25.01.2022 Great to see Simone McGurk MLA leading a carer focussed review of the WA foster care system. There is evidence that foster carers feel undervalued, not consulted and often feel frustrated with slow and often inexplicable decision making. #WAfostercare #fosteringchange #valuecarers
25.01.2022 There is no doubt that we have a foster care system that could and should be improved. This article paints a bleak picture of the current system in WA. However, what we need first is better recognition of the importance of the very best care and support for vulnerable children by everyone in our community. Child protection workers need manageable caseloads, foster carers need to be a real part of the care team and we all need to play our part in advocating for an evidence-informed care system. Nearly everyone involved in child protection and care has the right intentions but without the resourcing, support and research evidence, we won't get it right. These stories need to be told. https://www.watoday.com.au//the-ghost-list-foster-kids-lan
24.01.2022 It's time we look at our current model of foster care and examine whether it is outdated and unsustainable.
23.01.2022 Some interesting seminars coming up.
22.01.2022 The response to children and young people who have experienced trauma in schools is so critical to their development, personally and academically. This school is working towards a trauma-informed framework which assists children when they are struggling to cope #traumainformed #thoughtfulschool
21.01.2022 We need to make post secondary education more accessible for young people who have a care experience. This initiative is potentially life changing for so many young people.
20.01.2022 This ABC News story reveals the foster carer's point of view, something that is often missing in the media and in the research. An insightful view about the foster care system, "the common thread connecting many of them was they were acutely aware of their own circumstance." Yes, children have a heightened level of awareness of their situation, even if they don't fully understand why they are in care. #fostercaresystem #wemustdobetter #fostercarervoices
19.01.2022 Great PD opportunity here. Howard is rarely in Perth and is an excellent presenter. #drhowardbath #beyondtrauma #traumatraining
18.01.2022 "The inquiry found that the system often inflicted more harm on the children after they were removed from their families". With so many damning indictments on our foster care system, surely broad-scale reform is overdue. More attention needs to be given to keeping children at home with intensive support being given to families, early intervention and more attention to quality care and involvement of birth families. #families #fostercare #parenting #support ... https://mobile.abc.net.au//foster-care-residenti/11759266
17.01.2022 An innovative and much needed longitudinal study is being conducted in Western Australia as a partnership between Curtin and Monash Universities. The intention of the research is to better understand the issues that impact on young people transitioning from care. You can find out more at the research website and please refer any young people who may be interested in being involved https://www.navigatingthroughlife.org/
16.01.2022 Some tickets are still available for this event. Come and help us improve our foster care system.
