25.01.2022 Students at FVSSC have been engaging in various physical activities during Thursday afternoon Sport. Towards the end of the Term 3 Gargarra and Muree played in the grand final of the Inter-House Football Competition. It was a nail biting game, which saw Muree snatch the game with a superb team goal in the second half which ensured a 1-0 victory. One of our wonderful students Will T. compiled the highlights from the game. This term, students have engaged in Table Tennis, Fun Fitness 2.0, Touch at Perry Park and Skipping, Holla Hoops and Handball. We love seeing our students with smiles on their faces engaging in a variety of physical activities each and every Thursday afternoon. Plans are underway to expand the physical activities on offer in 2021, if you have any great suggestions please leave them in the comment section below.

25.01.2022 On Monday and Tuesday last week, 84 students competed against the teachers in the inaugural Teachers V Students Trivia Competition. The teachers won the first round Brisbane; however, they then had a steep decline coming last in the second round TV Theme Songs. BRAINACTIVATED stole the lead convincingly during round three Marvel. The teachers attempted a come back in round four General Knowledge. However, BRAINACTIVITATED had too much of a lead and took the gold medal with 55 points. Coming in second place was The Wowsers with 42 points. Our teachers tied sixth place and refuse to speak about it anymore. Well done students!

24.01.2022 Last Wednesday students were invited to a Theatre Sports Guided Workshop. They were introduced to some of the games associated with this amazing, improvised style of drama. In small teams, students were challenged with a range of scenarios and situations where they had to be truly agile learners. Here they learnt to think on their feet, be spontaneous and negotiate some tricky plot lines. A lot of fun was had!

24.01.2022 This term Year 8 Next Discovery students are practising their ability to express opinions and points of view on ethical issues. Students had to debate the topic ‘Driverless cars make for a better future.’ 8D’s debate was full of professional speaking, strong points and researched data; however, the win went to the affirmative side (this time). Teachers look forward to seeing students’ ability to debate and express their opinions respectfully grow throughout many learning activities on ethical issues this term.

22.01.2022 Over the past 4 weeks, the College facilitated its first ever Inter-House Debating knockout competition. Debating helps students foster critical-thinking skills, develop new perspectives on complex issues and builds confidence in public speaking. After three rounds of debates, Houses Bidla-Bidla and Gulumbarum (photographed) made it to the Grand Final. The topic, ‘People aged under 14 years of age should not be able to access social media sites’ was debated brilliantly by both sides. In the end, Bidla-Bidla (Affirmative) won the debate by the small margin of 1 point. Congratulations Bidla-Bidla! And to all 38 students who participated in the competition.

Now, after exploring them under the different virtue areas of Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, Justice, Temperance and Transcendence, students have chosen one area to work on. Remember to ask to see their presentation which outlines their activities and how they are growing both in learning and in life.

11.01.2022 Since 1856, Holy Trinity Anglican Church has been worshipping, working, and serving in Fortitude Valley. The Trinity Pantry started out as a small help service for those who didn't have enough to eat or who had met with some temporary crisis. The pantry is entirely staffed by volunteers, and relies on donations and contributions of food. 30 years later it is now a food assistance service, each year providing for over 1,000 people. This year as a school community, we will be c...ontributing to the Trinity Pantry with a food drive of primarily Christmas items such as: - Long-life custard - Christmas cake - Christmas puddings - Shortbread biscuits - Tinned fruit - Bags of lollies - Minced tarts - Small tins of ham These items can be placed in a collection basket at the school reception. We look forward to having our school community serve the wider city community this festive season!

11.01.2022 Do schools kill creativity? Many of the teaching staff at FVSSC fondly remember watching this talk by the late Sir Kenneth Robinson when it was first published by TED in 2006. FVSSC recognises its core message as still relevant today - intelligence is dynamic, learning should be relevant and prepare students for whats next. Robinson was a passionate advocate for creative thinking in public education. He argued that there exists a global economic and social paradigm shift in ...education driven by technological and demographic change, and proposed that education systems need to transform from prevailing 19th Century industrial models to those that are a better fit for the diverse pathways presented by the 21st Century. He passed away on Sunday, reuniting many educators across the world with the most watched TED talk ever, at over 19 million views. https://youtu.be/iG9CE55wbtY

11.01.2022 The Power of Kindness In the spirit of showcasing the value of kindness, Gulambarum House recreated a well-known but widely contested experiment into the power of words. We all know how good it feels to be praised and how when we feel valued we thrive! The hypothesis of our experiment is that if one jar of rice is exposed to positive words while the other is exposed to negative words, the positive rice will prosper while the other rots. After four hilarious days of the Lov...e and Hate jars receiving generous amounts of praise or criticism, respectively, the Hate jar began to show signs of a festering, black growth, while the Love jar only developed a fine white mist. These findings are represented across our entire Mischief of Magpies as we have together grown our Gulambarum House spirit, using the power of positivity! Artwork by Hudsyn (7E)

08.01.2022 At FVSSC each family belongs to 1 of 6 Houses. In our foundation year students have been building the the culture of their House by developing new rituals, traditions and actions. A part of this process has been building a visual identity for each House. This started in Term 1 with local Indigenous leader Brett Leavy of Virtual Songlines. With his support, each House has selected names, totems (local animals), virtues and colours that respond to features of the local landsca...pe. Today we revealed the House Branding that represents the totems and virtues of each House. Designed by Studio Bland, they each are composed of geometric elements from our College shield. Students were excited to see the designs on our Virtual Valley Rally this morning!

07.01.2022 Were all pedestrians at some time and as pedestrians were especially vulnerable to injury. Unlike people in vehicles, were not protected by seat belts, airbags and metal. As pedestrians, its important to be aware of traffic and surroundings and never assume a driver or rider has seen you. Tips For Road Safety: ... Cross roads, railway and tram tracks at designated crossings (pedestrian crossings, traffic signals or pedestrian refuges) wherever possible. If there is no crossing within 20 metres, cross by the shortest and safest route. For more information visit. qld.gov.au/streetsmarts

04.01.2022 Each Friday morning, teaching staff volunteer their time to share expertise in different areas of teaching and learning, discuss research and reflect on their practice. Each session is aligned to our Colleges strategic priorities around professional learning and development. Last week Head of Department Sarah Milner unpacked a range of co-teaching models. She then facilitated a discussion around their current and potential uses in different learning contexts across the College. Co-teaching is where two or more teachers collaborate to plan, implement and assess learning - a key professional capability for improving integrated curriculum delivery in the Experience Stage (Years 7 and 8).

The afternoon activities were lead by a number of year 7 students, under the guidance of our school Guidance Counsellor Erin Margaritis and teacher Laura Kidd. Students and staff were provided with a delicious Taco lunch made by Dan (owner of Baja Restaurant Fortitude Valley) who runs our school tuck shop (affectionately knows as The Milk Box). Our lunch was gene...rously sponsored by our community partners Lendlease. This lunch enabled our students and teachers an opportunity to sit down, talk about R U OK Day and form wonderful connections outside the classroom. After lunch, students participated in an information session where they learnt invaluable tools and techniques they could use when asking their friends R U OK? This session was followed up by students participating in a range of different inter school house activities, where each house made a pledge to uphold the values of R U OK Day. Special thank you to Dan and his team from Baja for making our incredible lunch and Lendlease for your generous donation.
