25.01.2022 Fabulous Florey Flora #7 Beautiful bearded irises making a great show after the last burst of sunny weather - they probably won't like the forecast cold weather this weekend, but will continue to bloom in the forecast sunny days to come.

25.01.2022 Bickfords products have been around in South Australia since 1874 - no wonder they have become such an important part of people's weekly shopping. Their great range of cordials includes blackcurrant (the blackcurrant we all grew up on), fruit juices, natural spring water and Iced Coffee classic to rival that other well-known brand. Look for Bickfords on your supermarket shelves.

24.01.2022 Very happy to present the Florey Music Award at Torrens Valley Christian School this morning before travelling to Parliament. Music is a big part of this wonderful and happy school community Well done to all involved for completing another successful school year!

24.01.2022 Hope Valley Bowling and Community Club Inc. had their season opening day on Sunday 20/9, and it was great to join the bowlers for their famous afternoon tea at the end of the day’s bowling. Being co-patron is one of my greatest pleasures and everyone finds the hospitality - and the bowls, too - at Hope Valley a constant reminder of the importance of community clubs. If you are looking for a club or want to come and try bowls - especially Night Owls - check on-line for details. I can guarantee a warm welcome when you make yourself known on your first visit

23.01.2022 Visited clipper ship City of Adelaide last week at it’s new home at Dock 2 at Pt Adelaide. Built in 1864, it made 23 return trips between London and Adelaide, bringing hundreds of settlers to the new colony of South Australia. A fundraising concert was held, featuring the wonderful Adelaide band ‘The Beggars’ (more info on them and future gigs at https://beggars.com.au ) - covering many Seekers hits and some of their own impressive original material. The Clipper volunteers (t...hanks to you all!) are always busy on their next project and the Information Centre and Gift Shop are open daily (weather permitting). It’s an amazing step back in time, with all the history and romance of the long season voyages of yesteryear. More info on www.cityofadelaide.org.au See more

23.01.2022 Susan Ryan, who died last weekend, was a trendsetting leader for women in Parliament and many other areas. Susan was the only woman in the Hawke Cabinet 1983-1988 and it was responsible for equal opportunity and anti-discrimination legislation. Her 1999 autobiography ‘Catching the Waves’ records an important period in political and social history in which Susan played an major part. Her later work in the area of age discrimination was also important and she will always be remembered as a champion for justice and equality.

21.01.2022 Red Cross have put out a call as they are in desperate need of blood and plasma. If you can make a donation anytime soon, please make a booking: https://www.donateblood.com.au/ Thanks go to all the many people who make regular donations.

21.01.2022 Joined Senator Rex Patrick today to stand with our constituents, members of the SA branch of the East Turkistan Australia Association, in support of their families and friends still living in their homeland. Just as with the suffrage movement, it is important to always look behind protest and activism to evaluate the reasons for the protest. That way you can better understand the issues - why and how people around the world are still struggling for democratic rights.

21.01.2022 Pleasure to visit Para Hills High on Wednesday for a Principal’s Tour of new STEM and refurbished learning areas - and to see the work of students of the Special School, who have been involved in hospitality training. In conjunction with local catering specialists Sferas on The Park, the beautifully presented tables were just the beginning of a special lunch. Congratulations to all involved - students and staff working together to make excellence a reality!

20.01.2022 Called by Paddy’s Market on Research Road at Pooraka early this morning - and discovered it’s open again tomorrow, for all of us who didn’t go away! Lots to see, so come on down and explore - something for everyone!

20.01.2022 I was represented and a wreath laid at the Salisbury RSL Remembrance Day ceremony, again held under restricted conditions. President Don Prider and his Team always do a great job, with an impressive RAAF flyover. Took the opportunity to drop off my contributions to the Farmer's Christmas Run to take place on 29 November. They are collecting donations until Friday 20th November.

18.01.2022 Power's out in parts of Florey... including our office. Expected restoration time is currently 1pm. Our office phones are down as a result, so message this page if you require assistance.

18.01.2022 Back to ‘sort of/new SA COVID normal’ Cotton masks definitely more comfortable - best to wear a mask indoors if social distancing not possible. Common sense in shops please - no need to hoard. If we all do our normal shop, there should be plenty for everyone.

16.01.2022 Fabulous Florey Flora #8 This beautiful bed of Kangaroo Paws is in full sun outside Valley View Secondary School’s admin office. Mine certainly don’t look this good - what is their secret?

16.01.2022 Today is World Humanitarian Day. Aid workers are here on the frontline with COVID-19 testing and care as well as workers currently assisting people in crisis in 63 countries where the situation has escalated due to the COVID-19 virus. There are so many inspiring people who are providing food, safe spaces for women and girls in lockdown, delivering babies, fighting locusts, running refugee camps and in countless other ways. For more information: https://www.un.org/en/observances/humanitarian-day

15.01.2022 We look forward to Book Week every year. Many schools are still going to hold dress-up parades and other activities, even if parents are no longer able to participate. Book Week’s theme this year is Curious Creatures, Wild Minds! Most children are both!! Here are the short-listed books that have been released in the last year (all great gift ideas for young people) - https://www.cbca.org.au/shortlist-2020

15.01.2022 Lots of dignitaries attended tonight’s opening of the new change rooms and upgraded facilities at the Hope Valley Sporting Club - home of The Demons. Over $900K has made the club more welcoming than ever for players, their families and friends. Congratulations and thanks to all involved - the club’s committee and also TTG Council and State Government - for the funding that made it happen.

15.01.2022 Bowls SA Super League action at Modbury Bowling Club last Friday evening 6th November from 6pm. First time a round has been played at Modbury - with the hope of more in future. Great atmosphere - as many people also attend for the meals served in the club rooms (check for take-away options). Plenty of good competition and company - worth a visit!! Check web for details! https://modburybowlingclub.com.au/

14.01.2022 Friday, 28 August is Daffodil Day. This annual Cancer Council Appeal gives hope by raising life-saving funds for world class cancer research. This year may feel a little different but the need for cancer research is still the same. You can look for daffodils in your supermarket or buy a virtual daffodil: https://www.daffodilday.com.au/

14.01.2022 Another fabulous range of local products, readily available at most supermarkets comes from the SA Icon and Treasure, Maggie Beer. From a non-alcoholic wine, pates and fruit pastes, stocks and verjuice (seen here as part of my weekend shop this weekend) - not to mention the icecream, there is something for everybody. Remember shifting just $10 of your weekly spend to Australian products makes a big difference to local jobs.

14.01.2022 WORLD TELEVISION DAY The number of homes with a TV is rising all over the world. It’s still the single largest source of news and entertainment which is accessed by the majority of people. Breaking news from reliable journalists keep us up to date with world events, discoveries in science, changes in politics and is broadcast in many languages to inform billions of people. We like to consider John Logie Baird as the inventor of television but it was actually a number of s...cientists and innovators who came up with this device. Baird also invented the first purely electronic colour television picture tube. The Logies are named after him. By the way - Logie was a noted resident of Hastings, the town SA born suffragist Muriel Matters called home after she left Adelaide and became part of the UK Suffrage Movement. She ran for the seat in 1924, and I often wonder if they knew each other. This photo appeared in The Observer on the 27th February 1926. Thanks to the State Library of South Australia. See more

12.01.2022 This week is National Science Week and when we think science we think STEM. The theme for 2020 is Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans. Congratulations to all the recipients of grants relating to science. Many of these recipients have developed some innovative and creative events which will be held online in line with these socially-distant times. Great to see programs encouraging young people to be actively interested in science as they will be the ones who will discover great things in the future. https://www.scienceweek.net.au/2020-south-australian-grant/

11.01.2022 Great to be at a calisthenics concert again, watching fabulously creative items performed by amazing Cali girls. The full house of family and friends really appreciating the chance to be here. Congratulations and thanks to all involved with BB Calisthenics and Dance Eisteddfod

09.01.2022 Long Tan Day 18 August commemorates a significant battle during the Vietnam War and has become Vietnam Veterans Day. A service is held annually at Henderson Square, Montague Farm Pooraka. Great to hear Army Band and see so many friends, here I’m with Margaret (wife of Delta Company veteran Alan) and guest speaker Bill (great speech, available soon on request). The Governor attended, accompanied by Salisbury Mayor Gillian, welcome to country by Uncle Frank. Wreaths laid, Ode a...nd Last Post. Some gave all - their sacrifice remembered. Those who returned still need to know their service gratefully acknowledged. Lest We Forget. See more

09.01.2022 Returning to they city, I laid a wreath at the Dardanelles Memorial on Kintore Avenue in memory of Muriel Matters’ brother, Charles, who died at Lone Pine in 1915.

08.01.2022 Tea Tree Gully RSL held the annual Remembrance Day service at the Memorial (Drive) Garden, under COVID restrictions, officiated by MC Wayne Langford and President Mal Fergusson. Capt. Adrian Hamond (TTG Modbury Salvation Army) led prayer and the wonderful TTG Redbacks Band provided the music and bugler, who played Last Post and Rouse - calls all soldiers knew and obeyed as they served. We Will Always Remember Them.

06.01.2022 Catching up today at Michael Sfera’s ‘Paradiso’ Cafe & Cocktail Bar on Civic Park, beside TTG Council Chambers. Great food, great value and service - let’s all get behind local businesses!

05.01.2022 Australian Product Guide # 6 What better product to taste test than chocolate, and locally we aren’t far from SA iconic brand Haighs. What to choose? Even with a free tasting every visit, it would take more than a year to sample just the staples - milk or dark. What’s your favourite Haighs?

05.01.2022 NAIDOC Week, normally held in June, has been postponed this year. Many of our aboriginal communities have been in lockdown as protection from COVID-19 and we are now able to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Gerard, Yalata and the APY Lands were the last three remote aboriginal communities in South Australia to reopen to the outside world back in July. What do aboriginal people want? Please read the Uluru Statement of the Heart which they came together to write - https://law.unimelb.edu.au//Uluru-Statement-from-the-Heart

04.01.2022 Today is #DogsInPoliticsDay, a day when dogs of all kinds and shapes are recognised for the important part they play in our lives. Whether companion pets or working dogs in too many areas to list, dogs rely on us for their care and well-being. Although ‘dogless’ now, I have had the pleasure to live with some wonderful and beloved pets among them my Dobermanns Dixie and Angel (1980s) and then with my Pharaoh Hounds Tutie and Genie (1990s). Unconditional love is surely the best kind!

03.01.2022 STATEMENT REGARDING THE SELECTION OF A NEW SPEAKER I have today decided to offer myself as a candidate for Speaker of the House of Assembly when the Parliament resumes on Tuesday. I offer myself as a truly Independent Speaker - Mother of the House, the People's Pick, not a Factional Favourite.... Voters deserve a Parliament focussed on their needs and, if elected, I will make decisions fairly and impartially. The choice of our next Speaker can only be a choice if there is more than 1 candidate and it is up to my colleagues in the Parliament knowing they can cast their vote according to their conscience.

03.01.2022 Tea Tree Gully Council held a citizenship ceremony at Sferas on Wednesday, 4 November. It was great to be among family and supporters of the new citizens from many countries now calling our area ‘home’. Even with COVID restrictions there was a good crowd, who heartily joined in singing the National anthem at the end - without the ‘usual’ choir of Councillors and State and Federal MPs!
