25.01.2022 We loved chatting with Canadian surf mag Nouvelle Vague about all things WOW!
24.01.2022 Sorry for the delay, we had a lot of explaining to do at the dry cleaners! Yesterday marked the start of Mental Health Month and to kick this off in style we took our board meeting to the ocean. It also marked the start of our #wowducktober campaign as we set the challenge to get in the water every day of the month. You can join us as we raise vital funds for our surf therapy programs by signing up in the link in bio. Thank you to Australian fashion label, @SABA a proud spons...or of the inaugural Ducktober campaign who supplied the stylish suits. Yes, they were a little tricky to surf in, but here at WOW we love a challenge. Join us for the month, feel the positive benefits of cold water and get webbed feet for Ducktober! https://wowducktober.raisely.com/donate : AtDusk Photography - Sydney Wedding Photographer #sabastyle Surfing NSW Man Anchor SABA
24.01.2022 Check out the new van wrap courtesy of Ink & Scratch!! If you see it cruising around Newie make sure you give us a wave
23.01.2022 In one week we'll be swapping the wetsuits for business suits to mark the start of DUCKTOBER! But it's not all fun and games, we are trying to make an important statement about how it can feel when you're living with mental health challenges. We wrote this blog last year but it still holds up, particularly in these difficult times... If you haven't already, you can still sign up for the Ducktober challenge in the link below. ... 18.01.2022 So great to catch up with one of our legendary peers in the surf therapy space! Ability Surf provide one-on-one surf therapy sessions for kids and adults with a disability in the far north NSW region. We’ll also be kicking off programs in two new locations up here, Kingsliff and Ballina. Who’s on board?? www.wowsandnsurf.com/
18.01.2022 Who is joining us for our inaugural board meeting tomorrow? Due to conditions at the Queenscliff board room, we are MOVING this event down the beach to North Steyne. Find us there suited and booted and ready for business. Remember to wear your mask and be socially distant when you're on the beach. If you're not feeling well, please chuck a sickie and stay at home! Yewwww!
18.01.2022 We're working on something that gets to the *core* of mental health.... Watch this space! #ComingSoonInJune
18.01.2022 Calling all Bondi Vets. No, not the Dr Chris Brown types. We are recruiting for our first ever Veterans program happening in Bondi this October. If you are a current or former serving Veteran, or if you have a family/partner connection, we want you to come along (please note you must be aged 18+). You'll be learning how to surf, but we guarantee it's so much more than that. Programs like this help Veterans and their families deal with the social isolation and mental health is...sues that they face during and long after service. To register your interest in this free program, please email the Association of Veteran Surfers at [email protected]. Photo by Warwick Eady from our last Veterans program in Newcastle. 18.01.2022 Yesterday we were stoked to launch the new Surfing Mental Health 360 program together with Surfing NSW, and mental health orgs Thegoodhumanfactory, batyr, Man Anchor and Rise Foundation Australia. It coincided with R U OK? Day in Australia, which couldn't have been more poignant and fitting. Surfing Mental Health 360 is a surf community-driven program connecting boardriders clubs, surf schools and high schools in regional communities affected by drought, bushfires and Covid...-19. As part of the program we will all work together through surfing with a holistic view to create awareness and provide ongoing referrals and support pathways. Big ups to the Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor who was there to officially launch the initiative at Maroubra Beach. As we like to say here at WOW, go far, go together! Stay tuned for more....
17.01.2022 It's official, October will be known as Ducktober as take to the water to raise awareness for Mental Health Month. We'll be getting in the cold water every day for a month and we challenge you to do the same, whether it's the ocean, a pool or a one-minute cold shower. But what the duck... why ducks? Well, apart from the obvious, ducks love water, ducks paddle together in packs (they are social animals just like us), we also like to think of ducks as a metaphor for our mental... health. Think about this. Above the surface, a duck is chilled, smiling, gliding along smoothly. But below the surface, he's kicking like hell. To us, this is symbolic of someone who is dealing with mental health challenges. On the surface they might appear fine but underneath they are struggling and no one can see it. During Ducktober, as we get into the water, we will aim to bring our struggles above the water to help normalise them. No hiding. Join us and be like a duck out of water! More to come, watch this quacking space....
16.01.2022 Today our feed has been a sea of yellow and we are so proud that so many people have gotten behind RUOK? Day. It’s not too late to check in on your friends and family. A simple question can change a life.
16.01.2022 It's time to get quacking!! Ducktober is fast approaching and we are thrilled to announce that we will run two competitions to get your little webbed feet going: Ticketek Australia will donate a $250 voucher into the draw for anyone who signs up by Wednesday 30 September. PLUS... We have two night’s accommodation at Mantra The Observatory in Port Macquarie, NSW (valued at over $500) in the draw for anyone who reaches $500+ in their fundraising. You can sign up here: https://wowducktober.raisely.com/ The Ducktober challenge to immerse in water every day of the month from Thursday 1 to Saturday 31 October. By pledging to surf, swim or even take a 1-min cold shower, we aim to raise awareness of mental health in our own circles, receive the positive effects of being in cold water, whilst raising much needed funds for our surf therapy programs, to reach more lives, and help more communities, across Australia. GOOD LUCK and get quacking!

07.01.2022 Has COVID-19 wiped you out? Has it affected your employment, wellbeing or outlook on life? We recognise that 2020 has been pretty challenging for many of us - but the good thing is you're not alone. WOW has teamed up with Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation to offer a free learn to surf and wellbeing program for #Newcastle adults impacted by COVID-19 (this is the first group of its kind!). By using surfing as a tool for coping, connection, and healing we can come togeth...er to help turn things around. As they say, life happens in waves. 03.01.2022 Thank you for your support!! We have our suits pressed and ready for tomorrow’s duck dive into the ocean
03.01.2022 Picture this: you're paddling out into a foggy surf break early in the morning, thinking you are all alone with no one to guide you or help you get through the waves. But then you make it out the back, the fog clears and you realise there are lots of people around you. We use this metaphor at WOW to describe those feelings of being alone when it comes to your own mental health challenges. It can sometimes feel like there's thick fog all around you with no light to see clearly.... Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and as always, we aim to encourage connections with others and recognise the role this plays in preventing suicide. If you feel like there is no one around who you can talk to, Lifeline provides Aussies access to 24 hour crisis support and suicide prevention services, by calling 13 11 14. You can also text 0477131114 (6pm-midnight) for a confidential chat with a Lifeline crisis support person. Today is also RUOK? Day. We're big supporters of R U OK Day, and their essential steps in supporting the people around us through difficult times. If you're concerned about someone you know, start by asking if they are OK. Don’t worry if you don’t quite know what to say - just by being supportive and listening, you’re helping to make a difference. ALEC - Ask, Listen, Encourage action and Check in. A conversation can help someone see through the fog - and it might just save a life. : @highintheskyphotography .
