23.01.2022 Passion! Absolute passion and dedication towards her farm and her work! What an unexpectedly brilliant way to finish up. Called in to see our final farmer on the way back to Seattle (Where we fly out tomorrow). I had to make an appointment to see Naty King. She is a very busy long time organic farmer on 6 acres about 45 minutes south of Vancouver. We lost our way and were 10 minutes late (as her office manager reminded us). Two-way messages backwards and forwards between the ...two of them told me just how pressed for time she is. Twice I tried to say "It's okay if she's too busy. We can leave." "No, it's okay. She's on her way. She can only give you half an hour because she has a meeting at 4.00." It was well over an hour later, some time well after 4.00 when we finally left, grateful for the time given to us, but probably no more grateful than Naty herself for the conversation we struck up. Naty is in her 60's, of slight build, thin and wiry. Definitely tough, in a strong assertive way that's become necessary for the business survival this widowed Philippino Masters graduate. We learned of her dedication to promoting healthy food practices, she talked of her constant struggles to retain her markets, of managing workers with no agricultural background and "'barely out of diapers" who try and tell her how to do the job she's been doing for the last 30 years. She talked about her struggles and isolation as a single female farmer in a province (if not a whole country) where no formal rural women's networks exist. (How fortunate we are). She spoke passionately about her experiences with exceptional Philippine women farmers who earn virtually nothing for their labour and of her desire to empower these women to take control of their lives and their circumstances. On and on we went and could have talked for hours. Such a high to finish on. I see potential for some amazing international rural women's networking........... That's it for me from this side of the world. Currently in Arlington, Washington, doing a final check of our bags before heading to the airport. Thanks for sharing this part of my Rural Women's Award journey with me. What a journey it's been. I look forward to catching up with many of you back home. See more

17.01.2022 As much as I loved Canada and USA it is so good to be home and sleeping in my own bed. Went for a run early in the early morning frost and lost count of the different bird songs. Home, I love your smell, your sounds and your colour. Yellow wattle blossom, multi-coloured daffodils, black and white lambs, green grass, red soil, white frost against a blue, blue sky! Thanks kids for all you hard work while we were gone.

12.01.2022 Had a wonderful night at the Rural Industries R&D Corp Rural Women's Award finals presentation dinner at Parliament House, Canberra, last night. So humbling to be honoured alongside six amazing rural women in that Great Hall. Very happy for Pip Job of NSW, who was named 2014 winner and Jackie Jarvis of WA, 2014 runner-up. To all you wonderful women, thank you for being such a great bunch and for making this whole experience all the richer!
