23.01.2022 A few smouches for your Sunday folks.
20.01.2022 This is a great list. And a perfect example of why word histories are so fascinating. 6. Fathom: This verb meaning moved from to encircle with one’s arms to meaning to understand after much thought. How? "One’s outstretched arms can be used as a measurement (a fathom), and once you have fathoms, you can use a fathom line to measure the depth of water. Think metaphorically and fathoming becomes about getting to the bottom of things."
19.01.2022 This word of the week is from the US but like all the other problems they have right now, Australia is just looking in a mirror that magnifies the same problems that exist here on our own scale.

12.01.2022 Mac announced their 2017 Word of the Year. Have your say in the peoples vote from their shortlist. I'm leaning towards 'endling' for relevance and poetry.

10.01.2022 Kwaussie kwaussie kwaussie... the Australian National Dictionary's Word of the Year...just doesn't quite have the same ring to it. *Kozzi* on the other hand falls a little more kindly on the ear and on my logic receptors.

05.01.2022 Ghost words; the words that were never words...or were they?
03.01.2022 I remember reading about the removal (of these nature words) with a sinking heart. The metaphor was unmissable. But there is hope: Remember our words and our love for the natural world, then let that momentum roll baby! Thanks to Seed Vault for original share.

01.01.2022 Ahoy! I'm on a boat and without my dictionaries for a couple of weeks. Around boats I always look for favourite names and my friend (and previous sail buddy) Juba suggested a write up our own....so, our charter boat: Named after the Mango Tango cocktail and which we have affectionately shortened to the ManTan. Mango is from the Portuguese 'manga'; the switch to 'o' from 'a' remains unclear but I suspect it was to help it rhyme with tango in early Cocktailese.... Tango hotfooted it's way into English in 1913 when the dance became popular in Britain and America. Before the Argentine Spanish 'tango' referred to the syncopated ballroom dance, it named an African-South American drum dance, probably courtesy of a Niger-Congo language. #12daymantan #mangotango #boatnames
