath cleaning with our equine dentals.

21.01.2022 Christmas Dangers Christmas is coming!! Along with unwanted extra weight, Christmas carries some added dangers for your pets that you may not be aware of. ... ~ Food and drinks ~ Chocolate both cats and dogs are sensitive to compounds found in chocolate which can cause hyperexcitability, seizures and tummy upsets. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic. Mince pies and Christmas cake/pudding grapes/raisins/sultanas/currants are all toxic to cats and dogs and can cause kidney failure - Beware of alcohol in these too! Macadamia Nuts bad for dogs though not lethal Garlic/Onion/Chives (allium sp.) can cause damage to red blood cells Avocado can cause heart disease Fatty indulgent treats (fatty offcuts, sausages, crackling, marrow bones, cheese) sudden exposure to high doses of fats may lead to tummy upsets and pancreatitis Alcohol even small amounts can cause liver or brain failure in cats and dogs There is lots of dog Christmas treats available to purchase from various pet shops. Better to be safe and keep those nasties away from our beloved fluff babes.

20.01.2022 - W a l l a b i e s - ~ Bennetts Wallaby ~ The Bennett wallaby, known as the red-necked wallaby on mainland Australia, is one of the state's most commonly seen native animals. Visitors to most of our national parks are highly likely to encounter these animals during their stay. ... Their description is often referred to as a 'kangaroo' in Tasmania. Males can weigh more than 20 kg and stand up to 1.5 m tall. They can be distinguished from the Pademelon and Kangaroo by their black nose and paws, and white stripe on the upper lip. Distribution Bennetts wallabies are found throughout the state, including the Bass Strait Islands. They are abundant in Tasmania - their numbers and distribution having expanded over the past 30 years. This is due to a reduction in hunting pressure and the clearing of forest to result in a mosaic of pastures where wallabies can feed at night, alongside bushland where they can shelter by day. - Diet and Behaviour - The species is largely solitary, although loose groups, known as mobs, often share common feeding areas. They feed at afternoon and dusk, generally grazing on grass and herbs. Wallabies damage crops and pastures in many parts of Tasmania and as a result can come into conflict with landowners. -Breeding - There is a distinct breeding season, with births occurring late summer to early autumn. This is in contrast to mainland populations of the same species, where births occur year round. The gestation period is 30 days. Pouch life is about 280 days and weaning occurs at 12-17 months.

20.01.2022 ~ F l e a s ~ The warmer weather provides the perfect breeding conditions for fleas and ticks. Breeding requires energy and energy requires food and that food is BLOOD. Fleas and ticks bite animals (and sometimes humans) and secrete saliva into the bite site to allow easy extraction of blood. This saliva can cause allergic reactions and sometimes more complicated conditions as discussed below. Prevention of fleas and ticks is the best treatment. ... Cat and dog fleas particularly like to feed from cats and dogs but can bite people if the opportunity arises. Rabbit fleas prefer rabbits but will also attach to the ears of cats. Fleas will lay eggs on their host but spend most of their time in the environment developing from eggs into larvae, then pupae and then into adults. This means that the fleas you see on your pet are only about 10% of the problem! Often times the only indication you will get that your pet has/had fleas is the flea dirt (poo) they leave behind usually large pieces of black dirt or little squiggles which dissolve into red/brown blood if wet. Fleas can take a lot of blood from an animal if there is enough of them. This can lead to anaemia. They are also responsible for spreading intestinal tapeworm to your dog or cat. The most common problem that we see with fleas is the intense itch that they can cause in some cats and dogs. The saliva that they inject into the skin when feeding can cause a dramatic allergic reaction in some pets. One flea bite can cause a dreadful itch-scratch cycle and leave some pets with broken/raw/infected skin. We call this Flea Allergy Dermatitis. The only completely successful treatment for Flea Allergy Dermatitis is to remove all fleas from your pet’s environment. This is best achieved with a combination of pet flea control and environmental flea control. Continual treatment is required. Additional therapy may be required to control secondary infections and to help with itch and pain. There are many options available to both cats and dogs for the treatment and prevention of fleas. Spot-on medications or tablets can provide from 1 to 6 months protection from a single treatment. Environmental control will be gradually achieved through keeping your pet flea-free but will be hastened with frequent vacuuming of the house/furniture, frequent washing of bedding in high temperatures along with flea bombing/pest control spraying. We have a detailed handout available at the clinic giving information about fleas, flea treatments and environmental control. Come and talk to us if you or your pet is having trouble.

13.01.2022 Doggy Bed Buddies Letting your dog sleep in your room..? Maybe the answer to a good nights sleep. If you think that having your dog in the bedroom while you sleep is a distraction, you're barking up the wrong tree! A new study has found that sleeping with a dog whether it's a Chihuahua or a Great Dane - helps people to sleep better. The researchers suggest that sleeping with pets brings comfort and a sense of security to people, helping them to sleep easy.... Researchers from the Centre for Sleep Medicine on the Mayo Clinic's Arizona campus looked at the effect of sleeping with a pet on sleep quality. Dr Lois Krahn, an author of the study, said: 'Most people assume having pets in the bedroom is a disruption. "We found that many people actually find comfort and a sense of security from sleeping with their pets." The study involved 40 healthy adults who had their sleep evaluated with a dog in the bedroom over five months. Both the participants and their dogs wore activity trackers to track their sleeping habits for seven nights. The results revealed that sleeping with dogs helped some people to sleep better, despite the breed of dog. The researchers highlighted one caveat to their findings don't let dogs sleep under the covers with you. Researchers have previously confirmed that canines do in fact dream. Now, they say that in fact, they dream in a similar way to humans - and may even dream about their day as we do. For a typical medium sized dog, their breathing is fairly regular and somewhere around 20 minutes into the sleep cycle, you can see the eyes moving around the closed lids and their breathing will become irregular. It turns out that small dogs dream more frequently and have shorter dreams and larger dogs dream less but have longer dreams. Puppies spend a much greater proportion of their sleep time than adult dogs in REM sleep, no doubt condensing huge quantities of newly acquired data. Adult dogs spend about 10-12 percent of their sleeping time in REM sleep. 'Dogs dream about doggie things', a Pointer will point at a dream bird and a Doberman Pinscher will chase a dream robber

12.01.2022 N e w C a n c e r T r e a t m e n t f o r D o g s The Journal of Veterinary Medicine has published results from a pivotal canine field study of STELFONTA, the lead anticancer pharmaceutical from Australian life sciences company, QBiotics Group limited. The study included 123 client owned dogs that had Mast Cell Tumours. A single injection intratumoural of STELFONTA removed 75% of MCTs at day 28, significantly higher compared to untreated controls. Further, the trial s...howed no recurrence in 93% of STELFONTA treated dogs at day 84. Importantly, the treatment was well tolerated, and animals had a good quality of life during and after the treatment. STELFONTA is a first-class pharmaceutical treatment for all grades of MCT no available in Europe with anticipated launches in the USA and Australia, pending approvals. Oncologists say it is an accurate and well tolerated new option for the local treatment of canine MCT. The treatment is injected straight into the tumour. Dogs undergoing the treatment generally don’t require sedation or anaesthesia which carries potential health risks for older and brachycephalic dogs. Cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs and MCTs are the second most frequent canine cancer diagnosed. STELFONTA represents an exciting additional treatment option for MCT where surgical removal of the tumour mass is currently the standard of care. In cases where surgery may not be applicable due to health reasons or due to a location where the tumour may be difficult to remove, this alternative may be the next best standard of care for managing mast cell tumours. ~ Hopefully new methods of treatment for other canine cancers begin to emerge in the future.

12.01.2022 - B a s i c R e s c u e K i t - ~ Basic Rescue Kit for your car ~ Plastic basket/tub or Cardboard box (preferably with lid) for transporting the injured animal to a vet or Wildlife Shelter. ALWAYS make sure the animal is secure.... Towels, various sizes to catch and wrap Blanket to cover and keep warm. Covering the animal’s head and staying very quiet usually keeps them calm. STRESS can KILL Beanie (Ideal for baby animals) Pillowcase (used as a substitute pouch for orphaned joeys) Carry bag to place pouched joey in then hang over the headrest Torch/head torch Disposable Gloves (for checking pouches & moving dead animals off the road) Pen and paper to write down the exact location so the animal can be released back home Hi-vis vest to wear when checking pouches to stay visible (especially at night) Scissors (can be used to remove baby joeys from the pouch if they are still fused to the teat) What To Do When You Find Injured Wildlife PROTECT YOURSELF. Personal safety is first and foremost. Injured animals don’t know if you are going to help them or harm them. They may kick, scratch or bite. If you are in a vehicle, turn your hazard lights on. Try to warn oncoming vehicles to slow down. APPROACH WITH CAUTION Speak quietly and try not to frighten the animal. Remember that injured wildlife will be very scared and in pain. Keep all pets away. REMOVE FROM ROAD When it is safe to do so, move the animal off the road. If it is dead move it well away from the road to avoid a second kill. Birds such as eagles and hawks like to feast on dead wildlife.

10.01.2022 F L Y S T R I K E Does the idea of maggots feeding on living flesh give you the heebie-jeebies? Us too! Fly strike is the term given to having fly eggs laid on living animals which then develop into maggots which live on the animal until they mature.... It is usually our poor Aussie Merino sheep that is known for developing flystrike, but in reality, any animal can be affected. Flies like to lay their eggs on moist, foul-smelling skin or on fresh carcasses. Risk factors for developing fly strike are constantly moist skin, skin infections, dirty wounds, urine or faecal staining. For sheep, fleece rot from constant wetting during rainy periods is a high risk factor, along with diarrhoea from lush feed or worm infections. Long wool is also a risk factor. For other companion animals, matted hair around the bottom or vulva/penis can be a risk factor. Rabbits frequently succumb when they are kept in dirty moist hutches and are unable to lift their body away from the moisture (usually old, arthritic rabbits). Any skin infection that is not quickly detected and treated is a prime target. Fly strike can be confirmed by visualising maggots crawling across the skin. There is usually a foul odour associated with the strike which becomes familiar to those with sheep or veterinary professionals! It’s the same rotten smell that attracts the flies in the first place. Treatment for all species requires removal of dirty and wet wool/fur and cleansing of the affected skin. Insecticide products may be required depending on the level of infection. Supportive treatments with antibiotics may also be required. There are some residual treatments for flocks of sheep when risk factors are high. Prevention is the best course of action. Sheep producers need to be vigilant when checking sheep. Any fouled wool should be removed (crutching, dagging etc). Good parasite control will reduce cases of diarrhoea from worms and supplementing hay when pasture is lush can help to reduce diarrhoea and wool staining. Companion animal owners need to address wet, smelly skin and hair asap.

09.01.2022 ~ J o e y P o u c h C h e c k ~ Please don’t forget me! If you see a recently deceased animal on the roadside, it is always a good idea to check to see if the animal has a joey (if it is safe to do so). Joeys can survive in their mothers pouch for days after their mothers have died, which is a slow and horrible death for them to endure; so together, lets fight this problem! ... When the joeys are as small as the photos shown, their mouth is fused to their mothers teat, therefor, If you do need to remove a joey from its mother, please never pull it off the teat. Instead, snip the teat from the mother with as much length as possible and secure the end with a safety pin so the joey cant suck It in. We know this may seem disturbing or uncomfortable for some, but it can potentially save irreversible damage to the joeys mouth. Once you have collected the joey from the pouch, it is essential they are kept as warm as possible, (beanies are great) and call us or a wildlife carer as soon as possible to give these little guys the best chance possible.

08.01.2022 I A M N O T A D O G ‘So don’t feed me like one’ The worlds first indoor hunting feeder, because you know why should cats eat like dogs ... At Doc and Phoebes Cat Co, they listen to science, nature and especially our fury friends, and they’re all leading to the same thing - A bowl is the wrong way to feed a cat. Bowl feeding can lead to over feeding, laziness and frustration. The indoor feeder is a naturally instinctive way to feed your cat. Produced and researched by veterinarians, it really is a cool way to keep our felines happy whilst stimulating that ever so important environment enrichment. Also a good behavioural mechanism for cats that suffer from obesity, urinating outside of the litter box, destructive behaviour, night waking and boredom - especially for the indoor cats (like they all should be!) Pretty simple really - scoop their biscuits into the mice, hide the mice and let your cat instinctively hunt for their food. It’s also really darn cute to watch

07.01.2022 ~ Keep Our Penguins Safe ~ The Tasmanian Government has introduced tougher penalties for dog owners whose animals injure or kill penguins. Amid fears that colonies could be wiped out following the deaths of more than 170 penguins in the last two years. Owners will now be fined for dogs that injure or kill sensitive wildlife, while the dogs could also be penalised. The penalty for taking a dog into a prohibited area will also increase.... The new act has been put into place after 42 little penguins were mauled to death by a dog at Wynyard earlier in the year. More than 170 little penguins have died in various colonies around the state in the past year, which wildlife experts say puts the species in a "tenuous" position. Please be vigilent when walking your dogs on our local beaches, take responsibility for the actions of your pets and help keep our wildlife safe!

06.01.2022 ~ T i c k s ~ In Tasmania we have one type of Ixodes tick which can cause paralysis. Though generally not as severe as their mainland sisters, they can still cause paralysis and ultimately death of your pet if left untreated. Female ticks attach onto the skin and secrete saliva into the bite site to prevent blood clotting so that they can have a nice long drink of blood. The saliva contains toxins which lead to paralysis. The long nerves are affected first the hind legs a...nd voice are usually the first areas to show change. Over time the paralysis creeps forward from the back legs until the entire body, including breathing muscles, are affected. Sometimes the toxins can directly affect the heart. On the mainland, running up an approximately 20km east coast band, there are more severe paralysis ticks. Treatment of paralysis tick bites involves the administration of tick antiserum, ventilatory support and other supportive care. However, the best treatment is prevention. Many products are available now to keep ticks off your pet. Come and discuss your options at the clinic. Not all ticks are paralysis ticks. There are many smaller bush ticks which can attach to your pet and cause local irritation. With all ticks, immediate removal is desired. Whether using fingernails or tweezers, the important thing is to grasp the tick underneath its body and pull directly up. The aim is to avoid squeezing the body so that, in theory, you avoid squeezing more toxin into the body. Pull straight up to avoid leaving the mouthpiece in the skin. They usually require a bit of strength to remove. It should be noted that further north in Australia there are other ticks which carry diseases and again, the best treatment is prevention. If you plan to travel to the mainland, please come and chat with us about what other dangers lurk on the big island!

02.01.2022 - G R A S S S E E D S - Grass seeds. These vicious little so-and-sos have a way of getting stuck in the fur of our pets and travelling in one direction only inwards. They can travel into the body at any point, leaving little abscesses and weeping wounds on the skin, or they can get stuck in the eyes, down the ears, in the private parts, between toes, between the teeth, or breathed into the lungs. Occasionally these little suckers will travel further into the body tha...n expected and can end up lodged in body cavities or organs. Their full removal and antibiotic therapy to clean up the mess is the only way of fixing the havoc they leave behind. Prevention is the best cure here. Keep your grass cut short and try to prevent your pet travelling through high grass elsewhere. Consider giving fluffy a short haircut over the summer period to reduce the chance of grass seeds attaching. And always give your loved one a full-body check over daily in the ears, between the toes, under the tail etc. Sometimes you’ll be lucky and find a grass seed just beginning to penetrate the skin grab that bad boy and pull him outta there.
