24.01.2022 When children cannot be cared for at home with their biological parent or parents, other adults who have a caring concern for them, or children more generally, take on the caregiving role. In many cases this is a member of the child's family (Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, even older siblings). It might also be a family friend or other person who has an relationship with the child and/or their family. [ 668 more words ] http://colbypearce.net//you-are-not-my-parent-how-do-i-re/

21.01.2022 With the uptake of strengths-based approaches to child welfare practice in Australia and related child protection jurisdictions in Europe and North America, it is timely to consider what is 'good' parenting and caregiving. In this article I briefly introduce a model for considering what is 'good' parenting and caregiving in terms of the benefits it affords the developing child. That is, a model for identifying assets that are central to strengths-based practice. [ 699 more words ] http://colbypearce.net//what-is-good-parenting-and-caregi/

19.01.2022 Dear followers of this page. I have decided to concentrate my posts to the Secure Start Page and will soon deactivate this page. If you want to continue to receive posts about my work, and have not already done so, please follow my Secure Start Page: https://www.facebook.com/SecureStart/?ref=your_pages

19.01.2022 In this, the fourth in a series of posts about resources I am distributing to help caregivers of children during these extraordinary times, I highlight the importance for children and young people of being heard and understood. Science shows that feeling heard and understood by a trusted adult is like a psychological vaccine against mental health problems and behaviour problems. Feeling heard and understood supports wellbeing and a confident approach to life and relationships. [ 172 more words ] http://colbypearce.net//a-little-extra-understanding-in-t/

18.01.2022 This short article is a brief follow-up to Disaster Relief: Helping Children During (and After) Community Traumatic Events. You can access the full article by clicking here. Here are my five tips for supporting children impacted by natural disasters, such as the current bushfire crisis in Australia: As far as possible, maintain normal routines, including in relation to mealtimes, bedtime, and daily activities. 18.01.2022 Children first learn that we are accessible to them during infancy when we attend to them whether they are crying or quiet. Attending to infants whether they are crying or quiet provides experiences of their worth, of our proximity and responsiveness, and of their safety in the world. In time, these experiences support emerging beliefs about themselves, others, and their world that influence a child's approach to life and relationships. 17.01.2022 As the Coronavirus (COVID19) continues to impact how we go about our lives, a common concern is how parents will work from home or perform other daily tasks when the children cannot attend school or childcare. This concern is particularly salient as, due to their sensitivity to the emotions of others and their own knowledge and experience of the Cononavirus, children (and young people) are likely to experience a heightened proneness to anxiety at this time. 17.01.2022 Hello again. I am taking my own advice and maintaining a consistent routine as much as possible during these extraordinary times by posting content that I hope will prove to be useful to caregivers of children and young people. If you have appreciated receiving the resources I have released thus far, keep an eye out for an expanded resource that I will be releasing in the next week or so. 16.01.2022 Children recovering from early adversity, including trauma and other adverse events, need a little extra CARE from adult who interact with them in a care and management role. 14.01.2022 The Kinship CARE Project is an initiative of Secure Start. At Secure Start, we believe that Kinship Carers make a highly valuable contribution to the care of children in need, and to society. Yet, kinship carers do not always get the support they need. The Kinship CARE Project reflects our commitment to providing kinship carers with knowledge and strategies that supports them in the kinship carer role. 14.01.2022 Hi everyone. In a follow-up to yesterday's post, I thought I would provide a complementary resource that acknowledges that in tough times children benefit from a little extra CARE also. This seems most apt in this most troubling of times. I intend to post regularly through this period and provide further practical resources and guidance for parents and caregivers of children. 14.01.2022 In these extraordinary times I have noticed that there has been increased interest in this article, written some years ago, but still containing relevant information. What I would add is the role of CARE, which extends what I refer to in this article as aspects of parenting and caregiving that foster resilience (Accessibility, Sensitive Responsiveness, Affective Attunement). If you have been a recent visitor to this site you will have seen that I have been releasing resources about how to implement CARE in support of children's wellbeing and adjustment in these difficult times. 12.01.2022 In my therapeutic work with children and young people I incorporate play activities in order for them to experience themselves in a way that challenges existing unhelpful ideas. My intent is to support and strengthen an alternative self-concept that is reflective of attachment security and secure attachment representations (a.k.a. internal working models). That is, I utilise play to support and strengthen positive beliefs about self, other, and world, including: [ 579 more words ] http://colbypearce.net//the-aqua-balloon-an-allegory-abou/

11.01.2022 I was talking to an overseas colleague today about the provision of psychotherapy services to young people who are in the most desperate of circumstances. This includes young people who are no longer able to be cared for in a family-based care environment, who find themselves bouncing between residential care, secure care, youth training centres (juvenile justice facilities), and homelessness. Often attempts are made to refer these young people to conventional mental health services, only for the young person to "not engage" or not meet service eligibility requirements. 08.01.2022 One of the more common struggles reported by parents and caregivers is getting children off to sleep in their own bed. What follows is a simple method to address this issue that I often recommend, and that I used with my own children. Before I get to the method, I want to advise that there are many and varied reasons why children have difficulty getting off to sleep in their own bed. 07.01.2022 Emotional connectedness is a by-product of interaction. When you are interacting with a person you are likely to feel an 'echo' of their emotion. This is a form of empathy that is instinctive and, with few exceptions, we all have the capacity to experience this instinctive empathy. The 'echo' a parent feels of their child's emotion played an important role in supporting the child's emotional development, including: [ 455 more words ] http://colbypearce.net//a-little-extra-emotional-connecte/

06.01.2022 In recent times much attention has been directed towards the so-called 'panic buying' of staples, including toilet paper and other hygeine products. The Prime Minister of Australia has told the population to "stop it", by which he meant for people to stop buying and hoarding staples in anticipation of a lack of supply. He has told us that there is enough to go around, presumably if we all think and act rationally in relation to accessing staples. 06.01.2022 Kinship CARE is a comprehensive training package for trauma-informed care and practice among kinship carers and professionals who support them. Kinship CARE is tailored to the experience and training needs of kinship carers. Kinship CARE recognises that, for kinship carers, relational connection is important. Kinship CARE supports enriched relational connections. Kinship CARE also recognises that children and young people who cannot safely be cared for at home or are recovering from a tough start to life have additional care needs. 02.01.2022 We are experiencing remarkable times. The Coronavirus (COVID 19) has brought with it a great deal of uncertainty, for all of us. Uncertainty is stressful. Certainty allows us to predict what will happen, when it will happen, and how it will happen. Predictability allows us to get on with what we are doing unhindered by uncertainty about what lies ahead. When the road ahead is difficult, predictability allows for preparation.
