If baby is showing symptoms of colic you’re not alone. About 1/4 of babies experience colic, and while this does not indicate the presence of a serious medical issue, it is always best to check with your Paediatrician or GP. If baby is otherwise healthy, colic usually settles somewhere between 3-9 months of age. Until then, t...here are a few ways you can help soothe and settle baby. 1. Ensure the correct latch. If baby isn’t latching properly they will be swallowing a lot of air while they feed. An appointment with a lactation nurse will provide helpful support and put your mind at rest. If baby is bottle fed, try changing teats and give frequent breaks. Slowing feeds to burp baby multiple times can help reduce the amount of air being swallowed. Never prop the bottle, this is extremely dangerous! 2. Change your Diet or Change Formula. Try eliminating foods from your diet such as dairy, eggs, nuts, wheat, and foods that increase the production of gas. If baby is formula fed, speak with your doctor about changing to a hypoallergenic formula. 3. Wear Baby. Wearing or holding baby in an upright position is an easy and super effective solution. The motion will keep baby calm and may even lull them to sleep. 4. Movement. Take a walk with the pram, go for a drive, use an approved age appropriate baby swing. As with wearing/holding, the motion works a treat. 5. Massage. Giving the tummy a gentle massage in a clockwise direction helps get things moving and expel trapped gas. Most importantly!
