20.01.2022 BIG HEAD It is that time of year again for the Biloela region, after some much needed rain all the grass becomes green & then goes to seed, with that brings 'big head' for horses. So what is big head?... Big head is a severe calcium deficiency in horses which is caused by horses having a low calcium or excessive phosphorus diet. This results in the horses body having to pull calcium from there bones to help maintain there blood calcium levels. Prolonged calcium deficient horses use excessive amounts of bone mineral mainly from there facial & pelvic bone which becomes fibrous connective tissue develops. The fibrous tissue cause the facial bone to swell giving them a "big head" Young horses are most susceptible to facial swelling as there bones have not completely formed or hardened. What causes big head? The most common cause of horses getting 'big head' in this area is horses grazing oxalated pastures. This includes tropical grasses such as - * Buffel * Setaria * Green panic * Kikuyu grass These are more common when the pasture is green & in seed. What are the symptoms of big head? * Enlargement of facial features (swelling of the jaw as the bone enlarge) * Lameness - horses with be stiff & have a short gait * Loss of condition/ rough coat * Noisy breathing during exercise (upper airways become obstructed due to swollen bones) * Loose/ shifting teeth How do I prevent/ treat big head? There are a couple of options when it comes to treating & preventing big head. 1. Limit the amount of time the horses are grazing on oxalate pastures. 2. Feeding hay high in calcium such as Lucerne & rye grass. 3. Supplement calcium through using loose lick, lick blocks or mineral supplements that can be mixed into your horses daily feed ration.
