We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in this huge mission to #FreeKaavan : The Pakistani people who have never given up the calls to #FreeKaavan, US-Superstar Cher who has fought for years with her NGO Free The Wild for the relocation of Kaavan and is also on-site today to cheer for him. 24.01.2022 A look back at our major rescue stories. Can you imagine what it's like never having had a bath in your whole life? For dogs Sor and Pich, whom we encountered during our mission on Silk Island #cambodia, that was the reality. They looked more like two balls of (very dirty) fur when we picked them up. It took us a while to scrub all the dust off but when we were done, we looked into the eyes of two beautiful dogs - and at thousands of lice and fleas. We continued the trea...tment and also took care of the severe skin infections both dogs suffered from. Thanks to your support and our partner Animal Rescue Cambodia, Sor and Pich are doing well and enjoy their life on Silk Island. 24.01.2022 #BeforeAfter: The story of Vesko One year has passed since bear Vesko was rescued and transferred to Dancing Bears Park Belitsa , which is run in cooperation with Fondation Brigitte Bardot . Upon his arrival, he was very stressed and showed strong stereotypical behaviour. Nowadays, he is able to enjoy the sun and natural surroundings in his new home. Over the last year, he also made a new friend the female bear Rada whom he shares an enclosure with. Vesko was born in 201...0, as a victim of uncontrolled breeding, at Varna zoo in Bulgaria. Varna zoo was not able to provide species-appropriate living conditions for him. This resulted in a decision to move him to a zoo abroad when he was one year old with a stop at Sofia zoo. Once there, Vesko did not continue his journey for unknown reasons. While looking for other accommodation, Sofia zoo found that no other zoo was interested to take over the bear. Time passed and due to health issues, he spent the next eight years in a quarantine zone at Sofia zoo until we could rescue him. Today, he has transformed into a beautiful and playful bear who enjoys his new life to the fullest. 23.01.2022 Last night, the loneliest elephant in the world landed in Cambodia! Together with the team, Dr Frank Goeritz and Dr Amir Khalil were right by his side throughout the whole trip: Kaavan was eating, was not stressed and he even slept a little bit whilst leaning on the wall of the crate! He behaves like a ‘Frequent Flyer’. The flight was uneventful, which is all you can ask for when you transfer an elephant! Our partner NGO @FTWGlobal and US-superstar @cher were waiting for th...e elephant in Cambodia. Moving this big boy from Pakistan to Cambodia was logistically challenging and was the hardest rescue ever for us. This plane ride would never have happened without the trust and support of American Businessman, Eric Margolis. Watch his first steps It was already dark and difficult to see, but we still want to make sure you are a part of this milestone Kaavan stepping foot into the sanctuary in Cambodia for the first time. After a long journey from Pakistan, he was now able to leave his transport crate and enjoyed a warm welcome with a juicy fruitcake and a banana tree leaves trail made especially for him. Why is this necessary? Big cats in the wild would be naturally busy hunting, whereas our big cats do not hunt or roam through home ranges of several square kilometres to gather food. Moreover, enrichment methods stimulate the expression of species-specific behaviour and help rescued animals to gain tru...st in the environment they are living in and self-confidence in their skills. In a nutshell, the aim of enrichments is to create conditions that are reminiscent of life in the wild to promote their natural behaviour. 23.01.2022 #UPDATE Cat slaughterhouse closure We went back for another visit last week and arrived while the restaurant was busy with customers. First thing we had to witness was a butchered cat on the table that was being prepared for a hot pot. The cat's hair had been singed with a blowtorch. Even though customers were enjoying their meals, there was a sense of terror in the air. In the nearby slaughterhouse, these animals had died a horrible death. During our visit, four new cat...s were delivered in a cage on the back of a motorbike. Most were wearing collars, a clear sign that these were pets stolen from their families. All of them were very young and looked at us with terrified eyes. We refused to leave before ensuring that no harm would be done to them. We sat down with the owner - and while continuing our talks of shutting this place down, we specifically asked him to make sure the cats that had just arrived would not be harmed. Fortunately, he agreed to it, as he is eager to get out of this horrible business. The rescue preparations took us some time, and then when the rescue finally seemed in sight it was put on hold due to the bad weather conditions and typhoon in Vietnam. She was very curious to see this new installation as her first few days of training involved a temporary crate. Now, we hope Suzie will get used to her new transport crate. Our goal is for Suzie to enter the crate calmly, reducing the amount of stress and therefore, not needing to be sedated for the transport. 19.01.2022 #UPDATE Emergency vet check for bear Xuan Xuan, like most former bile bears, suffers from multiple diseases and due to his extremely difficult past, he is struggling with severe behavioral abnormalities. The animal caretakers have been intensively working with him for the past weeks as it is very difficult to get him to take his medication. Last week, the onsite team noticed that Xuan had significantly deteriorated ! We immediately examined him under anaesthesia. ... His already diagnosed ailments had worsened, and he also developed pancreatitis and gastritis. Sadly, all these conditions are extremely painful . His treatment plan is focused on controlling pain, inflammation and infection, but also, when and if needed, with the help of behavioural medications, we will try to make him less stressed and scared. He spent the next few days in the allocated area for hospitalised patients in our veterinary clinic at BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh, for close monitoring and further treatment. Unfortunately Xuan is one of many rescued animals who had to endure years of trauma, leaving not only physical but also psychological scars. When these animals are rescued and brought to a safe and suitable place, they might not immediately understand or recognise that their horrible past is behind them. A successful rescue itself often signals the start of our work, not the end! The way to recovery for Xuan will be long, but we will be next to him 24/7 . 16.01.2022 #CUTE update from the Bear Cub Trio of Ninh Binh! The three cutest little bear cubs - Mochi, Nara and Nikko are thriving in our care at BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh. Every day they play, eat and nap together. It is amazing to see how they have grown since being rescued as tiny cubs! Their favourite snacks include lots of veggies, eggs, apples, and peanuts. Funnily, Mochi does not seem to like peanuts but loves peanut butter! ... These three bear cubs were rescued from wildlife traffickers towards a very dark fate and are now safe for the rest of their lives. 15.01.2022 We have been counting down to this moment and dreaming of it for so long and to finally see Kaavan transported out of [the Islamabad] zoo will remain with us forever. - Cher, singing superstar who has written songs calling for Kaavan to be rescued from his grim and lonely conditions at Marghazar Zoo. What a moment! Kaavan is currently on a 10 hour flight to Cambodia's airport before a further five-hour truck journey to the city of Siem Reap, where the elephant sanctuary..., his new home, is located. Kaavan's caretakers are bringing more than 200 kilograms of food including bananas and melons for him to munch on during the journey. In #Bali, there is a lot of excitement among the local children when our #CansofKindness feeding team comes to their hometown. When they know we are coming, the children and their dogs run and follow our car. Their energy makes our team so enthusiastic to visit them! What’s more, the local street dogs, who are usually shy of humans, will happily come up to our feeding team, tails wagging and... ready for a meal. 13.01.2022 Happy news from BÄRENWALD Müritz! With spring in the air, the mating season has also begun . Bear Rocco has had a crush on Luna , so our caretakers started planning to socialise the enamoured couple. After a few weeks of preparation and the bears sniffing each other from neighbouring enclosures... we opened the gate. When they faced each other without the barriers between them, they could hardly believe their luck at first. But soon, nobody could stop these lovebirds f...rom playing and frolicking in the same enclosure. What a day! No longer #saddestbears, both Luna and Rocco are #happybears now. #DidYouKnow we do not breed bears (or big cats) in our FOUR PAWS wildlife sanctuaries; all male animals are castrated or vasectomised. 08.01.2022 #AnimalRescue Stories from the field: Meet rescued kittens Sreymoa (black and white) and Pheakdey (tortoiseshell). Found at a Cambodian pagoda , these two kittens were quite ill when we found them. They had severe upper respiratory infections, and eyes glued shut from severe eye infections. Tragically, one of their siblings had already died . Luckily, they still had a good appetite, a fighting will to live, and they still had their mum nearby. ... A nun at the temple said she will care for this special cat family, so we treated the kittens, provided antibiotics and fluids, and equipped their carer with special food, eye drops, and everything else the kittens need to ensure a quick recovery. 03.01.2022 A look back at the rescue of Motan Motan has experienced so much in just one short year. This magnificent lion was rescued from a horrific zoo in early 2019. After spending life in a concrete cage, Motan and his companion Pisa arrived at our LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary & Lodge in South Africa in April 2019. Those first moments when they stepped out of their transport crate were incredible, but also heartbreaking. ... When taking their first steps outside, they didn’t know how to react to the sensation of grass under their feet. Motan struggled to walk on the grass and looked up at the open sky with caution. But now one year on, Motan is walking and running with confidence. He and Pisa, who are so close, are now energetic and playful, enjoying their new lives in the Africa sun. 03.01.2022 We're on an ADOPTION STREAK at the moment - TOTO and GROOT As you probably remember, Toto, Groot and their terrified companions were found crammed into metal cages after being intercepted by Cambodian authorities on their way to slaughter. We worked with Paw Patrol Cambodia to rescue, shelter, and find these #61rescueddogs loving homes. Toto's story caught the attention of Sreyhun and her family. They love dogs and she was looking for a companion for their puppy and her... son. She brought her son along to the shelter to meet Toto - and what can we say, they fell in love immediately. His new, kind-hearted family also made a donation to purchase dog food for the friends he left behind - and they are actually interested in adopting a second dog soon. It is really great to see how most Cambodians are refusing to be a part of the dog and cat meat trade and shows overwhelming kindness towards animals! For Groot, a local family was looking to adopt a new dog after their previous one had passed away. They were looking for a dog who was not too boisterous for their elderly mother and decided on a foster period to see if things would work out. What can we tell you: it was a perfect match ! Groot is gentle and good with the young children in the family too. Despite all the horrors he faced, he was able to overcome his trauma and place complete trust in his new family. Cute Groot likes to follow his new owners everywhere. We’re so happy for both Toto and Groot!
