24.01.2022 In old European beliefs, the 'Hand of Glory' was a dried hand of a hanged murderer, that had candles attached to it and was used in magick spells to render inhabitants of a house unconscious. We will be talking about this and other amazing historical customs on next week's 'Folklore, Myth and Magick' night tour at the cemetery, and there are still places available - www.fosbc.com/tours/folklore-death/

11.01.2022 The Guardian Angels (24 people in total) were at the South Brisbane Cemetery again in November and got a few dozen graves washed and tidied, as well as a bit of office cleaning and skip filling. It was a lovely coolish day and the camaraderie was strong. We'll be getting together for an end of year picnic next month, which will be a chance to sit back and reflect on the fantastic work everybody has done this year.

10.01.2022 Morning everyone, this is a reminder that we'll be at the cemetery again today for another brilliant amazing incredible Guardian Angels day, and some final prepping for next week's anniversary event. Hoping to see you there

08.01.2022 I would like to congratulate all the wonderful volunteers who work so hard to maintain the cemetery and clean and repair the graves. I travel to the Cemetery e...ach Anzac Day to clean my Grandfather's Grave (WW1 soldier) and noticed how much nicer the cemetery looks than last year. There has been a big change and it reflects the hard work contributed by all the volunteers. Well done everyone. I hope one day to be able to contribute also. See more

07.01.2022 The cemetery flora is in early summer flower, so the place has a nice splash of colour and scent at this time of year which attracts lots of butterflies and insects. Always good to see.

05.01.2022 Last chance for this comp! The winner will be announced tomorrow morning.

05.01.2022 Tipuana tipu, a widespread tree in the cemetery, is in flower at this time of year. Also known as pride of Bolivia, race-horse tree, rose wood, tipu tree, tipuana tree, and yellow jacaranda. Pretty, but also an invasive weed that needs to be managed carefully.

05.01.2022 At eleven o’clock today we pause to Remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in all wars and armed conflicts. The South Brisbane Cemetery is scattered with official War Commission Graves but there are even more memorials on family graves that mention a loved one lost in war that are buried overseas or missing. These memorials often go un-noticed but their importance was invaluable. When they were erected, they gave a place for family to go to grieve, remember and to hel...Continue reading
