21.01.2022 Are you doing what you love It's nuts not to Whatever brings you alive is what you should do more of. Coach @tanyarobinson.socialworker and I are today training in #hobart : active listening. We both love growing community workers expertise and we LOVE Tasmania.... We LOVE what we do. We LOVE travelling. We LOVE connecting with new people . Are you doing what you love. What is it that you really want to do? How can we help you make it happen?
21.01.2022 I'm quite interested to know what the best business advise you ever received is. Will you share it below for us all, please?. The business advise that resonated strongly with me is a #napoleanhill quote: Plan your work and work your plan .... I know from experience that telling someone to do a business plan is melt-down material. It is a HUGE job . But, having a system where you plan your work and work your plan is a little more palatable. My plan consists of answers to multiple 5 W's and a How question:. What... Why... Who... When... What... How... The plan then becomes my boss, my KPI driver, and I work it so I can stay on track. But you: drop below the best business advise you received that changed things for you?.
20.01.2022 Have you ever changed your mind because of something positive someone else said to you?. I despised a certain person until all six of the kids said positive things about him. They all liked him.... I second guessed myself by thinking that perhaps my assessment of him was wrong. We have now been very happily married for 13 years . Often we make decisions based on our current mood ( my mood was #manhater ). It may be more beneficial to make a wise mind decision and to leave room for changing your mind. Positive input from those you love can be persuasive, and in my case, thank God it was. Getting back to you dudes though, have you ever changed your mind because of something positive someone else said to you?.
18.01.2022 Join the peer conversation about non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI): cutting, hitting, bingeing, scratching, burning, interfering with wound healing, etc. This week it is hosted by Kelly Voyka and supported by Mellanie Fury as I have another meeting to attend. Share, learn, network. You can share the link to your social science colleagues. We are a peer supervision forum open to anyone working in the sector, NOT just social workers and not just in our region. Last week we had fo...ur states represented. Here's the link for 7pm this Thursday evening: https://jcu.zoom.us/j/88447893089
18.01.2022 In a spectacular part of the world lies a dream job for a Social Worker. I'll come visit.
17.01.2022 The social services sector is full of jargon acronyms. My favourite is STD. What is it? There's also a few fave follow-ups: OCD - obsessive compulsive disorder... TIC - trauma informed care PD - personality disorders FPS - focused psychological strategy. But MY favourite, STD, stands for sexually transmitted debt. If you were thinking it was a sexually transmitted disease, that is old language. Sexually transmitted visitors are infections rather than diseases so the common jargon for that is STI. Your turn. Drop below any jargon from your field that you like the sound of or tickles your fancy. PS: one from the medical sector that I find curious is DOA - dead on arrival. It means one thing on earth but another thing when you meet your maker
16.01.2022 Agree? "We’re done with the emotional labor of carrying men who refuse to wake up and show up." I agree with this #Repost from @awakeningwomensupport ...We’re done with the emotional labor of carrying men who refuse to wake up and show up. Awakening women who do the work (read stacks of books, listen to a plethora of podcasts, take courses and programs and more to grow and evolve themselves) will agree...... One of the things they want more than anything within the relationship is for their partner to show up and do the f*cking work along with them to build a healthy and fulfilling relationship. We’re done with the emotional labor of carrying men who refuse to wake up and show up. No more settling for emotionally stunted men who refuse to grow and change. As we awaken, do the inner work and evolve we will naturally require more from our partners (and others in our life) and if they can’t deliver they’ll no longer hold VIP tickets in our lives. Agree? Disagree? Share your thoughts in the comments

12.01.2022 What if investing in your community by depositing good paid huge dividends? Imagine there was a financial value placed on the natural helping you already do in your community: mowing a neighbours lawn, ringing / visiting a lonley person, selling tickets for the P&C. Just like a financial investment this type of community investment is a form of capital: social capital.... Social capital allows a group of people to work together effectively to achieve a common purpose or goal. It allows a community or organization, such as a corporation or a nonprofit, to function together as a whole through trust and shared identity, norms, values, and mutual relationships. I invest heavily in my community through my involvement in local groups, sharing my knowledge and skill, helping where I can and shopping locally. That investment of social capital has paid huge dividends: social capital returns to me constantly with offers of help, information, discounts, friendships, support, invitations, the list goes on. Next time you cannot be bothered checking on your neighbour, going to a local group meeting, visiting a friend in hospital, reframe it as an investment in social capital. For social capital to grow, there has to be regular deposits. What will you deposit today? What if investing in your community by depositing good paid huge dividends Would you do more of it? Answer below .
11.01.2022 Juggling time as a private practitioner was a nightmare! I found a solution that fixed it 'cause ain't nobody got time for no time!. When with clients my phone is off. When training my phone is off. When returning calls incoming calls go to voicemail.. I was stuck in a never ending loop of returning calls and that is not my idea of fun! .... Acuity, an online booking system solved that. Instead of several two-way phonecalls to book appointments, clients now use my online booking system. 3 I have three different diaries they can book into (free 1/2 hr, 1 hour supervision or coaching, 1/2 hr personal chat) and I can block out time for myself. Clients even change their appointments online . It cut down my return phone time drastically and gave me focused time back. It is a time management saviour It integrates to Zoom and automatically sends the Zoom link, and speaks to my Outlook and Google calendars too . I am in love with it like I am in love with my round automatic vacuum cleaner Anything that makes life easier and saves time is my friend. If returning calls as a solo business owner is a time management issue for you too, drop me a below so I know I'm not alone .
11.01.2022 We made it to #tasmania . When in Tasmania, drink like the Romans. Local Gin & Vodka. Cheers until tomorrow.
10.01.2022 Client testimonial comes in different weights: the longer the relationship the worth-heavier their words. My business is a funny one: the conversations I have can be: Confronting as I hold people accountable... Upsetting as we together peel the emotional onion Directive as I redirect, correct or realign values. This can alter feedback negatively...and result in short term clients . But, long termers, and I have many that I have worked with for over 5 years, provide weighted truth . "I have been seeing Megan as a professional supervisor for exactly 6 years now. Her advice and guidance came at a time when I was struggling with a number of personal and professional challenges. Working in the social service sector is not for the faint hearted, having someone who both understands the landscape, and the trauma that can accompany what we witness and experience on a daily basis makes the work she does unique... Megan isn’t afraid to give it to you straight if you need to hear it, but at the same time, give you the positive push that can lead to so many ‘ah ha!’ moments... The impact Megan has had on me; her situational re-framing, the strategies/models she has shared with me, I continue to apply in many areas of my life. She is truly an inspiration on so many levels, and is someone whom I respect and admire wholeheartedly." I LOVE and have a deep respect for all my supervisees. My long termers though: they have become as influnencial to me as me to them . Salute to all your long termers: join me in a toast below as we recognise the weight of testimony from long term clients. Here's to them .
10.01.2022 Fail your way forward. Mistakes and failures are learning experiences not the end. I am a failure at so many things. But, I have fantastic experience and sagacity as a result...and a wealth of data to share in my story telling . Did you know that I got on a live telecast TEDx stage with my pants down? ... Yep. Total fail I went for a nervous pee immediately before my stage call and forgot to pull my "suck-your-gut-in" pantihose up . Yep. Me. Shame. FAIL It is clear to see when you look around my hips . Live telecast. Internationally. I could have hidden in shame or refused to ever talk about it. Instead, once I was over the embarrassment I decided to use it as data for guest speaking . I failed my way forward by turning a big business and career failure into a funny experience . Watch the talk (15mins) and see how damn obvious it is when you know what to look for. Toward the end you can clearly see it . But, I did a TEDx talk about my passion and I'm okay with that . Watch my greatest fail here: https://youtu.be/VXLuqNtQXFA.
09.01.2022 Do you know the back story of my greatest influencer, Mary Poppins? It's sad . Mary's creator was Pamela Travers, a young Australian women. A survivor of childhood neglect this is the life story that developed Mary Poppins as my child protection guru: Born Helen Goff, in Maryborough, QLD, Australia in 1899, the celebrated author of Mary Poppins was the daughter of a bank manager who drank himself to death by the time Helen was 7.... Helen's histrionic mother, Margaret, dithered on for a few more years before also giving up on life and attempting suicide in a local river. On a thundery night, Margaret Goff announced to her 3 children that she was off to kill herself. Helen, the oldest (age 10) was terrified. She was left, alone, to settle her younger siblings She put them to bed on the lounge room floor. To divert attention from frantic thoughts around their mother's impending violent death, Helen made up fantasy stories about magical flying horses in faraway lands that would ride them all to safety . Margaret returned, unsuccessful in her suicide attempt. Helen withdrew from the hurt caused by her family & instead found solace in the strength of a spinster aunt . Helen's dysfunctional family predicament haunted her for the rest of her life. She was never able to rid herself of images concerning the appalling fate of children whose parents were unable to care for them. At 21 years of age, Helen changed her name to Pamela L. Travers. At age 25, she moved to London to make a new life as a writer. She never married, wore trousers when she wanted, had an affair with an older married man and eventually entered into a long-term relationship with another woman. Ever desperate to protect children, at age 40, she adopted and raised an Irish orphan. It was Walt Disney who rewrote Mary Poppins as a screen play & the personification of Mary Poppins as the all rounded protector of children. Disney's movie made Mary Poppins synonymous with love & magic, whereas Pamela had meant for Mary to be synonymous with neglect and rejection. If Pamela Travers could break the chains that bound, so can you. Who/what influenced you and why?
08.01.2022 Have you got tools that you are attached to? Tools that you cannot live without?. Apart from my deep love for hard cover coloured journals (because I am old fashioned and still keep colour coordinated hand written notes), I am sooooo embarrassed to admit to my 'best tool' love because then you'll know what a total tool I am! My love for colourful journals is functional, except for the time I spend in stationary shops like @kikki.k .... Put your pen holding fingers up if you know what I mean . My biggest and cannot do without office tool though is [shame job] .... my little round automatic vacuum cleaner that I bought from my local Post Office. I love her. She is called, "my wife". 2 I use her twice a day and she has been a cost effective time saver for me So, go ahead, now that you know what a tool I am, do share your 'best tool' below ...and I want to hear from all you stationary shop lovers too .
07.01.2022 Are you surrounded by great business folk? Have you told them what they mean to you?. I received a personal reference from @farmgateflowerstasmania on my Facebook wall. I cried with happiness . This is what she said :.... "I discovered Megan Bayliss via an interview she gave with Junkies magazine and found her page on her social media. We bonded over our love of vintage, recycling, craft, penny pinching and completely inappropriate language. We stalked each other’s pages, sent relevant articles and compared notes on personal & professional development books, courses & people we followed. We have known each other for 6 or so years and I have LOVED our friendship. It’s been Megan’s constant voice of reason which included a definite long distance put on your big girls pants and so bloody what, it’s the same story as a million other women plus extra help with parenting, being married and running several businesses... some useful informations and some nonsensical always at exactly the right time!. Our birthdays are close enough together to be able to celebrate for an entire week and it’s been a lot of fun. Progressive dinners, ghost sleep overs, op shop runs, vintage drooling and sandstone licking have all been the best fun because we were together. Megan, you have stretched my thinking so far I thought I may smack myself out on the way back through, but I am forever thankful for the time and effort you have invested into our friendship. Without you there would be no Farm Gate Flowers videos, or Great Barrier Reef swimming with Nemo, theatre performances or dumpling dinners in Melbourne. You are responsible for so many of my recent life highlights and I am forever grateful for you!" ~. This evoked strong emotions from me: to be recognised and loved like that is POWERFUL . Why don't you follow the lead of the amazingly compassionate @farmgateflowerstasmania & call out a business buddy you love. Don't wait till they're dead to give their obituary. Go ahead, call them out now.
02.01.2022 No time for anything? Common hurdle for family people; Multi tasking, juggling, going without. Sound familiar? . Here's a remedy: Collapse time .... Do everyday tasks in YOUR time frame to make life work for you. Wash at 11pm, have breakfast at morning tea time, take the dog for a walk by torch light, order groceries online at 5am. Many people are totally invested in performing duties in the time frames the majority does. But, the majority do not have your unique set of needs & it's okay for you to do things differently. We each have the same 24 hrs in a day & how we use them is up to you. If you have to collapse the traditional time frames to get jobs done then do it. Live the way it suits your needs best. Nobody says that you have to have breakfast at 7am. Goodness, in the car on the way just makes so much sense. Keep Up & Go or breakfast bars in the car so it's one less job to do in the morning. A bowlful of frozen peas is a great summer snack that needs no preparation time. If breakfast cereal for dinner & overnight slow cooked lamb shanks for breakfast is a time collapse for you & creates a more functional use of your day then do it. You are in charge of your time & life. Get more time for you by collapsing traditional time frames & designing time to suit your needs. Can I have a Hallelujah if you know what I'm talking about
