25.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + OzHelp Tasmania Trainer/Mentor & Coach (and talented writer), Tracey Groombridge. What do you think will be the three most important skills to have when entering the creative industries in the near future?... Emotional intelligence, self-awareness and confidence in the work they do: - Employers are no longer looking for the person who is the most talented and supremely technically good, they are instead looking for people who are self-aware who are able to learn and teach others with wisdom and understanding. Adaptability and adjustment skills: - As COVID-19 has shown us those who adapt faster and easier area able to ride out the big waves of change better. There will always be change, but those that adjust and make it work for them will find a way through. An ability to translate complicated topics and issues so that they are relevant and understandable by the wider community, whether this be through art or other creative forms.

24.01.2022 Student Work Showcase - Alyssa Hibberd Alyssa produced this full colour editorial illustration as part of a recent assessment for Digital Design. Snippet from the assessment brief: ... You need to select one of three articles produced for The Guardian and reimagine them to be more in touch with the original content. Once you have selected your chosen stories, read/listen to it and take notes/draw thumbnails in your journal - ideating on what your illustration could entail. You should then research digital illustration styles and trends you think would compliment your chosen article, and select a style you would like to emulate. Try to choose a style/method you haven't used before. This will expand your illustration offering and technique.

20.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Freelance Designer - Exhibition/Interior/Branded Space/3D Visualisation, Andrew Jones. Why do you feel Tasmania has the opportunity to be the epicentre of the creative industries in Australia?... Tasmania has a unique opportunity to be the epicentre of creative industries in Australia. It has always had people who are tenacious in exploring new mediums and now able to capitalise a brand renowned for quality and originality. We have an amazing balance of natural and metropolitan surroundings which I believe is conducive to creativity and the envy of many. Check out Andrew's recent projects below.

Lucinda was dropped into a team of 15 people - with different backgrounds, industries and experiences. It was then over to the team to develop and pitch a solution. The topic:... How might we creatively embed technology to deliver more sustainable organisations, practices and communities? (With a strong focus on the creative fields.) Check out the proposed solution from Lucinda and her team below.

18.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Director, Camera Operator & Producer, Lara van Raay. What is your dream for the creative industries in Australia?... Pretty straight forward - funding. Funding and more funding so that creators can have the freedom to create. My dream would be to have a deeply well funded creative sector that is respected and valued as the vital service that it is in terms of well being and cultural value. I would love to see a flourishing media sector with Australian content given priority (like they do in France or Ireland) with a population that cherishes and demands to see its own people, voices and stories shown back to them. What do you think will be the three most important skills to have when entering the creative industries in the near future? Adaptability - being able to handle new situations, new technologies and an ever-changing world (in terms of expectations, social norms and technology) will be essential. This means keeping a fluid way of working and not getting locked into any set ways. Being agile in your thinking and being able to manage change fatigue is vital as well - as there's one thing for sure that the future holds - change.

17.01.2022 Foundry Alumni Profile - Lucas Grenda, 2018 Graduate We recently checked in with Lucas - one of our first ever Foundry grads to see what he was up to after completing his Associate Degree of Applied Design. Check out what he's up to! What does life after Foundry look like?... "I am currently the lead graphic designer at Fingerprint Signs, and I have been employed since before my graduation at Foundry. I'm in charge of most of the visual aspects of the work that we put out here at this family run and 100% Tasmanian owned business. I am lucky to be under the wings of this team as they guide and grow me to be an ever better designer than before! As for the future? Who knows! Keep an eye out!" Tell us what your learning experience at Foundry was like. "Foundry is a completely different learning experience to anything you have experienced before. On one hand it is casual and comfortable, and on the other it is informative and deeply educational. I enjoyed my time on campus learning with like minded individuals and gaining tips and tricks with each new conversation I struck up." Congrats, Lucas! We're super proud of you

15.01.2022 Our Interior Design students are currently diving into Temporary Installations, and have been working on a fictitious brief (based on real-world trends + demands) to develop a pop-up event installation for Reebok Australia. Check out how current student, Frances Roberts is progressing with her design. "I wanted to create an experience which was exciting, engaging, educational and environmental. The large glass windows in my design generate excitement by showcasing customers trying on shoes, meanwhile, engagement and education are achieved through a large audio-visual display at the heart of the installation. Environmental objectives are achieved through the use of recycled materials such as old shipping containers, repurposed timber panelling, and biodegradable algae decor details."

13.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Digital Artist & Owner of TURNERvfx, Rich Turner. What is your dream for the creative industries in Australia?... Easy! I would love to see areas or pockets of different industries in one or two locations that work as a co-operative. This is something I have witnessed with several large world class post production studios in Soho, London. They don't fight for work, but share work and engage each other to handle different parts of a huge project, ensuring the community is thriving and everyone gets a slice of the pie.

12.01.2022 Student Work Showcase - Taima Learmont. Film + Photography student, Taima showcases her ability to manipulate light + movement with these stunning shots. We asked Taima what key skills she has learnt so far during her Foundry journey ... "Being able to take feedback and use it to my highest advantage! I have found that even if you are confident with your work, getting someone else's eyes on it will help you see things that you have potentially missed and improve your work to the best of your abilities. "Communicating - whether it's to my class or a bunch of people I don't know, my ability to communicate has improved bucket loads and has given me the confidence to be able to show my worth in the industry. "And finally, I have learnt to never second guess. This was something I struggled with when I started, especially when it came to classes out of my comfort zone. But as I've gone through these experiences, I have found that even if you aren't confident in a piece, someone out there (a client) is loving it. And that's all that matters. Having someone be confident in you is sometimes all you need to realise the positive impact that you have created."

08.01.2022 Our previous Foundry LIVE guest presents - Di + Robert Elderton of Future Days recently released the packaging designs for Mitchelton Wines with quite a contemporary approach given they and the rest of Victoria were in lockdown. The approach? Create an entirely virtual environment! Check out how they pulled it off. "When the first COVID-19 lockdown hit Melbourne, we were in the midst of finalising location shoots for three new Mitchelton Luxury Collection packaging projects.... "Our solution was to build three environments with terrain and landscape generator software and shoot each bottle in a virtual environment. The software allows us to transform, erode, sculpt and paint each environment in real-time entirely on the GPU. "Inspired by conversations around 'how do we shoot on location', we had previously been having during lockdown, the images offer a glimpse of a potential alternate narrative when access to physical environments are excluded from a brand's visual assets." 01.01.2022 Foundry Discussion Series The Future of the Creative Industries - Featuring Foundry Teacher + Commercial and Documentary Photographer, Devaka Seneviratne (Dave). Why do you feel Tasmania has the opportunity to be the epicentre of the creative industries in Australia?... I'm brand new to Tasmania (and Australia) but one thing I noticed literally from the day I got here was a strong sense of design that extends to even the more mundane things; public facilities, bridges, pedestrian walkways to name a few. I have travelled a fair bit and I can safely say that it is a very cool place to be in. There is lots of inspiration in the fantastic landscapes, beautiful buildings both old and new, access to nature in her raw beauty and a strong sense of community and pride. It's a perfect melting pot of creativity, art and ideas and I think Tasmania can definitely position itself as an epicentre of design and other creative industries. Check out some of Dave's work in Sri Lanka and the Indian subcontinent below.
