01.01.2022 Saturday would normally have been the night that the Salvos head to North Gong and hand out water and chat with those at the Pub Crawl. This year we couldn't do that but we still need to raise much needed funds for The Salvation Army's First Floor Program. If you would like to donate please click on the link below to donate. We thought today you might like to hear how The Salvation Army's First Floor Program commenced in the Illawarra.... While The Salvation Army’s Jayne Wilson was on a hospital bed undergoing chemotherapy for her cancer, she saved someone’s life. It’s an example of how Jayne, who died of cancer in Wollongong Hospital on Christmas afternoon 2013, would happily give her time to help others, whether it be through her work with The Salvation Army in Wollongong, as the police chaplain for Lake Illawarra or as a celebrant. One day in August 2012, when she was about to start a session of chemotherapy, she received a call on her mobile phone from a woman on Bulli Tops who was contemplating taking her own life. While having treatment to try and save her own life, Jayne stayed on the phone. She encouraged the woman back her car away from the edge of the cliff and then arranged for the woman to contact The First Floor Program who could help her. With a hospitality background, Jayne first joined The Salvation Army shortly after it moved into the old Cleo’s Nightclub in Burelli Street, Wollongong. There was a working bistro and kitchen there and Jayne came on board to run hospitality training for long-term unemployed people. She noticed that many participants had addiction issues and soon started a counselling service to help them but she didn’t stop there. Jayne also noticed that though there was a lot of assistance for people with addiction issues, there was little for their families. What was initiated was quite new at the time. Jayne commenced support programs for the partners and parents of people with drug and alcohol and/or mental health issues, for their children and for grandparents who are primary carers of their grandchildren. Known as the First Floor Program, this holistic model of care has since been replicated by The Salvation Army in Sydney, Canberra and Canada. https://community.salvationarmy.org.au/t/santa-fest
