23.01.2022 Its been a long time coming to Western Australia but finally ball sporting bodies and grounds owner/managers have picked up the ball on spectator and passerby safety. The first, of what undoubtedly will be numerous, installation of "Ball Sport Safety Net Structures consisting of 4 x 12m poles with the catch net spanning 30 metres went off without a hitch for the Foundation Engineering Group. Foundation Engineering’s engineer Ali Bataghva designed both a concrete bored pile a...nd a mono-screwpile option to cater for variable ground conditions and the fast installation of foundations and pole erection. The time frame for the first project was extremely tight so anything that saved time and money was introduced into the design and installation. The original pole design and connection interface to a mass concrete footing that was designed by another engineering firm was completely revised to a more cost effective solution. One that allowed for "a same" universal pole and connecting interface design regardless of which foundation option was required in accordance with site and ground specific conditions. This enabled the mass production of poles for future projects thereby reducing manufacturing costs. Ali considered the concrete bored pile the most appropriate for the first site being the sports field in Mandurah That selection proved to be a wise one as rock boulders were encountered at one auguring location. Sporting fields are inherently located on reclaimed land, or rehabilitated rubbish tips, so the likelihood of ground variability is high. Foundation Engineering carries out a geotechnical assessment of site's prior to nominating the piled foundation type. Final outcome? Articulate planning delivered an on time and under budget outcome for both us and our client so we can't ask for more than that. Well done to our crew, Dave, Wayne, Andrew, Matt and Andy and the rest of the team who combined, manufactured the poles and foundations, constructed the caged and pier'd concrete bored piles and erected the 12m poles at lightening speed. You made the client very happy. Now get ready for the others.

22.01.2022 Restricted access piling rig installation automatically promotes the use of screw piles as the most cost effective and time efficient piling solution available Once more FEG have demonstrated this through the successful design and installation of 985kN/460kN (ultimate) compression/tension screwpiles at Wesley College redevelopment works. Screwpile Australia was again selected to provide a cost effective piling solution. Based on the geotechnical information installation tor...ques were estimated to range up to 200,000Nm so access for a 35t excavator was needed. Screwpile Australia is the only screw piling company in Western Australia that owns a QA calibrated 200,000Nm pendulum rotary powerhead and Torquatron monitor. Site entry height & width restrictions made machine access challenging for Screwpile Australia's Operations Manager Andrew Gordon and installation needed to occur next to existing walls and services at new foundation locations. Locations were full of existing underground service so care and location accuracy for the screw piles was critical. The experienced and committed screw piling installation team of Matt and Andy made sure installation was in accordance with Screwpile Australia's ISO-9001 QA project management procedures. Foundation Engineering’s senior design engineer, Ali Bataghva, provided a design solution that addressed the induced pile moment forces due to existing wall and services locations. The overall design was cost effective and on budget for the builder. Winding the clock back to 2008, Screwpile Australia installed a number of 400kN compression screw piles in challenging locations at Wesley over existing walls as these images shows.

17.01.2022 Regardless of rain hail or shine, the team at Screwpile Australia and Foundation Engineering get the test piles and load test reaction frame installed & static testing got underway so that installation could continue the next day. Water? Who cares!

15.01.2022 The development of sewer screw piles in 1996 by Screwpile Australia created a quite revolution in the way buildings & structures foundations were piled within WaterCorp easements. Prior to then concrete piles were the norm. Sewer screwpiles eliminate inherant construction problems associated with concrete piles such as, high water-tables, hole collapse and caverning, and hard ground penetration, all resulting in difficulties to achieving the minimum specified pile depth to ...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Garvey Park foreshore on the Swan River, Ascot, Western Australia, is currently undergoing an enhancement program. Part of the improvements include new walkways & beach deck ramps for the boating/canoe club. Foundation Engineering was asked to come up with a pile design that would deliver practical installation as the shoreline consisted of very loose-sandy-peaty mud. The potential for acid sulphate soils was also expected. A screw pile design was provided as an installat...ion tolerance (+ or - 50mm) needed to accommodate all the piers of a pre-fabricated deck which was to be cast into the 219CHS pile shafts after installation. Ultimate per pile compression load was only 21kN so final screw pile design was governed predominately by corrosion allowance, installation tolerances mentioned and a 4.0m bearing capacity installation depth. The banks of the Swan River around Ascot, Bayswater etc. consist of Guildford muds with sections of man made sandy beaches for recreation. River water can be brackish and the presence of PASS (Potential Acid Sulphate Soils) or ASS (Actual Sulphate Soils) are common in the immediate areas. A chemical analysis was conducted of the ground conditions and ASS was identified at surface & to a depth of 4.0m. Hot dip galvanised screw in piles were considered most suitable for the sulphate conditions as zero soil disturbance meant no introduction of oxygen into the ground, mitigating any further concentration of the ASS condition already present. Screwpile design catered for a severe corrosion classification allowance of 0.1mm/year for a 50 year design life which formed part of Foundation Engineering’s pile design certification. Screwpile Australia tendered & won the work. Machinery site access was restricted & installation was required on the riverbank with the excavator being kept well off the soft mud bank. A geo-fabric was laid over the to be piles area so as to allow piling offsides access to piled locations. A total of 28 screw piles were installed in under 2 days in accordance with their ISO-9001 QA accreditation & management systems. Soon to be re-opened to the public, new boardwalks & beach decking canoe launching area as well as other amenities.
