24.01.2022 Not sure how I missed this but sharing now because I am so inspired by this 12 year old. Such insight, wisdom and empathy ... and such a desire to help others at such a young age #neurodiversity #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autistic #adhd #neurodivergent #sensoryprocessingdisorder #inclusion #sensoryoverload #anxiety #mentalhealth #neurodiverse #aspergers #aspie #autismspectrum #acceptance #autismfamily #autismmum #differentnotless #love #mentalhealthawareness #sensoryprocessing #aspiegirl

24.01.2022 Love this perspective! So valid & very much aligned with the DIR Floortime approach which I have had the privilege of reflecting on over the last 2 days. I love that I get to help families identify whats going on behind the behaviour, in order to help them connect with their child and deepen their relationship. #lovewhatyoudo #love #autism #awareness #parenting #toddlers #babies #daycare #preschool #kids #speechpathology #playtime #learnthroughplay

23.01.2022 Every day lately I find myself asking/persuading/begging my children to get off devices and get outside. We all know the juggle with work and kids at home right now! Well, today I decided to put my Floortime skills into practice. DIR-Floortime is a relationship-based intervention in which the parent (or therapist) enters into a child's world and engages in their interests with them. Playful positive attention is used to strengthen the bond between the parent/therapist and the... child and help them to make emotional connections. I use it in my practise when working with children with Sensory Processing Disorder or Autism Spectrum Disorder. The thing is, Im realising these last few weeks how valuable a tool it is for life in general!! Today, rather than start the debate again, I decided to ask my 3 boys to teach me how to juggle a soccer ball. It was hilarious fun! First of all, they couldnt wait to get outside to see how Mum would manage the task We laughed so much, and they worked cooperatively to decide how best to teach me. They got lots of practice at the skill themselves and I learnt so much too! including how hard the skill actually is! (I can manage 3 touches only before I lose control and even that was after a LOT of practice). I learnt how much I enjoy joining my kids in their interests, and I learnt an alternative to get them outside and having fun! Success all round! #parenting #parenthood #motherofboys #momofboys #kids #family #floortime #sensoryprocessing #sensoryprocessingdisorder #autism #anxiety #add #mentalhealth #adhdawareness #depression #adhdproblems #asd #dyslexia #adhdlife #mentalhealthawareness #adhdsupport #specialneeds #adhdparenting #sensoryprocessingdisorder #autismawareness #aspergers #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #bhfyp

21.01.2022 After online study & working with so many amazing Floortime trained OTs I am so excited to be doing this course in person!!

21.01.2022 Thank you @RachelRRomeo for this post. It moved me to tears. Last week was Speech Pathology Week; a week that seeks to promote the speech pathology profession and the work done by speech pathologists with the more than 1.2 million Australians who have a communication disability. Communication is a basic human right. This share reminds me how important my job is, and why I am so passionate about what I do!

20.01.2022 Thinking of all my school-aged kiddos today - past & present. Hoping you have a wonderful first day of school filled with lots of fun, friends and new, exciting things to learn #firstdayofschool #firstday2021 #schoolinaustralia #firstterm #goodvibes #goodluckteachers

19.01.2022 Being creative with maintaining connection here. This is Master 8 playing Virtual Hide and Seek with his cousins. Can you see him in the cupboard? For anyone else whose little ones are struggling with not seeing family or friends: It works pretty much the same except the hider covers the camera with their finger while they hide somewhere in the house or yard and the seeker asks a series of questions to which the hider replies cold, warm, hot depending on how close they are. Maintaining connection with family and friends is so important for our childrens health and well-being #childhealth #healthykids #virtualfriends #connection

19.01.2022 On the subject of board games and teaching children to play fair... this is a fantastic article by the Australian website Raising Children that discusses how to introduce board games and what to do if your child is finding it hard to play by rules. https://raisingchildren.net.au//playing-with-oth/fair-play

18.01.2022 This lovely, clear social story was kindly shared by Little Puddins (The Autism Educator) to help families explain COVID-19 to their children. I emailed out a link to this resource a few weeks ago and was so pleased to see in a tele-therapy session today that it has been a big help to one young man! He read me his story and explained from it why everything is different at the moment. I thought I would re-share for anyone else who needs help explaining the situation to their ...children. Thank you Littlepuddins.ie https://littlepuddins.ie/coronavirus-social-story/

18.01.2022 My young client with Childhood Apraxia of Speech was SO motivated to say commands for his own dog so Buster the Shmoodle came along to help with practice. Motivation was through the roof and we got so many repetitions of come, sit, shake, up, drop it was AMAZING Best part was when Buster understood this young man and followed the command! Best therapy motivation ever!! #therapydogsofinstagram #dogs #therapydog #dogtraining #instadog #dogstagram #autismawareness #autism #autismacceptance #autismmom #specialneeds #autismspeaks #asd #autismlove #aspergers #autismsupport #love #disability #adhd #downsyndrome #autismparent #autismcommunity #autismwarrior #kids #inclusion #sensoryprocessingdisorder #bhfyp

18.01.2022 So grateful to be providing therapy back in clinic! 17.01.2022 Play matters!! If you were a fly on the wall in my clinic today here’s what you would have seen... my young fire chief and I taking multiple emergency calls putting out several fires , rescuing a turtle and setting a containment boundary around some lava. What you may or may not have realised is that we were flexing our social brains - sharing our imaginations and negotiating in play. We practised being flexible, letting some of our own ideas go for the sake of the... group, we took turns making decisions, and we added our ideas together to make a group plan. Hard work- Yes! Exhausting - Yes! But so much fun and so worth it ... I LOVE play! and use it often as a vehicle for connection and learning in my therapy esp with my younger clients. Play really is the brain’s favourite way of learning and the best way to effect generalisation of skills learnt. It can be tempting to think of play as simple. The truth is however, that play involves a highly complex array of concepts and skills that work together simultaneously to enable children to interact with others and with the world around them. Through play children learn vital skills such as problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Play also facilitates conceptual development, perspective taking and executive functioning skills. Play is one of the main ways in which children learn and develop and it helps to build self-esteem and confidence by giving a child a sense of his or her own abilities. Pretend play in particular provides critical opportunities for young children to perfect their social thinking and social skills.

16.01.2022 I love this! So timely too as I spent a good deal of time today preparing some Robust Vocabulary Activities to go with some of my favourite childrens books.

15.01.2022 Feeling very appreciated today! So blessed to work with the most amazing kiddos and families! 15.01.2022 So much fun in the Foundations clinic today... Incorporating speech pathology goals into the DIR/Floortime Model. Here we are targeting repetition of core words using Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) for Childhood Apraxia of speech... as well as some emergent literacy... while working on problem-solving... and just having a whole heap of fun playing together in our ice-cream/lolly shop #speechtherapy #speechpathology #childhoodapraxiaofspeech #childhoodapraxia #floortime #dirfloortime #earlychildhood

15.01.2022 Having fun and engaging in some sensory play with spelling while learning@home. Fellow speechies, can anyone spot the odd one out ? One of these words is not like the others. 14.01.2022 Studies have shown a link between frequency of adult-child conversations, and better language outcomes and academic success. Find time to talk with your child throughout the day. Be in the moment with your child. Try to ensure balanced conversations that focus on your childs interests in that moment and that go back and forth between you and your child. To keep conversations going, pay close attention to what your child is interested in, interpret what your child says, make ...comments and ask questions but remember to ask questions that engage your child and keep the interaction going (not testing questions). #parenting #motherhood #momlife #kids #parenthood #family #parents #love #children #baby #parentingtips #mom #mumlife #dadlife #toddler #education #babies #fatherhood #toddler #momblogger #slp #speechpathology #speechtherapy #slpeeps #speechlanguagepathology #slpsofinstagram #speechies #speech #instaslp #slplife #therapy #slpsfollowslps #speechie #speechlanguagepathologist #occupationaltherapy #schoolslp #speechpathologist #speechtherapist #communication #earlyintervention #bhfyp

13.01.2022 Its been a hectic couple of weeks here. I have finally moved in to my new therapy space and couldnt be happier! ...not too far from where I was at Mitchelton. 12.01.2022 You cant beat a real book! So much more engagement happens compared to reading on a device.

10.01.2022 This is such an important reminder to be kind and accepting and support others where you can. Thinking of all the wonderful, unique, talented neurodiverse kids out there. Let’s recognise and celebrate difference

10.01.2022 Not much time left... so get commenting people! These are awesome decodable readers which I highly recommend. Not only are they fantastic because they are decodable, they are Australian ; have beautiful illustrations; gorgeous, relatable characters ; and interesting, engaging storylines.

09.01.2022 Mum, Dad....Im bored. Anyone else heard this? Ive heard my fair share of this complaint these holidays. Anyone else feel like a bad parent when they hear this? Or more likely, anyone else feel pressured to solve this "problem"? The thing is, if we intervene when our kids are bored they will miss the chance to encounter and learn to manage unstructured time. We will be doing them a great disservice. It's vitally important for children to have the experience of... deciding for themselves how to use periods of unstructured time, or they'll never learn to manage it. Boredom also gives kids the opportunity and motivation to search their inner and outer worlds. It leads them to create, invent, imagine, explore. As Nancy H. Blakey said, Preempt the time spent on television and organized activities and have them spend it instead on claiming their imaginations. For in the end, that is all we have. If a thing cannot be imagined first, it cannot be. Life is bound by what we can envision. I cannot plant imagination into my children. I can, however, provide an environment where their creativity is not just another mess to clean up but welcome evidence of grappling successfully with boredom. It is possible for boredom to deliver us to our best selves, the ones that long for risk and illumination and unspeakable beauty. If we sit still long enough, we may hear the call behind boredom. With practice, we may have the imagination to rise up from the emptiness and answer.

09.01.2022 I came across this hand washing routine and thought I would share it on. Thanks A. C. Hunter Public Library I love this one... visuals and a song to make sure all those frequently forgotten areas of your childs hands get clean! (Dont forget in between the fingers and front and back of the hands) Whats your favourite hand washing song or routine? Please share! Lets keep it fun and mix it up a little for our kiddos #HandHygiene #InfectionControl #COVID-19 #flattenthecurve!

09.01.2022 I love the Floortime philosophy which is explained so well here. So often we want to be working on higher level/academic skills but if a child is not calm and feeling connected they wont be able to learn. This is especially important at the moment. Relationship is the key!

08.01.2022 It would have been hard to imagine, even a few short weeks ago, the drastic changes to our lives and routines that we would be undertaking right now. Even under the best circumstances change can bring about stress and anxiety. Heres a little reminder of the importance of self care and care of others at this time with some tips from Lifeline - https://www.lifeline.org.au//mental-health-and-wellbeing-d ... #mentalhealth #COVID-19 #caring #compassion

07.01.2022 One of the most asked questions at The Pregnancy, Babies and Childrens Expo, which I attended recently, was regarding Tongue Tie. Speech Pathology Australia has a wonderful Fact Sheet to explain the condition and help dispel the myths. You can read it here: https://www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au//Fact_Sheets.a

05.01.2022 Students need varying amounts of explicit instruction and practice to become skilled at decoding. Guided reading and predictable texts dont offer many opportunities to blend words, so students who need lots of practice fall farther and farther behind. Decoding can be hard work but we need to persevere- rewiring brains is hard work but absolutely worth it!

05.01.2022 So I was asked to share our favourites. Heres what I came up with: Catan Ticket to Ride -various versions Othello Tetrus Dual... The Game of Life 5 Second Rule Dragonwood Pandemic Hive UNO Skipbo Sleeping Queens Exploding Kittens Sushi Go (Dog Pile, Traffic Jam & IQ game are puzzle games although IQ is multi-player) Anyone have any other favourites they would recommend for kids aged between 7-16 ish? 05.01.2022 Free decodable comics! Check them out if you are after resources for your young reader. Decodable is the way to go!! Thanks so much Language and Learning

04.01.2022 When it comes to teaching reading there is only ONE way. Thanks Soundality for sharing this article. Give me a if you agree...

04.01.2022 Following on from an earlier post about what a hot topic tongue-tie seems to be for parents and carers, here is a link to new research which raises questions as to whether too many infants are getting tongue-tie and lip tether surgery (also called frenulectomy) to help improve breastfeeding, despite limited medical evidence supporting the procedure.

03.01.2022 Were camping again ...and boy did we have some excitement last night with wild weather! We had crazy storms and torrential but glorious rain How good is the rain?? Id almost forgotten what it sounded like! ...soul restoring Were so happy, we dont even mind being wet and muddy The boys certainly dont mind Anyway, wet weather means lots of time to play games together as a family. Ive written about this before but board games are the best. There are so man...y surprising or maybe not-so-surprising benefits. Besides getting the family together for some fun, board games benefit your kids brains; boost their language development; and teach them little life lessons. Theres almost too many benefits to list! For little ones these include: -identifying colours -counting spaces -holding information in their memory while they perform an action -developing hand-eye coordination and dexterity in moving pieces around the board/holding cards -learning to wait their turn -learning to follow the rules -playing cooperatively -working as a team Board games also get older kids' brains buzzing too and are especially good for developing and strengthening executive functioning skills. My boys love strategy games that are so good for practising the following skills: attending; working memory; planning/organisation, prioritisation, impulse control, flexible thinking, and emotional regulation ... after all you have to learn to stay calm if the game doesnt go to your plan and you have to learn to be a gracious winner and a good loser... These are lessons that will serve your kids far beyond the living room floor or camp site in our case #parentinglife #parenting #education #educationaltoys #speechandlanguage #languagelearning #socialthinking #connection #familytime #boardgames #boardgamenight #boardgamesofinstagram #bhfyp

02.01.2022 How do you make writing a fun, creative, enjoyable process? You use the ‘Talk for Writing’ framework of course! I have loved this approach and have found even reluctant writers willing to have a go! It’s enjoyable too as we brainstorm and talk the text together first #talkforwriting #teachingideas #writinginspiration #languagelearning #literacyislanguage

02.01.2022 Such an interesting read! I must confess I haven't read the research myself yet... but as an animal lover, I can't disagree with this at all! In fact, one of my own dogs made his first appearance in therapy recently and the motivation and engagement of the young man I was working with was substantially increased.

01.01.2022 What a year 2020 has been! Despite this, or maybe because of this... I’m filled with gratitude for so many things. I want to give a huge shout out to the wonderful kids and families with whom I have worked this year! Thank you parents and carers for entrusting your child’s therapy to me through the ups and downs of 2020. Thank you for being so flexible when circumstances and regulations were constantly changing. Thank you for being willing to learn Telehealth with me! Thank you too to the most kind and generous network of speech pathologists/speech therapists/SLPs who so graciously shared knowledge, time and resources to make this year that little bit easier! We made it! Wishing everyone a refreshing break over the holidays! See you in 2021 Foundations Speech Pathology will re-open on Monday 4th January.
