23.01.2022 Repost from @functionalpatterns - It is great that people these days are finally not resting in the deep squat position. Just a couple years ago, people were ra...ving about it. We have all heard that people in Asia sit in a deep squat. Apparently because people in asia do it, we all have to do it. That is what the exercise gurus say atleast. I sure as hell don't buy it. Since FP actually gets results, it may be worth your time to listen up. . Everyone has a variation of a scoliosis. Some have it hidden with small herniation, while others simply just show the curves more. When you deep squat, you are deep squatting into that scoliosis. The force you are going to put on one of your hips doing this is going to lead to some seriously bad issues later. . . People get way ahead of themselves with their movement. The deep squat is not something anyone should be working on. If creating a hyperflaccid hip joint to compensate for a spine you can't retension in a functional capacity makes sense to you, in about 3 to 5 years you're going to pay the price. . . The solution to your pains isn't more extreme movement. The deep squat is extreme. Leave it alone until your gait is near perfect or fairly well codified. Some of the most damaged bodies I have seen are those of the deep squatters. Occassionally this trend comes back and I'm preemptively giving you perspective so you can be a bit more skeptical on doing this exercise when that gimmick shows up on ur feed. . . Don't get ahead of yourselves my people. #functionaltraining #deepsquat #squat #overrated #prehab #rehab See more

20.01.2022 **RESULTS** @fp_brisbane Oct 28 2019 > Jan 7 2020 > March 13 2020 Improvements in scoliotic curve Improved joint stacking and scapular positioning Improved balance and coordination... Improved cognitive function and proprioception Due to severe head trauma received early last year, training @melissathewong has been a tedious process. Dynamic movement has been all but off the table as her cognitive functions would decline rapidly resulting in dizziness and a loss of balance. The changes seen here have been brought about entirely by the application of @functionalpatterns correctives (IMAPS) and myofascial release. Training in relation to our biomechanical blueprint targets all systems of the body, including the vestibular system so it’s no surprise to see an improvement in her balance and coordination as we start to ramp up her dynamic movement. Looking forward to continued results from this dedicated client I have seen significant improvement to my coordination, posture and proprioception through Functional Patterns. These sessions have played a key part in my journey to recover my cognitive and physical functions after my injury. Shane is an effective coach with a keen eye and knowledge for movement patterns. I have really enjoyed training with him. . . . . #fpisthestandard #Functionalpatterns #fpbrisbane #tuneintotheboring #relevanthumanoptimisation #leveragingmotions #scoliosis #gait #biomechanics #functionalfitness #functionaltraining #brisbanept See more

19.01.2022 Posterior view gait cycle upgrades. Before is Apr2018 at hbs2 I was suffering lower back pain as well as on and off pain in my left knee. Mentally I wasn’t on top of things. I weighed about 73kg. After Is Dec2019 I’m no longer in pain, I feel much more connected and competent, sprinting feels therapeutic now and I feel more balanced mentally. I weigh 78kg about 3kg of that growth is lean muscle.... @functionalpatterns is the only way to recover and optimise the functions that make us human. Looking forward to making more upgrades in this skin suit. . . . #functionalpatterns #fpbrisbane #fpqld #fpaustralia #tuneintotheboring #relevanthumanoptimisation #leveragingmotions #fpisthestandard #gait #biomechanics #functionalfitness #functionaltraining #brisbanept #brisbanelife #brisbane #f45 #crossfit #pilates #yoga #kettlebell #deadlift #squat #brisbane #brisbanefitness #fitnessbrisbane #brisbanelife #brisbaneworkout

17.01.2022 From @naudiaguilar . It amazes me how every generation of fitness has the bulk of it cluttered with trivialities. People giving them the idea that something that compresses their spine can be good for them. Other than pure indoctrination, there is no reason to put a barbell on your neck and do a squat. A squat is good. The premise spine of passive spine compression isn't. That said, the squat is way overdone because it strictly takes place in a plane of motion that didn't ge...nerate human mechanics. . . Why do people care so much about squats? Because their option for training variability with clients is not so diverse. Staying in the sagittal plane training clients allows you the opportunity to rest your brain as a trainer. You don't have to think much to cue a simple hinge with a neutral spine. If you think that's tough and come into my lab to see what I do when I train, you would likely get a panic attack. . . Look guys, I don't play touchbutt at the gym. People's health isn't a money game for me. If they come to me, I know they have low expectations. My aim is not to meet those low expectations. My aim is to show them that I have the most valuable thing a human could ever offer another human. . . I don't measure myself up with other trainers. If I did, I would have been stuck doing what I knew 12 years ago. It took me about a year to realize how slow people were in my field. I studied some of the "elites" in my field after 8 years ago when I got railed on a forum. When I saw what was around even at the high levels was mostly incompetence. I couldn't believe what I saw. I saw the products of really low expectations. . . If you're a trainer, get your shit together. You got clients out there who need real help. You being stuck on a sagittal based program and a hyperflaccid multiplane program isn't doing much other than calcifying the wrong parts of people's bodies. Own your shit. Quit making me the enemy because I make you look bad because I actually care. It's not my fault you don't care. . . Just sayin... #functionalpatterns #biomechanicsculture #leveragingmotion #tuneintotheboring #relevanthumanoptimization #makehumansfunctionalagain See more

16.01.2022 Relaxed posture Feb2016>Dec2019 I was flicking through my old pics from when I began my journey through Fp and found these. I remember how shocked I was seeing my distorted frame after I took these. It did not match the image I had in my head at all. I was in constant pain and frequenting the chiropractor once, twice and sometimes three times per week. I’d had enough. Fast forward to now my structure has completely changed, still a degenerate but far less than before. I don’...t live in chronic pain and I have the tools to continue to move my body toward a lasting state of homeostasis, thanks to @functionalpatterns. Posture changes aren’t the end goal, pain free efficient movement is. By focusing on improving my gait and unwinding the asymmetries in it my body has found a new position in space. 16.01.2022 @functionalpatterns In life, we all hear that we need to get our priorities straight. You rarely hear this when it comes to training. The common notion is that ...any exercise you do is good exercise. That as long as you're moving, you're doing great. Although one can make an argument for that, we see it a bit differently.. . . There are some movements that are more compatible with the human body than others. The concern we have at @functionalpatterns is determining what movements seem to correspond with our blueprint. The more we code human movement, the more obvious it becomes that running optimally is the best way to get in shape and stay young. . . This all sounds simple enough until our running is put on video. Many people in our field film their squat form. Very few film their running form. I think filming running form should be a benchmark to gauge fitness. . . There are a select few who train squats and still run well, but the good running is likely genetically hardwired into their structure. Most of us are hard wired to not run well. The purpose of FP is to create the environmental stimuli to hardwire good mechanics into the body. . . We know that changing running mechanics to most is not a big deal. When we showcase a biomechanical change on videos, they get a lesser response than other posts. Believe it or not, the greatest changes that happen on people physically often times are facilitated by better running. The idea is a bit ahead of the times, but in the future that will change. . . Film your running and analyze it in slow motion. It will give you insight into a lot of what's going on in your body. See more

16.01.2022 from @naudiaguilar . I'm not sure people get what I mean by this quote. I see variations of it popping up and I really don't think people see what I'm getting at here. . .... The prefrontal cortex (front portion of our brain) has the capacity to focus on things in isolation. Its ability to select multiple things at the same time is very limited. For example, running is a mostly unconscious function that involves probably billions of variables. Our awareness of running while we do it is very minimal, meaning there are other parts of our brain highly involved when we run. That said, if we select fundamental principles to focus on with the use of our prefrontal cortex that alter parts of those billions of connections in running, we can alter the unconscious. Whether it's good or not relates to what we focus on changing and whether it applies to life or not. . . Point is that we intentionally focus on things to reroute our unconscious for the better. This concept is nothing new and hardly special. What is special about FP is that it actually follows through on the slogan. . . Lol, the alterations of this quote are a bit disconcerting when I think about the work I put in to figure the stuff I do out. Capitalism is capitalism though and it will do what it does. Fortunately, the results through FP get more astounding and when a standard is set, the idea of changing a slogan would appear to be ridiculous in the future for any businessman. It's a major goal of mine. Think intentional, not habitual @functionalpatterns

08.01.2022 ***RESULTS*** Before: relaxed After: active shoulder protraction/elevation ... My client Helen came to me quite the mess. It’s been a tough slog getting her to this stage but we have laid some solid foundations and now we can look to really build on that and have her running efficiently and pain free. Her issues ranged from pain in her lower left side of back and hip, left quad soreness, neck pain from the sling worn for 7 weeks straight as a result of a left shoulder surgery that was in chronic pain ore and post surgery all on top of a very compressed structure. Great work Eleni you’re a star! Client testimonial: Much appreciation to Shane who trained me. After 3.5 years of chronic shoulder pain, pre and post surgery. I am now pain free and able to to do multiple reps, not just 2! 3.5 years of rehab does not compare to 4 months with fp! This was not the only correction Shane made. With attention to detail he corrected many issues. I now walk and live my life functionally, with intention and no more aches and pains! Thank you Shane for always responding to my texts. You are a great support and mentor!

07.01.2022 from @naudiaguilar . Covid seems to be making a comeback right now and science apparently doesn't have an answer to it. Seems like the only safe bet is to focus on being healthier people. As a society we focus on many things things that aren't oriented around health. We get distracted by things like god, love, sex, status, economics, politics, purpose, but we seldom orient ourselves around the thing that addresses most of life's concerns altogether. It's not to say those ide...as listed are all bad, they just shouldn't be a priority in this society right now. . . . . If we all prioritized our health, I think our society would be much different. It appears that most people's idea of what health is really isn't that healthy, since they pay little attention to it to begin with. The idea that we can rely on exogenous psychoactive substances while eating healthy and exercises is one of the more concerning revelations I see people coming to these days. . . The goal at @functionalpatterns is to establish baseline health that demonstrates what health was supposed to be all these years. My objective is to eliminate the ambiguity on the topic. Health can be quantified. The version of health to the medical system is really not that healthy. Things have to change and I'm here to help make that change. Actions speak and I'm going to display them until real health is realized. #functionalpatterns

06.01.2022 ***RESULTS*** Relaxed posture Before Jan 2020... After July 2020 Anterior>>> hip hike and rib shift improved knee valgus improved Posterior>>> lumbar decompressed Lateral>> posterior pelvic shift thoracic extension core engagement My client Joanna came to me through recommendation of her daughter. She came with open curiosity and encouraged by the results her daughter had achieved committed to train with me. Her dedication to her own progress has been outstanding and I could not ask for a better mind to train. Her body is catching up. This is just a snapshot of her progress and we have much to work on but at 62 years of age we are putting the breaks on the ageing process as we move her into the realm of efficient movement. Great work Joanna! Client Testimonial. Last 20 years activities included lifting weights, hiking, jogging, with plenty of stretching, being trained by personal trainers along the way. Diffuse disc bulge, poor coordination & balance, pronated feet, knees turned inwards & lower back often going out of alignment. These symptoms became obvious after 2 years of yoga & never progressing beyond foundation level. I started weekly sessions with Shane January 2020, & the 10 week online course a bit later. Gave up the weights, yoga, orthotics, stretching & all casual/work shoes with heels. My height when I was younger was 5ft 3ins, during my 50’s I shrunk to 5ft 2ins, now, at 62 I am 5ft 3.6ins, the tallest I’ve ever measured! Thanks to Shane for his tremendous effort in addressing the multiple dysfunctions on my body. You are patient, encouraging and not afraid to push me if I need it, but I know you care & continue to motivate me to make progress as seen to date #fpisthestandard #Functionalpatterns #fpbrisbane #tuneintotheboring #relevanthumanoptimisation #leveragingmotions #biomechanics

For us, the change has to be seen to be believed. We are skeptical of ...everyone, mostly ourselves. We all understand in FP that making changes is difficult and that we ourselves need to get better to give people the help they need. Mark showcasing that tenacity right here.
