24.01.2022 On this day in 1983, it's the very pointy end of the Franklin Blockade: A full-page colour ad featuring Peter Dombrovski’s now-famous photo of Rock Island Bend was run in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age with the caption: ‘Could you vote for a party that would destroy this?’. Strahan actions, along with actions at Kelly Basin security gate result in 22 arrests. The oldest blockader is arrested today she is 79.... The blockade was coming to a head and so is our crowd funder: Only 3 days to go and $15,000 from our stretch target. Plenty more great rewards available! https://www.pozible.com/p/dark-water-battle-on-the-franklin"
24.01.2022 Holy moly, today's tally has just passed $5,000... ... leaving us $3,000 left to raise in THE FINAL HOUR! https://www.pozible.com/p/dark-water-battle-on-the-franklin... I think we can, I think we can, I think we can...
24.01.2022 10 days left, and $23,000 to go! To all of our wonderful Pozible supporters, we've been completely blown away with your support so far, it's been amazing. It's given us the confidence to go for broke with our stretch goal.... We have $23,000 left to raise in the next 10 days to reach $70,000 so that we can complete the film in the next 12 months. So please share with a friend, and let's get this film made! Thank you! - Oliver, Chris, Kas, Claire and Annie
23.01.2022 Do any early TWS members remember this badge design? It was among Oliver’s Dad’s stuff. His mum Jill just gave it to him as a keepsake. It might be precursor to the TWS logo
23.01.2022 #Repost @nigel_davies_tas Was good to meet up with the #franklinrivermovie film crew today and relive some of our adventures in 1983, rafting the river and being arrested at the blockade. Look out for the film at the 2022 Melbourne Film Festival. #franklinriver #melbournefilmfestival
23.01.2022 Kas trying on a dry suit for the first time
20.01.2022 On this day in 1983: Plans for G-Day are announced. A large group of people return to the River Base Camp to test police and are evicted again. 5,000 attend the The Wilderness Society's ‘Stand up and be Counted’ rally in Melbourne.... The Wilderness Society
19.01.2022 Final crowdfunding tally: $67,425 on Pozible $55,627 on Documentary Australia Foundation = $123,052 crowd funding total.... That'll do pig, that'll do. Huge THANK YOU to everyone who pledged, you are simply amazing! We'll make you proud!
19.01.2022 we were amongst the 300 people for 300 swift parrots protest yesterday at Tasmania's parliament lawns. These supposedly protected birds have been seen amongst the trees in certain forestry coupes which should be enough to call off logging but logging has illegally gone ahead regardless. But there is something you can do. Check out Bob Brown Foundation's site for details https://www.bobbrown.org.au/ssparrots
19.01.2022 This week in 1983, rallies held across the country were attracting thousands - from both sides of the Franklin dam debate! An OTD (pro-dam) rally in Launceston attracts 1,000 people. The Wilderness Society holds an anti-dam rally in Devonport that attracts 2,000 people, and another 4,500 people march in Sydney.
19.01.2022 We're so grateful for Bob Brown's steadfast support of our project, extending back to when we first started out on this amazing adventure five years ago. A big theme in our film is the importance of embracing optimism to overcome pessimism and always be moving forward, inspired from Bob's fantastic book, 'Optimism: Reflections on a Life of Action' a cracking read! Bob thank you so much for the inspiration and the support, we wouldn't have been able to get this far without... you! So, can you support our crowdfunder like Bob has? We have just over $30,000 to go to meet our stretch goal: https://www.pozible.com/p/dark-water-battle-on-the-franklin
18.01.2022 Thanks Kokatat for hooking me (Oliver) up with an awesome dry suit. Dad certainly didn’t have this level of luxury on his trip, but having been in a steamer wetsuit for my paddle training the last few weekends I’m going to be really glad to not be sitting in a puddle of cold water in my boat. I’ll still probably be sitting in a puddle of cold water, but it’ll just be cold, not wet. I’ll be looking like Franklin River Rafting pro but can I paddle like one..
17.01.2022 Kas and Oliver got to hear this amazing artist, Emily Wurramara, at the Longhouse. Oliver had to buy the CD to play on the road @emilywurramara_
17.01.2022 Wow ... just passed $50k! $20k and days to go to achieve our stretch goal.
16.01.2022 On this day, 1983: while the nation listened with bated breath, the High Court of Australia deliberated long and hard over the case. 7 judges presided over whether the Federal Government could lawfully intervene to save the Franklin River 3 judges voted that the state had power to damn the river, 3 judges voted that the federal government could stop it. The last vote finally came .. a vote for the river!! The Gordon-below-Franklin dam cannot proceed! Australians glued to rad...io sets the nation over celebrate again: some dancing in airports, some in homes, some on the steps of the High Court itself Where were you when you heard the news? 13.01.2022 On this day in 1983: It's 3 days until the Federal Election, and with media attention on the Franklin dwindling, activists pull out all the stops for one last big day of action - this became known as G Day! (aka Green Day). Somehow a wilderness ally from within the HEC headquarters (now the Hobart City Council building) raises The Wilderness Society flag up the pole atop their building, for all Hobart to see, along with a ‘No Dams’ triangle. ... Then a truck pulls up on the street below and unloads a steel cage on the building’s front steps, the two protested ’prisoners’, around whom the cage was welded, symbolise those jailed in defence of the river. Over in the world heritage area at Mount McCutcheon a giant ‘No Dams’ is painted on the helipad by protesters. 200 Hydro workers menace 17-year-old Guy Grining* on the Denison Star at Strahan Wharf police refuse to assist. HEC workers blockade Greenie Acres along with members of the Organisation for Tasmanian Development (OTD) which was pro dam group formed 4 months prior by Robin Gray and Kelvin McCoy. They later surround the Strahan Information Centre (jeering and throwing peanuts and washing powder at blockaders who are gathered on the verandah, playing music and singing) and harass protesters at Kelly Basin security gate. On the Gordon River, a large regatta of river craft including a floating restaurant is part of the protest. 231 people are arrested by police (105 at Kelly Basin security gate, 7 south of the security gate, 35 at the southern end of Kelly Basin Road, 60 at Warner’s Landing, 1 at Sir John Falls, 5 at the dam site, 11 at Mount McCutcheon, 1 at Roaring Creek helipad, 3 at the lower Franklin drill site, and 3 in Hobart). *Big thanks to Guy and Troy Grinning who operate World Heritage Cruises, Strahan, Tasmania who have donated a number of now-sold-out cruise tickets to our crowd funder. PS - Four days and $16k to go on our crowd funder, with plenty more great rewards available: https://www.pozible.com/p/dark-water-battle-on-the-franklin

If we select it we will digitise your material and give you a copy for posterity.... 10.01.2022 Chris and Kas just returned from a 6-day reconnoitre of the Franklin River in preparation for our 12-day filming expedition in a week. The river is truely majestic. These snaps simply don't do it justice! We can only hope that our super talented crew with their fancy cinema cameras can capture some of the magic. Thanks to Eric, Johnny and Jordy from Franklin River Rafting for a great trip!
10.01.2022 On this day 4 March 1983: with Australia about to go to the polls, a meeting of blockade representatives in Strahan and other centres decide that the blockade has achieved all can to bring the river to the attention of the nation. However, a group of protesters split off from the coordinated action determined to stay and begin vigil. They plan to bear witness and document the continuing destruction as HEC machinery pushes deeper into the wilderness. These folks prepare to ro...ugh it as the days become colder and supplies to their camp become less reliable. Communication with the outside world will also be harder from now on as the Upriver Comms Centre returns to Strahan. The fate of the river remains in the balance. Alice Hungerford’s book ‘UpRiver: Untold Stories of the Franklin River activists’ tells more. She has made copies available as rewards in our crowdfunder - thanks Alice! There are 2 days to go, and only $9000 away from our crowdfunding stretch goal. Please share with your friends and help us get over the line. https://www.pozible.com/p/dark-water-battle-on-the-franklin
10.01.2022 $5,000 in 6 hours. We can do this! https://www.pozible.com/p/dark-water-battle-on-the-franklin
09.01.2022 On this day in '83: the Bobs win! Bob Hawke wins the Federal election and promises the Franklin Dam will not be built. Bob Brown and thousands of wilderness supporters celebrate too. The epic seven-year campaign to save the Franklin has come to a head. The blockade is officially called off. ... But the upriver mob dig in, maintaining a vigil in the Gordon River area to observe and report HEC activities. The fight is not quite over yet. What you were doing on this day?
08.01.2022 On this day 23 February 1983: 77 people were forcibly evicted from the River Base Camp area and brought to Strahan aboard the Challenger 1. An unknown number of protesters hide in the bush in preparations for G-Day and future blockade actions.
08.01.2022 It'll be well worth catching this virtual screening for 'Whatever Happened to Brenda Hean' ... a fantastic documentary produced by our friends.
05.01.2022 An amazing day with Bob Brown today, discussing the state of the world, the history of the Franklin campaign, spotting platypuses, and remembering Mike
