24.01.2022 Get to know more about Kayla Witte: How long have you worked at Fox and Thomas? 11.5 years. What’s one thing that you have learnt from working in family law and deceased estates that you can pass on to your clients? It’s important to be honest and transparent with your solicitor throughout your matter. Whether it be a love child, secret bank accounts or a multitude of loans We’ve seen it all so don’t hold back the truth. We are here to help. ... What’s something that clients should consider before separating from their partner? It’s a very emotional time for those involved, so don’t be afraid to seek help or advice from a Family Law Solicitor prior to making any final decisions. Being armed with the correct information and being aware of what is involved may help to ease some of the stress that comes with a separation. The artwork featured in Kayla's picture was created by Maryika Welter.

21.01.2022 Melissa Hill shared some insights recently about her work in the Commercial team, did you know she brings her years of commercial and taxation law work to benefit the Family Law team as well? She’d like to share some more with you. What do you love most about your job in the Family and Estates team? The fact that clients allow us into their lives on such a personal level. What’s one thing that you have learnt from working in family law and deceased estates that you can pass ...on to your clients? Keep focused on the big picture, it is very easy to be derailed by the small issues. What’s something that clients should consider before separating from their partner? Making sure they have the right support networks around them, to either help them through a rough patch in the relationship. If a separation does occur, it is important they have this network to help them through what is a very emotionally challenging and draining time. What’s one thing you recommend clients ensure that they have sorted before they die? It might seem really obvious, but many people don’t have an updated will that reflects their current wishes!! The artwork featured in Melissa's picture was created by Denise Jackson.

20.01.2022 Fox and Thomas had a wonderful time at the Goondiwindi Picnic Races on Saturday. Shout out to the committee for putting on yet another seamless event!

17.01.2022 Is your superfund's registered office in Sydney? Do you have shares in a company with its registered office in NSW? Even if you don't live in NSW, certain assets can be subject to NSW law and vulnerable to a Notional Estates order. Read our bulletin for more information.

06.01.2022 You may have seen Lauren Farrelly featured as part of our Commercial team, well she complements her Estate Planning work by also practicing in our Estate Litigation and Estate Administration team, here are some more comments she has to share with you. What’s one thing that you have learnt from working in family law and deceased estates that you can pass on to your clients? Just because you have a valid Will, doesn’t mean that it remains appropriate if your circumstances have... changed before you die (i.e. started or ended a relationship, you’ve had children, you’ve bought or sold assets). What’s one thing you recommend clients ensure that they have sorted before they die? Consider how your superannuation will be dealt with following your death. Will it go to your preferred beneficiaries? Will there be tax payable? Getting specialist advice on how your superannuation should be dealt with in your overall estate plan is critical to ensuring the people you want to benefit from these funds actually do receive them! What’s the most unusual gift you’ve dealt with in a will? I had a family fight for 9 months over broken cow de-horners - none of the beneficiaries even had their own cattle! Sentimentality is sometimes the enemy of practicality and common sense when it comes to distributing deceased estates. The artwork featured in Lauren's picture was created by Diana Battle.

03.01.2022 Top tips to consider when buying residential land: 1. We strongly recommend you make the contract conditional on a building and pest inspection, doing so could save you having to undertake costly repairs in the future. 2. If you are a first home buyer or purchasing a home to live in, ensure you let your conveyancer know so that they can advise you on any stamp duty concessions you may be eligible for. 3. Know when you should start insuring the property, if you are not sure, ...talk to us. Often you should have the property insured on the day you sign the contract, not from the settlement date. 4. Set realistic timeframes for any special conditions that need to be met. If you need finance to fund the purchase, we recommend you talk to your bank first and get an idea on how long you might need to satisfy the finance condition and then for funds to be paid at settlement. 5. Know your rights and obligations under the contract - always speak to your solicitor or conveyancer first before signing a contract. See more
