25.01.2022 Another incredible charity set to benefit from the auction of the Franklin Charity House is YouthCare Canberra. YouthCARE Canberra is managed by Communities at Work and offers a range of services to vulnerable young people aged 12-25 who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or in need of one-on-one intensive support. It is proposed that $60,000 will be used to employee a part-time, female outreach worker (salary, on-costs, car) to complement the existing full-time, male out...reach worker. Given the nature of the issues being confronted by many clients (drug/alcohol abuse, mental health issues, family breakdown, domestic violence), and their emotional fragility, a female worker will enhance the capacity of the program to meet the needs of a broader cross-section of clients and enable the current case load of 25 clients to be increased. A further $15,000 will be used to provide emergency assistance to meet immediate needs such as accommodation and medical services. It can take time to secure housing and in the meantime the provision of a powered camp site and camping equipment can be a valuable alternative. Many young people also require urgent medical or dental assistance but are unable to obtain immediate access to bulk billing services. Funds are therefore required to meet the cost of medical and dental appointments. An additional $15,000 will be used to purchase basic furniture and household goods to meet accommodation needs. While they frequently seek donations of second hand furniture, it is not always available or in a state of disrepair. Thank you YouthCare Canberra for your amazing support of the Canberra Community.

22.01.2022 Inanna is a homelessness agency who provides incredible support to those in need and the Franklin Charity House is proud to be able to support them with funds raised from its auction next year. Inanna specialises in crisis accommodation and support for women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Inanna propose to use project funds to address the issue of education support for homeless children. Children in crisis accommodation find it difficult to access e...ducation as other children do. Household routines often require that elder children care for younger siblings in the morning and family support structures to clothe feed and dispatch children to school do not exist. Children have little connection with formal education and minimal exposure to joys of learning, discovery, and achievement associated with education. Inanna propose to reconnect children in crisis and at risk with education. The project will hire a case manager to support a gradual re-entry into an education stream. The case worker will visit target families and initially conduct education activities on site in the local area with educational activities (stories, elementary lessons, activities) conducted in a small bus or similar transport vehicle. The case work worker will also supply access to books, materials, on site meals, and sports and recreational supplies. The program would aim to introduce children to a school-like learning environment, and a school-like discipline of classes and teacher pupil interaction. The ultimate goal would be to prepare children to enrol in a conventional school and participate in the full school curriculum.

06.01.2022 Energy Efficiency & Accessibility - FREE Info Session this Saturday by MBA's very own Jerry Howard When: Saturday 1st December 2012, 10:00am 1:00pm Where: Cnr Marie Pitt and Oodgeroo Avenue, Franklin Designing and building a house to accommodate for a large range of users is not difficult. Many features can be easily incorporated into your home if discussed early with your designer and builder.... It is not about institutionalising your home, far from it. It is about the discrete provision of features within and around your home so that you may never need to relocate. An accessible home has added value, is very sustainable and affordable. If you are looking for a new home or about to renovate the subject of energy efficiency always comes up. And yes, you quickly find out there are a lot of opinions out there, making it all very confusing for the beginner. You will also hear many reasons why there are mandatory regulations in support of energy efficiency policies but for your family the most important issue often overlooked is that of comfort. A well designed energy efficient home or extension to match your lifestyle is essential in today’s market. It is also about being responsible for your actions and caring for the environment.

03.01.2022 CBRE and Opteon are currently conducting valuations on the Franklin Charity House in preparation for the upcoming Auction on 2 March 2013. Thank you to both companies for your support.
02.01.2022 The Franklin Charity House will be auctioned in March 2013 with proceeds going to 5 local charities who support the homeless and disadvantaged. One of which is the YWCA of Canberra A very worthy recipient, the YWCA of Canberra is proposing to use the funds to contribute to the purchase and fit-out of two properties to meet the housing needs of elder single retired women who have insufficient superannuation savings to enter the rental market, but too much savings to be eligibl...e for public housing. While this group has not traditionally called on services, the demand for such supported rental accommodation in the ACT is growing with evidence suggesting that this will be a considerable issue in the ACT and across Australia. There is currently few services that respond to this need and programs are only now being developed to meet the expanding need in this area. Indeed, as the demographic profile changes to increase this cohort, the eligibility for public housing has tightened, and the accessibility of private rental has contracted. YWCA of Canberra will focus on properties with an inner central location, close to age appropriate amenities and with access to public transport. 80% of the funds will be allocated to the deposit component of a property purchase, with the balance to ‘make ready’ for occupancy and supply starter packs of essential consumables. Thank you to the YWCA of Canberra for your amazing work and contribution to our community.
01.01.2022 The Franklin Charity House is also proud to support Toora Women. Toora Women provide a range of accommodation and support services for single women, who are experiencing disadvantage in the ACT. Their approach to service delivery has always recognised the importance of addressing issues that impact on homelessness and disadvantage for women, particularly mental health and drug and alcohol issues. Toora Women propose to fund extended opening hours for a women’s shelter and ass...ociated crisis support services with project funding. Toora currently experiences a case load of 70 women per month who regularly access day refuge services, but the caseload is growing. The shelter provides shower and laundry services, free meals, food parcels, crisis clothing, and access to medical, dental, and mental health support; and is open in office hours during the week. With the project funding, the service will open later in the evenings, and provide a wider range of services, survival kits, and consumables for clients.
