22.01.2022 Devastating news over the weekend that Monash University's Centre for Theatre and Performance will be closed at the end of this year - a huge loss to Melbourne's theatre scene and the industry across the country. We've been lucky enough to have many of the centre's staff, students and alumni present groundbreaking theatre in our veune over the years.

21.01.2022 "My hands found the way to work gently with the material, bundle by bundle, knot by knot; suddenly, I was creating something that made me feel calm and peaceful. Healing Leaf was a way to connect back with my inner voice, creativity and passion for making textiles." @yunpmar HERE is online now at https://www.fortyfivedownstairs.com//fragments-exhib/here/. Extended to Saturday 3 October! Image: Yunuen Perez, Healing Leaf, 2020, macramé (organic cotton thread), 58 x 34cm.

21.01.2022 "We are, literally, nature. Our brains resemble the bare branches of a tree. Our lungs and vascular system, the tributaries flowing from rivers. Randomness is where we are in this moment." - Anna Taylor HERE is online now at https://www.fortyfivedownstairs.com//fragments-exhib/here/ Image: Anna Taylor, Randomness, Save me, we are nature, acrylic on canvas, 31 x 23cm

20.01.2022 ‘Interrupted Landscape’ merges urban iconography with pastoral contemplation... The viewer is invited to ponder why a fence would find itself in such a context, how it might arrive there, and what its purpose is. For Gerrard and Chu, constraint has inspired a new sense of freedom and dedication. 19.01.2022 Today, a flashback to Awakening - Daniel Lammin's adaption of Frank Wedekind’s masterpiece Spring Awakening, which was presented in our theatre by Monash Uni Student Theatre (MSA) in 2017 (after a ripper of a debut season at Trade's Hall the year before). Anne-Marie Peard described the production: ' confronting and angry and still so very beautiful.' A perfect example of the superb, compelling theatre that is created in our universities.... #fortyfivedownstairs #awakening #MUST #springawakening

17.01.2022 "This work was made in a time when as an Aboriginal woman I was feeling challenged and vulnerable by heated political tensions relating to the wellbeing of First Nations people in this country. It was about creating physical and visceral objects that encompass the trauma experienced when dealing with racism." @blackgin HERE is online now at https://www.fortyfivedownstairs.com//fragments-exhib/here/ Image: Georgia MacGuire, Fear and Loathing in L’Australie - Lungs, 2015, possum skin and ink, 20 x 25cm

17.01.2022 "Early colonial botanical documentation assumed that species exist in perpetuity, but here, the parodic archival image of the Wollemi pine points to the limits and limitations of colonial knowledge systems and to urgent challenges around environmental stewardship. This tree is ‘here’ but only just." 16.01.2022 Today's Friday flashback takes us to 2015 and Gertrude Opera's production of Curlew River by Benjamin Britten. Britten's Noh-inspired opera, with a beautiful score for small chamber orchestra (Forest Collective), was moulded to tell a modern tale, of society's methods of coping with profound loss. 14.01.2022 "Miss Information is an infected confection. Engulfed in an avalanche of online sophistry, drowning in a deluge of toxic lies, overcome by contaminated conspiracy theories, and tempted by poisonous unfounded remedies." @chrisorraus HERE is online now at https://www.fortyfivedownstairs.com//fragments-exhib/here/ Image: Chris Orr, Miss Information, 2020, archival pigment inks on 100% cotton rag, semi opaque royal blue acrylic box frame, 60 x 60 x 8cm... #hereexhibition #hereonline #fortyfivehere #fragments #fragmentsonline #fortyfivefragments #fortyfivealive #fortyfivedownstairs #fortyfivedownstairsgallery #whatsonmelbourne #onlineexhibition #australianart #contemporaryart

11.01.2022 A very quirky and cleverly produced, distanced opera from Vopera - The Virtual Opera Project with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. If you're quick, you can spot an image of our empty theatre at the very end of the film.

05.01.2022 'Making Nonsense' is Janno's response to the pandemic of 2020 with all its accompanying crises, upheaval and disorientation. Understandable as a defiant celebration of life, resilience, humour and absurdity, Janno’s enduring preoccupations as an artist encompass ideas about compassion, love and community as the sustaining principles of a kinder world. - Rose Lang, curator https://fortyfivedownstairs.com/event/making-nonsense/
