25.01.2022 It is true that every new generation demands and deserves the right to put its unique stamp on the world previous generations pass onto them. However in the case of Byron, the current mob in power in the BSC chambers have excelled only in their under achievement and grotesque urban planning. "We're going to build a Wall..!" With the Bypass and the Bus Interchange comes a solid concrete wall both sides of Butler St. Without even first consulting the residents about what came ...with the Bus Interchange and Bypass, BSC is now about to wall in the residents of Butler St and the adjoining neighbourhood. Its more akin to how the Palestians are forced to live in modern day Israel. Or the Mexicans kept out of the American Dream (or is it the Nightmare..?) by Trump's Wall. They are bent on stripping away totally what my generation tried so hard to pull off in making Byron 'different'. Its full steam ahead with BSC to make Byron look like any other post modern industrial and suburban wasteland up and down the east coast of Australia.
25.01.2022 Outsiders not used to living or looking into the Bush, often mistake the vast sprawling canvas of green that rings our Northern Rivers communities and towns as a sign that, bushfires aside, all is well in our native forests. However, to the educated eye, what passes for ‘biodiversity’ and 'healthy habitat' for our native birds and wildlife is in fact a suffocating sprawl of introduced weeds, and rapidly taking over non-native imported species. Such as the hundreds of thousand...s of prolific camphor trees brought here from Asia during the last two centuries. Or the invasive bamboo which takes no prisoners in its rapid take-over where once habitat existed. In this video clip, two local bush regenerators, Stuart McDonald and Simon Eastburn give a practical demonstration of how the two invasive species of bamboo can be efficiently gotten rid of. Freeing up the land for replanting of native forest species that once grew prolifically here.
24.01.2022 Who is watching Foreign Correspondent tonight on West Papua?
24.01.2022 Last week Byron Shire Council’s Bypass contractors Hazell Brothers- moved into the beautiful little remaining glen of rainforest I’ve grown so attached to over the last six months of documenting the Butler St destruction. It hurt to see what had gone under the Blade. We all are obliged to abide by the laws of the land the latest obliges us to keep 2m safe distance between our fellows; to stay inside. Or cop a fine. Why can the Big Boys Byron Council and Hazell Brothe...rs - destroy a flourishing patch of native rainforest and melaleuca swamp forest, snubbing their noses at the Environmental Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act (federal law) and the state Biodiversity Conservation Act? And get away with it...? Because they have the Power? Why are we obliged to obey the Law but the Federal Dept of Energy and Environment and the NSW Dept of Environment does not insist on public and private authorities upholding its own laws? Corona virus aside, it seems Nature and the Earth's Lifeforce is under attack from all sides. At this critical time when we ALL should be acting as good custodians towards the planet. If you agree with the inherent integrity and truth found within this clip, please Share with your friends. Why? Because we have to hold accountable our Councillors, its senior staff, Hazell Brothers (the contractors making a lot of money out of this destruction) and the senior state and federal bureaucrats who have turned a blind eye to it all. Don’t give up! I haven’t.
24.01.2022 For a good while I've been wanting to connect with filmmaker and creative animatronic artist John Cox and his tango dancing partner in business and life, Julie Anderson. I finally pulled it off two days ago and visited their studio on the Gold Coast with my mate, Graeme Sproule from Mullum who introduced me to them. John Cox's Creature Workshop was a delight to visit with its array of famous moulds of shark heads, large man eating crocs, gorillas, head moulds of famous acto...rs such as Daniel Defoe. And in pride of place his Oscar for his work on Babe. John started out in the backyard garage of his father's in Caringbah, Sydney. Aged 14. After he saw and was mesmerised by the first King Kong movie. For hundreds of schoolboy hours John would experiment with his Super 8 camera, painting images and shooting through two large sheets of window glass he got his dad to collect from old buildings dad demolished. John would send off the Super 8 cartridges to be developed by the local chemist. Then wait nervously for a week or more for the processed film to come back. Too many crash-and-burn moments of despair in those first experimental days to care to remember; reviewing notes as to why things went so horribly wrong. Learning from those mistakes developed John into being one of the best in his field internationally with his work used in movies studios all over the world. See more
24.01.2022 I pray we all would pause after watching this clip for a minute's silence and reflection, in our busy and Covid plauged world; to reflect on what happened in Beirut yesterday, what happens every other day in bombs ripping peoples' lives and loved ones apart, in the Middle East, in Syria, in Iraq, Afghanistan and other cities all over the world, planted with a spirit of hatred and revenge that lies within the human heart of us all, as it did with America dropping the bomb on t...he people of Hiroshima and Japan 75 years ago. Today, I personally pray for Peace, even as the US and China slide further towards war which would inevitably escalate very quickly to a nuclear nightmare for ALL of us; that the world's leaders will NEVER again reach for the nuclear button to settle our differences. I pay tribute in this clip to an amazingly courageous Australian journalist, Wilfred Burchett, who 75 years ago risked his life to go to Hiroshima three weeks after the bomb was dropped, to report to the world what that new bomb meant for us all. (Note the irony and silent symbolic warning from the Twin Towers still standing in the backdrop of the picture frame when I did the interview with Wilfred 39 years ago in New York City...).
22.01.2022 Some run and gun filming yesterday at the protest in Mullum which was a march for ‘freewill and rejecting all forms of tyranny'. It touched on issues such as the dangers of the 5G network, forced vaccinations and the lack of government consultation ie. listening to the people. We will post an edited clip from the event in the next day or so.
20.01.2022 On the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, an assembly of Peace-loving elders (Just Peace -Brisbane and the Combined Unions’ Choir) join forces to remember the horror of the first use of nuclear weapons on the Japanese people. With America and China sabre rattling, the world suddenly faces the prospect of nuclear war again. Due to Australia’s military alliance with the United States, many Australians fear we will be dragged into a nuclear war that will devastate the whole of humanity.
19.01.2022 In honour of Richard Hil (no, Richard has not 'passed on'...just hung up his holster as founder and prime organiser for the Ngara Institute). Ngara brought the local Byron/Mullumbimby community many great speakers on topics not often covered in the straight media. And analysis of topics that made the connectioin between the economic regime called neo-liberalism (aka 'globalisation' or 'economic rationalism') and the diastrous effects this economic philosophy has had on commu...nities, tens of millions of people and the environment all over the world for the last 50 years. This is Part One of Richard's analysis of how we got stuck with it in a very carefully stage managed manouvre by conservative economists and philosophers who first met after the devastation of World War 2. And how, backed by billionaires, right wing think tanks which they set up, fostered and presented as the only way forward for humanity by right wing media moguls who pushed it. Richard tells us in Part 2 tomorrow what we can expect next from neo liberalism's newest spawn child - Disaster Capitalism - that Covid 19 is giving birth to right now. Forewarned is to be forearmed. Please share this important series with your thinking friends if you think Richard is incisive and instructive with laying out how we got to where we are today. And what awaits us just around the corner.
19.01.2022 Black Lives Matter. No More Deaths. Thousands march in Byron in solidarity with First Nations people to end deaths in custody. 432.

17.01.2022 Today in Brisbane supporters of free speech took to the streets to proclaim the innocence of whistle blowers Bernard Collaery and Witness K. The two men are heroes of our now fragile democracy, currently persecuted in a secret show trial in Canberra by the morally bankrupt Federal Attorney General Christian Porter, exposed on Four Corners tonight. https://www.abc.net.au//inside-the-canberra-bubble/12864676 Porter is protecting his mate the equally morally bankrupt Alexander Downer who when he was Foreign Minister, approved ASIS bugging the East Timorese government offices to get the inside running on our poorest neighbour's negotiating position in the oil and gas treaty that saw the East Timorese screwed over.
17.01.2022 In today’s last video clip (Part 5), Dr Richard Hil sounds the alarm bells for those of us who identify as being on ‘the Left’,the progressive side of politics. He asks what does the Left in Australia today, stand for? Richard argues it’s a critical time NOW for the Left to get its act together because of two bogies we all face: the consolidation of corporate power and the climate crisis. The pandemic has given rise for governments in the pocket of corporate power to capitali...se on what Naomi Klein calls Disaster Capitalism. He fears the progressive Left will shoot itself in the foot again (!), prefering as always it has, to find cold comfort more in what we disagree with about each other, rather than what we can find common purpose in confronting together. He is concerned that communities like Mullumbimby are turning towards localised, peripheral issues which while important (eg 5G or vaccination protests), come at the avoidance of the even more important Bigger Picture issues: economic inequality, increasing repression by the State, the climate emergency and ecological destruction. We really need to organise ourselves around these issues because if we don’t, we’re facing a very grim future indeed, he says.
16.01.2022 So many people turned up to the BLM rally and march in Byron today.
16.01.2022 Watched Planet of the Humans last night. Interesting film worth watching, albeit depressing with the damning allegations it makes. It really lays it on the line in exposing all the US so-called ‘environmental warriors’ we once looked up to like Al Gore, Bill McKibben from 350.org, Robert Kennedy Jr, the Sierra Club, Michael Bloomberg eg. making huge personal fortunes while pretending to care for the planet and the future in championing ‘sustainable’, ‘green’ based energy. T...he film portrays them as real ‘capitalists' at heart who have found another way of drawing in well intentioned and naive people to make millions from their venture capital scams. In particular, the film exposed the con that Biomass energy is ‘clean’ and ‘green’ as another good doco called ‘Burned’ has done. Biomass is the latest scam these multi millionaire charlatans are spruiking to enlarge their Cayman Island based tax free fortunes. Bio-mass is electricity that is generated by huge boilers (often in converted old coal fired power plants, particularly in Europe - countries like Germany who pretend to be carbon sensitive) burning woodchipped whole trees cut down in once healthy forests to produce electricity. Such bio-mass generated electricity is taking over from coal using the lie they only use ‘forest floor waste’. Close to home we have the likes of the UK based subsidiary Cape Byron Power currently adding to the destruction of the planet and the forests of northern NSW. As if the Bushfires haven’t devastated them enough before Biomass came to our shores. Cape Byron Power are burning wood chipped trees 24/7 from once healthy Australian forests home to endangered species like the koala. Woodchipped whole trees are fed into their huge blast furnaces with a voracious appetite to burn, polluting the Northern Rivers sky with their carbon emissions at their Condong plant near Murwillumbah and their Broadwater plants. Just the start of the final destruction of our forests with biomass plants set to pop up all over Australia, like Planet of the Humans graphically shows has happened in the US. Those furnaces emit 50% more carbon than old coal fired power stations do because wood burns at a lower temperature than coal. But Cape Byron Power call it ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ while their English shareholders pick up millions of dollars in annual subsidiaries from the mug Australian taxpayers to destroy our forests. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk11vI-7czE&t=3s
16.01.2022 Today we take a look at what drives indefatigable Byron Bay based pro Palestinian activist Gareth Smith. Gareth explains why he feels so passionate about Palestine; for the Palestinians treated like animals in the Gaza strip, refugees without rights in their own land which was taken from them by the western powers (Britain and the US) after World War 2 to create the modern day state of Israel. Gareth, whose heart for justice is as wide as the Red Sea, explains in this, the f...irst of a series of video clip interviews, why the so-called Abraham Accords that Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner have worked with the corrupt Israeli PM Netanyahu and the fascist Arab states of the UAE (who with Saudi Arabia have bombed and blockaded Yemen, leading to a catastrophic human rights nightmare with kids starved to death, no medicines or food getting in...) and Bahrain (who does whatever the Saudi royal family demand in return for its corrupt dictator staying in power ), will never work and is so unfair to the Palestinians. 15.01.2022 The actions of David McBride were courageous and morally the right thing to do. He should not spend years behind bars for exposing the horrendous SAS coverups which ultimately lead to the Brereton Report.
15.01.2022 Filmmaker David Bradbury (who made his Academy Award nominated film Chile Hasta Cuando? in 1985 at the height of Pinochet's military dictatorship...), combines forces in this clip with academic and activist Dr. Richard Hil to explain how Milton Friedman, 'high priest' of the Darwinian economic theories of Neo-liberalism((survival of the fittest...), to first advance their agenda in Chile as his guinea pig. Chile was perfect. It had a military dictator - General Pinochet - wh...o brushed aside his country's proud tradition of 100 years of democracy - to institute a brutal dictatorship, smashed all political opposition - grassroots opposition and trade union bargaining power - by torture, murder and disappearance. What lessons can we take to our experience today in Australia 2020 as we face our greatest economic challenges since the Great Depression? Part 4 tomorrow will address where and why we have arrived at where we are today with the current economic crisis. As Josh Frydenberg and PM Morrison announced today a budget deficit of $852billion by June next year. What will it mean for us?
15.01.2022 The Byron Shire community comes together to halt unfettered development to prevent it from becoming another Gold Coast. No, not recently...over twenty years ago as seen in the doco, Battle for Byron. ------------------ https://frontlinefilms.com.au/product/the-battle-for-byron/ https://frontlinefilms.vhx.tv/products/the-battle-for-byron/
14.01.2022 A Mullum icon was literally rubbed out two days ago. A beautiful old tree that had existed for a hundred years or more was ground back into the earth from whence it came by our Council who once prided itself as ‘doing things differently’ here. I, with others, watched in disbelief and heartache as this wonderful living work of art was cut down limb by limb. When you take the two ‘C’s’ out of ‘Community Consultation’, you’re left with ‘Confusion’ and ‘Conformity’ which is what... the new makeover of Byron shire by our councillors and its senior bureaucrats is delivering to us. Neither our mayor, the majority of councillors or the senior bureaucrats bother anymore to genuinely get out and talk to, or consult with the people; to find out what we’re all thinking and then do their best to unite our community behind perceived common goals; caring for each other, caring for nature that surrounds us. We’ve become like the rest of modern day Australia: only caring for me and mineand grabbing whatever material comforts we can while they still exist, to fill the void. See more
13.01.2022 An SBS story on Hiroshima Day (August 6) just passed which makes mention of Wilfred Burchett’s role in the reporting of the atomic bomb.
13.01.2022 Setting up at the Brisbane book launch of Peace Crimes: Pine Gap, National Security and Dissent by journalist Kieran Finnane. The book puts Australian militarism on trial by recounting the story of the peace movement against war and militarised surveillance. It includes the most recent action by five Christian activists who entered the spy base in 2016. https://alicespringsnews.com.au//five-more-peace-pilgrims/... ------------- Peace Crimes: A compelling investigative account into one of Australia’s most secret security sites and the people who infiltrated it. https://www.uqp.com.au/books/peace-crimes-1
13.01.2022 Dr Richard Hil continues his analysis today of how neo-liberalism has been so successful and where to from here? Have the neo-liberalists been successful? Yes, beyond Fredriech von Hayer's wildest dreams. And, according to today's stats the gap between Rich and Poor has never been as great for over 100 years going back to the times of Charles Dickens' England. Its been well documente how successful neo-liberalism has been on the economic front - the consolidation of corpor...ate power in all western societies. However on the social front, not so well documented this Darwinian approach to life where the Winner takes All, the cult of the individual and F-ck everyone else who gets in the way. We’ve seen what English writer George Monbiot calls the 'epidemic of loneliness' and what Australian social researcher Hugh Mackay calls 'the epidemic of anxiety'. And the rise of the Precarious class ie those on no fixed or guaranteed income. The casualization of the workforce and the destruction of organised labour and smashing the trade unions has lead to a radical decline in real income. Now what we’ve seeing argues Dr Hil, with hyper consumption, is the rise of personal debt. And Australian’s personal debt is one of the highest in the world. He sounds the alarm bells (rightly0 for post September when Jobkeeper and Jobseeker payments are to be scaled back. And predicts we’re going to see a radical rise in the number of poor Australians and homelessness on our streets. ‘We’re headed towards a very dystopian future a very dark, very conflictive society where there are huge divisions and acute repression’, says Dr Hil. What has underpinned all this and led to it, is the belief worldwide by politicans (of Left or Right eg New Labour in England, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating in Australia) is that there is no alternative to free market capitalism. Watch the video to hear from Richard how this came about:
12.01.2022 Yesterday, outside the electoral office of Tweed National Party MP Geoff Provest, 50 or so environmental activists (no one under the age of 50 alas, except Shaunti and Saul...) gathered to voice their displeasure with the turnabout of Premier Gladys and bowing to the Nats from protecting koalas from land clearing in NSW. Private land clearing of key koala habitat has gotten totally out of control in the last 3 years. Only to get worse if Glady's Bill is brought into law Nov ...11th. To please the Nats and their land developer, irresponsible farming practice mates. Please pass this video onto your friends and encourage them to jam their state MPS (NSW) email and Facebook accounts with a last minute plea for our koalas and the Bush before November 11th (ironically, Rememberance Day when we honour those who fought and died for protecting this country).
12.01.2022 We stand poised at an important Crossroads in history. No more so or less in the small Northern Rivers communities of Byron shire. History is changing fast on our tv News screens both here and overseas. And it can be frightening to those who feel they don't have a voice. That Big Government in far away cities will just roll over you without a second thought. Where the $ is the bottomline behind their and corporations' decision making. Communities and a sense of belonging can ...quickly evaporate in these uncertain times. People are set against each other which allows the the corporations and Government to have their way. Frontline Films is proud of the small but important role we play in bringing to our community issues we think you have a right to be informed about. Its vital communities like ours have access to ALL voices in such an important debate as 5G, vaccinating our kids and ourselves and press independence. We don't want to be divisive or say we are always 100% right. We're not. But we humbly ask you to respect everyone's viewpoint before deciding which side of the fence you fall on. And even then, do your best to be 'a good neighbour.' - David Bradbury.
11.01.2022 Great going Gen X or Y or Millenials. Whoever you are! You care and that's the main thing. AND you're DOING something about your caring for the Earth.
11.01.2022 We interviewed Monbiot back in 1997 when making A Hard Rain on why nuclear should not be an option for Australia. Here he is speaking on point about the coronavirus and those in charge.
08.01.2022 It is finally happening! In 90 days the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will come into force after Honduras became the 50th nation to ratify it. THIS IS A CATEGORICAL BAN ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS - 75 years after their first use. This is no thanks to Australia who is not one of the 50 countries to add their signature.... "How will this treaty affect them? Creating a new international norm which stigmatises the possession, use, and threat of use of nuclear weapons will not only impact countries which have their own nuclear weapons, but also countries that host nuclear weapons on their soil and in their waterways, and countries, like Australia, who participate in alliances with nuclear weapons states."
08.01.2022 On Friday a group of local young...and not so young 'Rainforest Rangers' got down and dirty in the rich, red volcanic soil of Huonbrook at the end of Wilsons Creek valley. Northern NSW. Not for them gnashing their teeth and cursing political inaction on Climate Change. They took the matter into their own hands: God helps those who help themselves. And planted scores of rainforest seedlings on the land and tore out half an acre of lantana to put in regen plantings. Taking the land back to what it was like pre-whitefellas.

06.01.2022 For some reason these Extras were pulled from my posting yesterday. No conspiracy theory...! (though I know they are running rampant in today's world. So one has to double check and keep checking one's 'fact' basis). Just my inept use of social media and pulling the video I posted because I thought I'd doubled up on it. Which had a chain reaction dropping it from Mullumbytes, Voice of Byron and Byron Community Board. Some people feel i've lost the plot from the 'good ole day...s' when I made films like Frontline, Chile Hasta Cuando? and Nicaragua No Pasaran! Falling prey to 'petty' conspiracy theories and anti science issues like 5G and compulsory vaccinations for the general populace. But no, I'd argue otherwise. All I want is for both sides of the argument to be put out there on the table and for communities like Mullum, Brunswick Heads, Ocean Shores, Byron, Bangalow, Suffolk etc...to be given the right to choose whether they have 5G installed on them or not. Whether we vaccinate our kids or not. Just to respectfully debate such crucial issues within our communities rather than having Big Brother Government telling us we're going to have it thrust on us whether we like it or not. Having followed the 5G issue and vaccination debates for some many years now, I think the Science and Medical health reports, peer reviewed scientific papers are not yet In, to rush headlong into something so vital to each child, each adult in our communities. With the old reassurances that don't wash these days anymore: "Trust us. We're the Government, we're Telstrar, we're Big Pharma...and we have your best interests and your kids health at heart. We'd never do anything to deliberately harm you...'

06.01.2022 I don't think Simon (Richardson), Sarah (Ndiaye), Paul (Spooner) or Michael (Lyons) are aware or even seriously consider the inter-generational despair, many moments of deep depression (yes, depression since we're talking about mental health in the time of Corona lockdown...) that their decision making at BSC has caused, continues to cause my generation who worked so hard for the last 4 decades to make Byron truly different to everywhere else. Jeannette (Martin) would unders...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Despite Telstrar's dirty tactics of trying to use Corona social distancing and brnging in the police to overule the wishes of Community yesterday to install 5G in Mullum, People Power prevailed. For the moment.
05.01.2022 Last night’s viewing of 4 Corners on the direction we are heading as the economic crisis becomes more evident for Australians.
04.01.2022 Richard Hil continues his analysis of neo liberalism and what its lead to in today's Australia - the devastation of our beautiful 'home', Planet Earth. Richard takes a glancing, passing blow at a three Australian women politicians and neo liberal champions - Premiers Gladys Berejiklian and Annastacia Palaszczuk and federal environment minister Sussan-Sacred-Sites-Blow-'em-to-Smithereens-Ley and explains why they can be morally duplicitous, say all the right things on the one hand about the Climate Crisis we all face and the Bushfires. But make cold, political judgements at the expense of millions of people to continue to export coal. Richard finishes this grab by talking about Trump and the real possibilities of civil war breaking out in the US should Trump lose the election.
03.01.2022 Right now, Veronica Koman is being penalised for supporting human rights in West Papua. The government of Indonesia has imposed a financial punishment upon Veronica Koman, an incredibly brave human rights defender, in a new attempt to pressure her into stopping her internationally recognised advocacy work in West Papua. After fabricating criminal charges, putting her on the national police wanted list, seeking an interpol Red Notice, and threatening to cancel her passport, now the government is forcing her to refund the value of a scholarship awarded in 2016. The amount she is required to pay is IDR 773,876,918 (~AUD 72,500).
03.01.2022 Rous County Council wants to flood the present Rocky Creek dam which provides water to the vast majority of us living in the Northern Rivers...and replace it with a dam three times bigger and four times as expensive. Its in keeping with the NSW State Govt's plan to cram as many people into our local towns and rural meadows which are already struggling with insufficient infrastructure in place to deal with current over-population migration out-of-the-cities trend to here. Of ...course flooding the current area for the dam will come at the expense of Nature and all the threatened and VERY threatened species which are in that area of rainforest at Dunoon, sitting on top of a sandstone plateau. When will we wake upto the fact that over 'Development' is in nobody's interests, not in the best interests of keeping something so precious these days - communities, rather than urban sprawl in ticky tacky boxes, albeit costing upwards to one million dollars each. Not in the interest of raising our kids in a rural environment where we honour Nature and the wildlife living therein which we all depend upon. Only the greedy landsharks stand to gain from this move by sub dividing more rural properties and cramming more people in here. Indebted for the rest of their lives to the banks. While there is not enough employment here to provide jobs for our youth or other skilled workers. We stopped Bentley CSG. We can damn the Dam. We must!
03.01.2022 Albeit at a Snail's pace, the Mitchell Rainforest Snail found at Butler Street Bypass STILL has a lot of lessons still to teach us in Byron Shire where we think we are all so environmentally conscious. (I got a call today from several activists in Mullum to come down and film the 5G protest at Mullum PO. Which BSC proudly announced they would not let be introduced into our community's.. However when I saw on live streaming plenty of people there with phones capturing it for ...social media, I thought it was more important to edit this clip and get it out which I shot with environmental activist and former BSCouncellor John Lazarus last Sunday at the Butler St Bypass. Because of what that tragic bulldozing of the largest known colony of Mitchell's Rainforest Snail on the planet represents in the life of our Community. I think its awfully important to not let our Byron Councillors and senior staff who are as guilty as the Councillors for not doing their job to protect the environment. And we in the community are guilty of that too in not blockading or stopping Butler Street reserve from being bulldozed. What they have destroyed in the Butler St littoral rainforest reserve, in the heart of downtown Byron is beyond tragedy or logic. Here John Lazarus tells us why we have to continue to hold our pseudo Green council and senior BSC staff accountable.
