24.01.2022 Vale Michael Gurr. Sad news today of the passing of Michael Gurr after a short illness, aged 55. Our condolences to his partner Brandon and to his family and fr...iends. We are grateful for his unforgettable contribution to Australian theatre. Michael's plays were performed by most of Australia’s leading theatre companies and he also wrote speeches for Victorian Labor leaders Steve Bracks and John Brumby. Michael wrote and directed for the theatre for more than 30 years. His plays include CRAZY BRAVE, JERUSALEM, and UNDERWEAR, PERFUME AND CRASH HELMET, all of which were directed by Bruce Myles and performed by Malthouse Theatre (previously Playbox). His 1994 play, SEX DIARY OF AN INFIDEL, toured nationally and was awarded both the Victorian and NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and eight Green Room Awards, including Best Play. His 2002 play,THE SIMPLE TRUTH, was produced by the Malthouse and Sydney’s Griffin Theatre, and has been performed in Britain and South Africa. While studying at the National Theatre Drama School in Melbourne, Michael sent several short plays to playwright Ray Lawler, author of SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL and then Literary Advisor at the Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC). Michael became Writer in Residence at the MTC in 1982, at the age of 20, the youngest person to hold the post. At the MTC his first plays, notably A Pair of Claws, were produced and his lifelong friendship with Ray Lawler began. In 1996 Michael began writing speeches for Victorian Labor leader John Brumby, and later worked for Steve Bracks during his time as Opposition Leader, then as Premier. Michael’s 2003 spoken narration, SOMETHING TO DECLARE, collected and told the stories of asylum seekers who journeyed to Australia, often to have their refugee claims rejected once they reached this country. It has been performed more than 100 times Australia-wide. Michael’s last play, MERCY, premiered in 2010 and his radio adaptation of Patrick White’s last novel, MEMOIRS OF MANY IN ONE, aired on ABC Radio in 2012. A 2006 memoir, DAYS LIKE THESE, published by Melbourne University Press, explored Michael’s two great passions: the theatre and politics.
