19.01.2022 GOLD’S ROLE IN COVID-19 | Gold is being used in many COVID-19 diagnostic test kits, where tiny spherical particles in lateral flow assays (or LFAs) are ‘indicat...ors’ to help determine if a person has been infected with the virus. This LFA was utilised in China at the beginning of the outbreak and has now received certification for use in Europe. Gold nanoparticles are likely to be at the heart of many new COVID-19 LFAs certified for use around the world in the coming weeks and months. These test kits will help to complement lab-based testing and further equip healthcare professionals and scientists to understand and track the pandemic.
