24.01.2022 Be sure to get around this competition...prizes arent too shabby!!

24.01.2022 More grounds to justify extension of the Vic duck season.

23.01.2022 Angus keeping a watchful eye over the decoys, after 9 seasons he is still as focused as ever!

23.01.2022 It's been a looong time between drinks!! Great to be back out camping in 2020!

23.01.2022 We have been fortunate enough to spend a little bit of time down at The Heart this season and it has been one of the highlights of our 2020 season. Words and even imagers cannot describe the amount of work that has gone into the wetland and Gary, the team at Sale F&G and all the other volunteers that have donated their time and money to this project should be extremely proud. Until you have seen this place with your own eyes you simply cannot appreciate what a huge undertaking this project has been and how proud we should be of the job that our fellow water fowlers and conservationists have achieved.

23.01.2022 Feathers on the edges of rice bays are always a sign of a busy evening ahead.

23.01.2022 Magical sunset on the way back in tonight! Sad this short season is already coming to an end.

22.01.2022 And now we wait...let's hope Christmas comes early!!

22.01.2022 So the GMA says that science showed us that our duck season should only go for 20 days with a bag limit of 2...but the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research (a government body) came out with this interesting table showing we could sustain a 30-50 day season with 8 birds, 70-90 days for a bag of 5 per day or 90-120 days for a bag of 4. The lifting of the teal restriction and increase of the bag to 5 should just be the start...the time to get what we are owed is now!!

21.01.2022 We ended our 2020 season this morning with one of our favourite hunts for the season. The sun rose and with a quiet start we reflected on what was the 2020 season. We have hunted some awesome new locations, experienced some of the best hospitality from fellow hunters and made plenty of new memories with family and friends and it was clear that the 2020 season would go down in history for all the RIGHT reasons. While sharing some of our favourite memories three blackies screa...med into the decoys and we took all three cleanly all falling within the decoy spread. After some short retrieving work from Angus we knew that was the perfect finish for the season. For now our attention turns to the weather as we watch the radar with anticipation while we hope and pray for some decent winter rainfall and if the rain starts falling the anticipation levels will rise for what could be one of the best NSW rice seasons we have experienced in a number of years!

20.01.2022 If you haven't already, get around the team at DUCK OPS and give them a like for more brilliant and informative posts like this!

18.01.2022 Lake Hume still on the up though has slowed in the last week. Murray valley irrigators recieved a 3% increase to 15%, whilst the Murrumbidgee system increased 2% to 46% allocation. Hopefully borders are opened in time for Victorians to get across and help NSW rice farmers protect their crops from what are sure to be large numbers of ducks this rice growing season.

18.01.2022 After a few years with minimal water allocations, it was great to get amongst some hot action on the rice fields of NSW last night. Its a hot one this arvo, so we look forward to what tonight might bring!

18.01.2022 Taken from the awesome folk at DUCK OPS: Holy smoke !! Amazing rainfall is being predicted over the Eastern States during the next two weeks.... If these rainfall events transpire, there will be no denying waterfowl hunters unmodified and maximum hunting opportunities in 2021. Hunters have worn some very questionable decisions in recent years, but the data is now firmly in the their court. What a great outlook to introduce friends to duck hunting. Nothing inspires more than widespread habitat in Spring and thousands of ducks breeding in it. The next serve is on its way

18.01.2022 Great drop overnight, and so widespread!!! It's great to have you back La Nina!!!

18.01.2022 ***CALL TO ACTION - THE TIME IS NOW*** Please follow the link and send your letter direct to the Minister. It is incredibly easy to have your voice heard in trying to get the Victorian duck season extended.

17.01.2022 One more pickup before things start to heat up!

16.01.2022 And in amongst everybody sending letters to politicians and applying pressure to provide a right and just season as indicated by the government's own Arthur Rylah Institute, good things like this continue to happen...

15.01.2022 It is only right and just that the season be extended!! DUCK OPS continuing to tell it like it is!!

14.01.2022 Some good falls have occurred overnight and into this morning in the State's South West. It appears to have struggled to get past the divide into the catchments that flow through to the likes of Buloke and Kerang, but with bigger and more falls forecast for later this week, this will prove to be a fantastic start. Keep in mind that we only entered a La Nina phase last week and the long term prognosis is for wet weather through to January 2021. Exciting times!!!

14.01.2022 Lake Hume continues to rise and with it have the water allocations for farmers in the NSW Riverina. The Murrumbidgee system now has an allocation of 44% whilst the Murray increased 4% to 12% total. Even if we cant cross the borders to help our farming friends, it is great to see them getting some water for the first time in years!

13.01.2022 Last night's sunset did not disappoint!

12.01.2022 Another great article from the team at DUCK OPS on the Australia's Maned Goose aka Wood Duck. Enjoy the read.

11.01.2022 Fantastic to see photos like this showcasing species like hardhead and blue wing shoveler in what were previously dry wetland systems. Just goes to show our ducks dont just die...they move in response to environmental conditions.

09.01.2022 ***HEAVY RAINFALL WARNING*** Despite all the forecasts that have never come to fruition, we always get excited to see warnings for heavy rainfall like this one, hunters are the eternal optimists.

08.01.2022 Let’s flood FB with pictures from this weekend. Post to your own pages. Please tag #closing2020 Protect Our Heritage.

08.01.2022 Really missing being up in the NSW Riverina assisting farmers with crop protection at the moment. The warmer weather has definitely shifted the mind onto the current rice growing period in NSW. Hopefully some announcements are made with regards to border restrictions easing in the near future.

07.01.2022 Some great falls today in Western NSW, on top of impressive totals yesterday in South West QLD and SA. All of this is really quite exciting given the majority of climate models are indicating a very wet last few months of the year. Hang on to your hats, if this year's rain throughout the east coast wasnt enough to get you excited, we are confident the next few months will!... Our waterfowl can breed quickly in response to water availability, and on the back of the Lake Eyre flood last year, we are sure to experience another explosion in duck numbers!

06.01.2022 Tonight we read a bizarre story touting the amazing story of the success of the place labelled Winton Wetlands... To long time locals, this special place ...will always be known as Mokoan or Winton Swamp. We will not republish this article, but safe to say some cold hard facts need to be spelt out.. Between 2005-2009, the local communities of the North East including Benalla and Wangaratta fought in desperation to stop the draining of Lake Mokoan. Unfortunately against public sentiment, the Bracks Govt needed the vote of East Gippsland independent Craig Ingram. To win this, water needed to be found in the system and returned to the Snowy River.....The deal was done and Lake Mokoan along with the dreams of locals flowed down the Broken River. In the 11 years since, the State Govt of Victoria has invested almost 20 million dollars into a concept that has failed the people. The venue never established a case for an environmental watering plan, and has only had water a handful of times in the decade since. The wetland as a marketable venue to attract ecotourism has failed. A wetland without water on a regular basis will NEVER attract the required tourism to support the business model. Particularly when you remove public activities that communities enjoyed for generations. According to local Shires, the project is now delivering less than zero economic benefit to the region. This is a travesty. The venue is overrun with vermin and now large numbers of Sambar deer, with the management enlisting pro shooters at a cost of thousands...all the while locking out recreational hunting. No matter how many bike tracks you build... No matter how many trees you paint pink.... No mater how many commissioned sculptured murals and portraits you erect... IT WILL NEVER REPLACE WHAT WAS LOST. The venue is not a private art gallery... It’s the public recreational heart of North East Victoria... all 8,500 Hct of it ! It should be enjoyed and used in the best way to benefit the region and its community ... AND IT IS NOT. Whilst there are some good people in this project, the sheer arrogance of the committee of management in not acknowledging community wants from this public crown reserve is disgraceful. The facts are, this current style of Elitist ecotourism will never repair the rift between the community and its current governors. This was once the biggest recreational economic driver in the region.... The jewel of the North East they called it ! There was a marketing change recently reintroducing the name Mokoan in an effort to distance itself from a brand that has become tainted. The battle to give Mokoan back to the traditional user groups is far from over. The State Govt is so far into the red for the coming budget, it’s almost impossible to see them continuing this pink elephant whilst supplying ongoing funding. The facts are this venue needed to be able to stand on its own feet without the Victorian tax payer propping it up to the tune of millions of dollars...and it hasn’t. Where will it go post the current regime... That is the big question. Stay angry and demand to see Mokoan opened again to traditional recreational uses like fishing, hunting and boating. It’s time to fight for Mokoan again ######## PLEASE SHARE #####

05.01.2022 Pretty cool Lunar Halo out tonight and although not a great shot there are some people that swear this ring around the moon is a sign that rain is on the cards. We can only hope.

05.01.2022 We hope everyone enjoys the last few days of this 2020 season!

03.01.2022 Here's a ripping article put together by the guys at Duck Ops on one of our favourite ducks to hunt, the mighty Black Duck!! Enjoy, head across and give them a like!

02.01.2022 ***Hunting has no effect on waterfowl populations*** Did you know that in November of the year 2000, there was a report handed down in NSW called the scientific panel review of open seasons for waterfowl in New South Wales. Amongst the authors of Webb and Fullagar was also Professor Richard Kingsford. Professor Kingsford has been responsible for the Eastern Australian Waterbird Survey for the last 30 plus years, so it is safe to say his opinion counts for much in determining ...our waterfowl seasons. This review came to the conclusion of saying "All scientific studies available to the review indicate that hunting has no effect on waterfowl populations. In case you missed that..." hunting has no effect on waterfowl populations" Kind of makes us wonder why the season setting process has become such a circus given the above finding. - 10 birds (including 2 Shoveler) a day - Full length season Case closed.

02.01.2022 ***2021 Duck Season Expectations*** We were thrilled to see the announcement this week that Australia has entered into a strong La Nina phase which typically results in increased rainfall for Northern and Eastern Australia. The last time this occurred saw the floods of 2010/2011 which resulted in phenomenal breeding conditions, booming waterfowl numbers and increased hunting opportunities.... Environmental conditions now are arguably much better than those existing prior to the 2010/2011 floods at the end of the millenium drought so we are set up beautifully for at least a repeat performance if all of this comes to play. Have no doubt, waterfowl numbers will be explosive on the back of the significant flooding and breeding that occurred at the start of 2019 in the Lake Eyre Basin and its tributaries. Therefore it is only reasonable and logical to expect a full length, full duration duck season in 2021. Anything less is purely political gameplay. Hunters have proven to be significant contributors to the Victorian economy, and now more than ever, we can't wait to hand over our hard earned dollars to those who need it most after the devastating effects on the economy of COVID-19 and the terrible bushfires earlier this year. Victorian duck hunters are only too ready to venture into regional Victoria, contribute to the local economies, and have the opportunity to harvest 10 ducks per day (of which 2 should be Shoveler) for the full length of the season, running from the third Saturday in March to the Queen's Birthday Holiday in June in 2021.

01.01.2022 NSW - Oh how we've missed you!!
