24.01.2022 Teff & Synephrine update- It has been hard to find a lab to get hay tested, most can’t test for synephrine, we have found one, however it would take a fair bit ...of time to set up and perform the test because it is not something that they test often. As members of the Australian Fodder Industry Association, they have also been assisting us with enquiries it has been established that Racing NSW is best placed to complete these tests. The good news is Racing NSW is currently performing some more tests on teff samples, additionally they have agreed to test samples from a range of Victorian growers. Results should be available within the coming weeks. See more

13.01.2022 TEFFGATE - a frustrating update Further samples of teff hay have been tested by the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory and have come back positive for syneph...rine, and the official advice for competition horses is still to avoid the hay :( However, Racing NSW has refused to answer any questions about the samples (how much synephrine, where are they from, are they from different properties etc etc), or if there is anyway we can send independent blood samples of horses consuming teff hay to be tested etc. Very unhelpful and means this story is still not settled! (Thanks Better Health & Nutrition for Your Dressage Horse or Pony for passing on the information). Teff hay is still an excellent, low sugar but nutritious hay for any one who is not in official competitions, and a great drought tolerant crop for our weary farmers to boot. If you have a horse or pony that eats teff hay and has been swabbed with a negative result please get in touch - I'd love to hear from you :)

13.01.2022 If the rainy weather spoiled your plans to come to my talk last night at the Galston Equestrian Club, I've put up my presentation slides. No audio unfortunately, but the major points should come across :) Get in touch if you have any questions or need advice!

09.01.2022 Hot off the press! New study on Teff (no, not about synephrine ;) ) Highlights Teff consistently had higher fiber and lower digestible energy values. Horses g...razing teff had a tendency for a lower insulinemic response in the fall. Teff has potential to be used as alternative forage for overweight horses It's unfortunate that the cool season grass that was compared with teff in this study was actually not as high in sugars/starch as they often can be, which meant less obvious differences. But it's great to see more work done on this species - the more we know the better we can help our horses :) https://www.j-evs.com/article/S0737-0806(18)30082-0/abstract

05.01.2022 Teff hay & synephrine - the plot thickens! As yet I haven't had a response from the relevant authorities regarding this issue and the questions we all have, but... I thought I would share what I have found out today. First of all - there is absolutely no evidence that feeding Teff hay is harmful, or will make you horse excitable or "adrenalised" as is being suggested by some. There is no reason to stop feeding Teff for health reasons - and a great many good reasons to feed it! Synephrine is a naturally occurring plant compound, found mostly in citrus species, but also in the common rush grass. In concentrated forms it has been used in weight loss/energy boosting supplements for humans (no evidence that they work) and medically for raising blood pressure by vasoconstriction. If you eat marmalade, eat oranges, or drink orange juice, you have consumed synephrine! Even IF Teff hay was found to contain some level of synephrine, it is highly unlikely to be found at high enough levels to cause problems (just like we can eat marmalade). For those concerned about positive swabs. The warning by Racing NSW may be based only one sample of Teff hay, and there are suggestions that it may have been contaminated with other grasses and weeds (possibly common rush). As a scientific, evidence-based professional, this is in no way definitive and not enough to tarnish all Teff hay with the same brush. Further testing needs to be conducted before any conclusions can be made. Teff growers are trying to find independent laboratories where this can be done. Additionally, a bit of a google search reveals that this situation has occurred before - with a harness racing horse testing positive for synephrine traced back to feed, in that case it was thought to be contaminated lucerne and the charged was dropped, with no warning against feeding lucerne. Teff hay is a healthy and appropriate forage for horses, and it's great that more and more farmers are growing it - we need to encourage this, so please do not be put off by this (especially if you are not concerned about positive swabs)! Hopefully we will have more answers soon.
