25.01.2022 WONDER-WOMAN VISITING OUR EXPO BOOTH By Kim Pilic Yesterday, Forward Steps Mobility enjoyed meeting Wonder-Woman and some other comic characters at our Disability Expo booth in Brisbane. This terrific photograph shows Wonder-Woman, Poison-Ivy and another spidery looking character visiting our exhibit booth. They are seen standing behind Tarhnee and Hailey, who are both sitting towards camera, with Jules, the off-duty dog guide, seen standing in the front and looking wide eye...d at the camera. A number of colourful images can bee seen on display left and right of the comic characters, attached to backdrop walls. Forward Steps Mobility's business banner can also be seen centre of image behind Poison Ivy. This was a lot of fun!! 25.01.2022 CHRISTMAS SHOPPING AT PACIFIC FAIR By Kim Pilic Mission accomplished for these happy shoppers, who all enjoyed some objective and spontaneous Christmas shopping at Pacific Fair. At the completion of this activity, a supermarket trolley was laden with goodies ready to bring good cheer into the hearts of their loved ones. An enjoyable day for all, including Jules, the dog guide, who usually loathes shopping. She did a commendable job in navigating the crowds and following ou...r direction of travel in and out of shops. "Great shopping with you ladies - thanks for a fun and interesting day. Looking forward to our next shopping expedition together - perhaps on Boxing Day!?". Shoppers: Hailey, Tarhnee, Gabbi and Kat. 25.01.2022 OUR DAY TRIP TO TOOWOOMBA By Kim Pilic As the Year 2020 draws to a close, it's wonderful reflecting on some of the good things that happened. One of those lovely reflections includes the commencement of Day Trips, involving interesting and enjoyable locations. These terrific images were taken during a visit to Toowoomba with Hailey and Tarhnee, along with their working dogs. We all enjoyed walking amongst an incredible display of Jacaranda trees, with wafting perfume scents ...delighting the senses. 24.01.2022 KAY CHEERFULLY EXERCISING By Kim Pilic Today I called in to catch up with Kay and Kevin Carney, following completion of a local 5 kilometre walk not far from their home on the Gold Coast. When I arrived at their place, Kay was in the middle of completing some exercises; she was lying face down on her lounge room carpet floor. I also caught up on her latest knitting project, which will become a beanie for her brother. In this entertaining video clip, you will hear Kay, her su...pport worker Nelly and I talking about her exercises and knitting projects. This was candid spontaneity at its best. I love this precious couple, who are both in their seventies. Despite their age, both Kevin and Kay utilise adaptive technology and various mod cons to assist their daily living activities. In fact, theyre so techno savvy they have a smart television, a Google home, talking microwave, smart phones with various Apps, and many other gadgetry pieces that can be heard talking periodically in the background of their lovely home. Whilst Kevin doesnt appear in this video, it should be mentioned that hes a man with Greenthumbz, whose roses are flourishing happily in his front garden, following some heavy pruning and fertilisation. Both Kevin and Kay lead a full and happy life individually and as a married couple, having celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. Im feeling blessed to be connected to their lives. 23.01.2022 JUSTINS APPRAISAL OF THE WEWALK SMART CANE By Kim Pilic Justin Vanboxtel recently conducted a Smartcane road test of sorts, during Orientation and Mobility training along a new travel route in his local area. Without question, Justin was in his element during the trial of the WeWalk Smartcane, because technology is his forte. His technological knowledge, aptitude, interest and experience in this specialised area is very impressive. Whats more, he enjoys the opportunity to a...ssist and teach others about technology, especially individuals living with blindness and low vision. Whether Smartphone related, computers or i-pads, his depth of knowledge is broad. I therefore asked Justin to review his lived experience findings in relation to the WeWalk cane. What follows is Justins firsthand account appraisal of this electronic primary mobility travel aid, with GPS capabilities. Heres his list of pros and cons: WeWalk Cane Pros: - Provides turn by turn navigation - Good support for public transportation timetables and locations - Updates on time to location - Very good overhead detection with sonar - Refreshers navigation - It pairs very well with the Smartphone App WeWalk Cane Cons: - Sound is not very clear - Cane weighs a lot (heavy) - Cane can become loose and wobbly - Occasionally gives wrong directions - Touchpad doesnt always work - Wrist strap not designed to keep folded cane together - Must place the cane inside carry bag when folded - Its quite pricey - Has to be imported from overseas Justins comments and feedback has no doubt provided invaluable insight into this particular Smartcane. Forward Steps Mobility is now inviting your comments, questions, opinions and feedback about this mobility aid. Justin is also being invited to engage in this post, in order to draw upon his own knowledge, experience and insights in responding to your points. It should also be mentioned that Justin is an independent service provider, assisting people with NDIS technology related needs and their associated goals. 22.01.2022 JAMIES GO-KARTING FUN By Kim Pilic Today I had the good pleasure of participating in some social and recreational activities with Jamie on the Gold Coast. Initially, we enjoyed viewing a scenic outlook over the Broadwater from The Spit, where a cuppa was also savoured. However, the real highlight of the day was Jamies Go-Karting fun, this being the first time hed ever hit the track. Despite his low vision, Jamie looked like a pro, being super confident in his approach to d...riving, including navigating the courses configuration of straight stretches, turns, tight bends and gradient changes without difficulties. It was a true pleasure and privilege to observe him enjoying and mastering this driving related feat. Needless to say, his adrenaline was pumping as he took to the track and accomplished an impromptu aspiration. And what a bonus to have had the track all to himself. 19.01.2022 DAVID AND HAILEY VISITING BRAILLE HOUSE By Kim Pilic David, Hailey, Orella (dog guide), and I, all took the opportunity to visit Braille House in Brisbane last week, in order to view a 3D model of Fairfield Railway Station. In these photographs, both David and Hailey are seen reading Braille information concerning specifications and inclusions about the stations impending makeover. It was actually refreshing attending a small public gathering where Braille literacy was the n...orm, rather than visual print. I loved the fact that they were in Braille House, aptly reading Braille in accessible format, whats more, that I needed to ask them what they were reading, in terms of content. This was a good example of inclusive consultation practices promoting and empowering the voices of people who experience blindness. 18.01.2022 ADVOCATING FOR SAFER PEDESTRIAN ACCESS By Kim Pilic Part of my role as an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist involves advocating for safer community access for long cane and dog guide travellers, and of course, the community at large. Im pleased to report that recent advocacy requests for obstructive and head height foliage removal was proactively addressed by Councillor Donna Gates, in Division 3, of City of Gold Coast. In addition, a request for installation of war...ning tactile ground surface indicators (TGSIs), at an audio/tactile light controlled crossing, was also actioned by Forward Steps Mobility. This matter was directed to Councillor Brooke Patterson, Division 6, City of Gold Coast. The next step is to address the need for tactile ground surface indicators on an internal shopping centre carpark zebra crossing, for tactile recognition, subsequently promoting enhanced pedestrian safety. This important safety need was recently identified during an Orientation and Mobility travel route training activity with Justin Van Boxtel. Advocating for safer more inclusive communities is an important element of collaborative approaches between citizens with blindness/ low vision, Forward Steps Mobility, the community at large and City of Gold Coast. As an O&M Specialist, I have a collaborative responsibility to ensure every individual I work with is mobilising from point A to point B with the highest degree of safety, dignity and inclusive participation around access. On that basis, advocacy is an essential ingredient for addressing and redressing elements of the built environment which need to be improved. 18.01.2022 DOG NAPPING AT BRAILLE HOUSE By Kim Pilic Sharing a lovely photograph of Orella curled up sleeping in harness at Braille House last week. She took opportunity for some refreshing sleep following her working morning with Hailey. In addition, her working trek up an extremely steep gradient of Dudley Street, before arriving at Braille House, also required some physical exertion. 15.01.2022 CRUISING ON THE BRISBANE RIVER By Kim Pilic Yesterday afternoon was the perfect opportunity to enjoy a forty minute boat cruise along the Brisbane River. This great action shot was taken near the Story Bridge during our journey from Brett's Wharf to Southbank. Most individuals positioned themselves at the front of the ferry, so as to enjoy pleasant sensations of the blowing wind. In addition, we felt a few shadows from overhead bridges whilst passing underneath them, such as... the Story Bridge, Captain Cook Bridge and the Good Will Bridge. On several occasions, we also felt movement and water-spray from the wake of passing boats. The cruise was a very pleasant recreational activity for all participants, and a great way to finish the day. Keep an eye out for some more fantastic images capturing enjoyable moments. Forward Steps Mobility is continuing to run social and recreational group outings, in addition to Orientation and Mobility services and individual social, recreational and community support. 12.01.2022 Recreational Walking on the Gold Coast by Kim Pilic Today, Justin, Andrew, Hailey and her dog guide, Orella, and I, all enjoyed participating in a recreational walking group activity, at panoramic Emerald Lakes, on the Gold Coast. Our walk was preceded by social conversations over a cuppa, before enjoying sensory stimulation of this beautiful, interesting and enjoyable location. Apart from a very brief gentle sprinkling of rain, which lasted about five minutes, the weather co...nditions were favourable for completing this activity. During our walk, we had a most unexpected and pleasant encounter. Five mature signet swans were seen paddling by the lakes edge, at a close vantage point. Orella seemed fascinated by this waterbird activity, particularly at close range. I love the spontaneous nature and sensory occurrences during recreational activities. Our 4 km walking journey incorporated a variety of pleasant landscapes, lake activities, and much more. Thank you for a terrific day Justin, Andrew, Hailey and Orella. It was a great walk, in a beautiful setting, with perfect company, and ideal walking conditions. Looking forward to our next group activity in a fortnight. 12.01.2022 CONGRATULATING SONJA FROM QUEENSLAND RAIL By Kim Pilic Im sitting here reflecting over the past week which contained many highlights and memorable moments, including unexpected encounters. One of those memorable moments was the pleasant surprise of encountering Sonja Mowatt from Queensland Rail, on Nerang railway station platform. Since Hailey Lindermann and I last saw Sonja, she was awarded a Customer Service badge for her good work; in fact, shed just received it prior... to our arrival that morning. How wonderful to be in the right place at the right time in order to congratulate her for this award, along with a promotion to becoming a trainee guard. Sonja will be undertaking a four month training course in Brisbane, in preparation for her role. Hailey and I were stoked to hear of Sonjas good news following our initial contact with her last month. 12.01.2022 ENJOYING BEACH-SIDE WALKING By Kim Pilic Today, Hailey, Orella (dog guide) and I, enjoyed visiting several pristine beaches located down the southern end of the Gold Coast. The weather was picture perfect, allowing for a pleasant walking opportunity. The ocean appeared shimmering and sparkly, as the sun reflected light on top of the waters surface, as if dancing. The water also appeared as a gorgeous aqua blue during our visit, with many onlookers, pedestrians and cyclists ...enjoying opportunity for some outdoor recreational activities alongside stunning scenery. A number of pedestrians also took advantage of todays idyllic weather conditions, seeking opportunity to walk their dogs. In fact, we encountered many happy dogs today, with each one demonstrating social politeness. A great day to be out and about with good company, great weather and a terrific location. 08.01.2022 SWAN ENCOUNTERS AT EMERALD LAKES By Kim Pilic During our walk last Friday, the awesome foursome, namely Hailey, Orella, Justin and Andrew, encountered some mature signet swans swanning on Emerald Lakes. Orella seemed fascinated and interested in observing these feathered creatures up close. They were neither phased nor deterred by our presence, continuing to swim in nearby proximity. It was truly wonderful to encounter their presence on the mirrored lake surface. I had seen ...these birds on a smaller lake as infants, at which time they appeared as fluffy light grey signets, being raised in a safe habitat from dreaded predatory eels. Each of the swans had individual orange bands placed around their right leg, as though being monitored by Parks and Wildlife services. It was evident that they had not yet reached full maturity, with plumage not quite jet black in colour. It was wonderful to share in this encounter together, during our recreational walk. Every time I visit this pristine location, something new awaits my arrival. Looking forward to the next Forward Steps Mobility recreational and social group activity at this location in just under two weeks. Please PM me if you are interested in participating. This team took it all in their stride, enjoying opportunity to tackle something a little bit out of the ordinary. The photograph was taken during our Emerald Lakes group activity walk yesterday. No doubt about Elvis - hes one "can do" kind of doggy, whose big heart exudes a happy demeanour through his body languag...e. 08.01.2022 THE PERFECT MORNING FOR A GROUP WALK By Kim Pilic Today, Forward Steps Mobility had the pleasure of launching a larger group activity at Emerald Lakes, on the Gold Coast. It was the perfect morning for a walk in good company. Anne-Marie, Jenny, Hailey, Peter, Kushal, Jim, Chris and I, participated in an approximate 5 kilometre recreational walking activity around the lakes circumference. Of course we also stopped for some social chatter while enjoying morning tea at Gloria ...Jeans coffee shop. We met quite a number of well-controlled and sociable doggies on our walk, along with some olfactory enjoyment at the smell of breakfast cooking on an outdoor barbecue along a section of the eastern side of the lake. The lake itself presented in picture perfect conditions with a mirrored appearance reflecting the sky, bushland and housing structures, without a visible ripple on its surface. Strong winds have been forecast for today; however, we had the perfect morning with the slightest of breeze. At the completion of our activity, the strong winds began to blow. How perfect was the timing of this walk! Of course, I need to mention there were three dog guides on duty during the recreational walk, each with a happy, energised and bounce in their strident steps. Miss A guided Anne-Marie, Elvis guided Jenny, and Orella guided Hailey. Each team did a commendable job on navigating this environment. Both Kushal and Peter utilised long canes, instead of the canine variety. It was indeed the perfect morning to be out and about enjoying a recreational walk together. Thank you for a terrific morning everyone! Forward Steps Mobility is pleased to offer and continue running regular recreational and social group activities. We also offer weekend walks, as per todays enjoyable and successful activity. If you or somebody you know are interested in participating in future group activities, please feel free to PM me (Kim). I would love to have the pleasure of your company! This video shows two Beautiful ladies, Hailey and Tarhnee, walking amongst the splendour of large Jacaranda trees with their dog guides. These trees were seen lining a main road in Toowoomba during a brief weekend getaway. The brilliance of purple flowers ador...ning these incredible trees was absolutely captivating. In this video, both Hailey and Tarhnee are seen walking underneath a thick canopy of purple flowers, as branches extended over the footpath and above their heads. Fallen purple flowers are seen underfoot, as decorative dappled confetti, adding aesthetic pleasure to the scene. The perfumed fragrance of the Jacaranda flowers also added to sensory delights of the olfactory variety. 07.01.2022 I agree with this. Copied from a friend. Dear sighted world: I dont mean this post to be funny, and I also dont mean it to be rude. Truly, I would love to educate you about two things you can easily do to make a blind persons day a little easier and frankly, more enjoyable and normal. First of all, always feel free to give information. When a blind person is approaching a chair where you are sitting, and there is an open chair to the left or right of you, or even acros...Continue reading

07.01.2022 TARHNEE AND JULESS SHOPPING EXPEDITION By Kim Pilic Today, I had the great pleasure of providing Tarhnee and her dog guide, Jules, with some Orientation and Mobility training at a shopping centre, located in Northern New South Wales. Our activities also extended into culinary delights, including coffee and cake, as well as some objective shopping. Tarhnee asked Jules to, "Find the coffee shop", and without hesitation, her guiding intelligence saw mission accomplished. In re...lation to shopping, after a little while, it was evident this wasnt Juless favourite activity - she much preferred line of travel walking from point to point, rather than lying around whilst we browsed various merchandise. Observationally, two pet stores and Bunnings appeared to be her favourite shopping destinations, both of which contained interesting sights, sounds and olfactory stimulation. Unsurprisingly, after a big day on the job, Jules curled up comfortably at Tarhnees feet, in the foot-well of my car, before heading homeward bound. 06.01.2022 A POSITIVE NOTE ABOUT OUR PRESENTATION I am feeling touched and blessed by a lovely email communication received from Patricia Arora during the week. I met Patrica last week during a community education presentation with Hailey, her dog guide, Orella, and Justin. Sharing this eloquently expressed communication, as well as extending heartfelt thanks to Hailey and Justin for their engaging and personable presentations. "Hello Kim,... Thank you for your kind message, the photographs and of course your time and effort. I will certainly use the photos in our next column in the Scenic News publication, Newsletter & FB page and will send you a copy. It was an absolute pleasure to host you, Justin, Hailey & Orella (hope the spelling is correct) visit us and share the information you all did in such a warm and natural manner. The Friday Friendship Group were deeply touched by the simplicity and courage with which Justin and Haley shared their experience straight from the heart. In addition, the group appreciated all the information you poured out so generously with precision and believe that has helped them tremendously in what they are to be aware of at this stage regarding their vision. A special thanks to you for a wonderful presentation Kim. Kindly convey my warm regards to Justin, Hailey and her lovely Orella. We all had to restrain ourselves from having a little cuddle with her, as she was on duty. Thank you once again! 05.01.2022 FRANCES TRAVELLING INDEPENDENTLY By Kim Pilic I always feel honoured, privileged and blessed in literally journeying alongside individuals on their pursuits for independent travel. Working, or should I say walking with Frances last week was no exception. Francess pursuit in accessing Garden City Shopping Centre, from her home, including return travel, was a tremendous accomplishment. This humble, unassuming and courageous soul took it all in her literal stride, utilising a ...long and support cane simultaneously. In addition, her independent travel skills included bus travel, orientation strategies, visual maximisation techniques and a variety or road crossings. "Well done on an outstanding accomplishment Frances. Every facet of your semi-solo travel skills, strategies and techniques were commendable. Looking forward to meeting you at Garden City in a fortnight following your anticipated solo expedition to this location". 04.01.2022 LEADER OF THE PACK! By Kim Pilic This is a terrific photograph of Hailey and her dog guide, Orella, leading the pack during our recreational group walk activity yesterday. Orella and Elvis, (dog guides), took turns in assuming the lead position, swapping intermittently with each other throughout the walk. Anne-Maries dog, affectionately known as "Miss L", politely allowed the others to take the lead position. All doggys and their handlers did themselves proud throughout th...e walking circuit, unflinching and unwavering in their steadfast approach to safely guiding. 04.01.2022 VISITING TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN By Kim Pilic Today, Hailey, her dog guide Orella, Justin, and I, all visited Tamborine Mountain Community Care Association, where a dozen attendees of the senior variety enjoyed our presentation. Todays activity involved education and information about blindness and low vision, including Orientation and Mobility (O&M) service types available through Forward Steps Mobility. In addition, Justin covered interesting points around technology, includin...g a brief demonstration of the WeWalk Smart Cane. Hailey spoke about dog guide mobility, including elements from her lived experience, allowing Orella and the audience to have some friendly off duty interactions, whilst out of harness. A couple of the seniors also shared their experiences about living with low vision, including treatments provided. Following our presentation, we all enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Manor Restaurant, where antique furnishings and collectables surrounded this environment. We also enjoyed lingering fragrant scents from open-fireplace smoke aromas, although todays mild weather conditions didnt necessitate the cosiness of burning fires. Fresh cut flowers also adorned tabletops, including roses. Following our lunch, we enjoyed a walk along shop frontages of Eagle Heights. Needless to say, being in this part of the world required a visit to a fudge shop, where an assortment of culinary sweetness awaited happy sweet-toothed customers. Finally, before departing the mountain, we stopped for an afternoon coffee at Le Chille Cafe, including opportunity to sample some handmade chocolates by a local chocolatier. "Thank you Hailey and Justin for a terrific day. You were both impressive speakers, with such a warmth of communication and a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with a very captive audience. We were all blessed from above in seeing a clear blue sky upon the mountain, especially after experiencing a grey sky blanketed by clouds without any patch of blue on the Gold Coast during our travels. A perfect day with perfect company - thank you for sharing your day and time so generously". 01.01.2022 A 3D TACTILE MAP OF FAIRFIELD RAILWAY STATION By Kim Pilic Forward Steps Mobility was delighted to have accompanied Hailey and David to a recent 3D model tactile viewing opportunity of Fairfield Railway Station. The activity was hosted in partnership by Braille House, together with Cross River Rail and Unity Alliance. This representation and public viewing invitation was seen as an inclusive consultation approach, by providing firsthand innovative dimensional imaging, as a m...eans of seeking feedback from individuals. The 3D mapping affect proved a useful tool for tactually, cognitively and spatially mapping planned upgrades, which also included Braille labelling, explaining various aspects of expectant inclusions in this environment. What a terrific concept! The 3 D model map representation was plastic and plain white in colour, providing an ability to dismantle various structural components in order to gain an overall perspective of dimensions, positions and directions. "Thank you Hailey and David for inviting me along to be a part of this unique and important opportunity. And well done Braille House, Cross River Rail and Unity Alliance for your thoughtful community inclusion approach".
