25.01.2022 The exploding money box, designed and built by the late Peter Walker got another run last night. It never ceases to surprise and entertain!

25.01.2022 Meet your host, Mr Kon Reitler

25.01.2022 Kon decided it was time for some plain speaking in the pub. These two blokes even brought their own planes. :D

24.01.2022 OK, the weather is crap. But The Franklin Tavern - Tasmania is warm and dry - as is its host Kon . Come on in from Wednesday to Sunday for a cider or a beer or a chat. Hes even got a bottle of wine somewhere. Or just sit by the log fire. And dont forget Dans Bar downstairs (who could forget Dans Bar! ) Come on down and enjoy a game of 8 Ball or a beer or a whatever. Get Dan to tell you a joke. ... OK, Dan doesnt tell jokes. But he can tell a good yarn See more

21.01.2022 You have no eye deer what happens at The Franklin Tavern on a wet Sunday evening. Bra-vo!

19.01.2022 This is a photo of our good friend and intrepid explorer Jan Zappner. This was taken in Franklin but Jan has just sent us a postcard from his trip to the wilds ...of Micronesia. He tells us he has been living with a remote tribe, deep in the jungle. This tribe took great delight in discovering a modern white man from the west who had absolutely no technology on him. No phone, no tablet, no computer, nothing. And they thoroughly enjoyed taking selfies with him on their mobile phones, iPads and digital cameras. The irony was not lost on Jan who didnt have the heart to tell them that in his backpack was his camera - a Kodak film camera. Jan is due back at the Franklin Tavern next week

18.01.2022 We had a lot of fun at the Tavern last night. Great little band playing, some Tasmanian cheese and crackers plus some tapas and delicious whiskey Christmas mince pies. Oh, and a roaring log fire. I didnt get a shot of the crowd but I got a shot of the band and Kons Christmas tree. [The flashing lights were courtesy of his son Roland]. Ive added a little Christmas piano to the video just for fun

18.01.2022 Well, maybe because of the glorious full moon,or maybe just because. Great night at The Franklin Tavern - Tasmania last night. Good crowd, with Jan on piano accompanied by Kath & Kim on vocals, several bassists on bush bass and a whole lot of old Franklin regulars we havent seen for a while. Lot of fun, dancing, singing, ....arguing. Three highlights: 1. Kon sitting in the dark determined to finish his crossword by moonlight in the sun room. 2. Barbaras dog Missy being chased around the pub by Dans cat Princess. 3. The return of Biker Als fish and chips, served up next to his Harley!

18.01.2022 Although this was shot at The Franklin Tavern - Tasmania, I can assure you we did not supply the food or wait staff! haha

17.01.2022 It is amazing the reach of some FB posts. I run The Franklin Tavern page and just noticed the stats on this photo. Noni Carr was a true child of the Huon and during her life touched so many lives. She still does. This image has gathered 363 likes to date, and reached 10,540 people. Go Noni!

17.01.2022 Always service with a smile at The Franklin Tavern - Tasmania The name is Waldorf. Kon Waldorf. Im both shaken and stirred.

17.01.2022 Dan Read is usually found behind the bar at Big Dans Bar in the Franklin Tavern. But the other day he stepped out to go for a sail on the old sailing ship the Yukon. Up and down the Huon River. He reckons it was awesome.

16.01.2022 Dr. John [retired anaesthetist] wore his new smoking jacket to Kon's little 78th birthday get together. Erhard seemed particularly impressed with it.

10.01.2022 Wonderful Christmas Eve Eve at the tavern last night. Jan playing the piano, Alistair of the Australian Defence Forces on trumpet, all joined by 15 of Jans Gypsy relatives. There was a very Eastern European theme to the evening with much hand clapping and foot stomping - and song lyrics no one else understood. There were even attempted Cossack dances. Kon lit candles throughout the bar for as he put it a Christmassy look, jah though the search for a piece of tinsel proved fruitless

09.01.2022 Wonderful night at the Tavern to farewell 2017 and welcome 2018. Great free barbie with rissoles, sausages, prawns, potato salad etc. Our resident backpackers [the United Nations of Franklin] thoroughly enjoyed the tucker. Then later in the evening we were joined by guests from Poland, France, New Zealnd and even Australia for some fun and laughter. Mike Peters played some rock and roll piano to bring in the new year and at one point every person in the tavern was dancing.... Great night with good people We wish you all a wonderful 2018 From Kon and everyone at the Franklin Tavern

08.01.2022 Lovely party for Kon. Lots of people, karaoke and great food

08.01.2022 Well what a wonderful day at the tavern. Around 45 people sat down to a fabulous roast followed by pavlova, apple crumble, and a huge amount of nibbles, cheeses, mince pies, fruit - you name it. Mike Peters played Christmas Carols over lunch, and during the afternoon no less than 5 other piano players sat in. Great day which kicked on till 9.30pm. Now thats a long lunch! Thank you Kon and Carmen for putting on this free spread for locals, backpackers, and random passersby with nowhere to go on Christmas Day

05.01.2022 I cant explain exactly what Jan is doing here - you kinda had to be there. Suffice to say : Jan is back

04.01.2022 We enjoyed tapas and a cheese platter courtesy of mine host Kon Reitler at the tavern last night. Jan Zappner played his old time piano and regaled the tourists with his travel stories. Jans yarns you might say [or not].

04.01.2022 Last night the Franklin Tavern catered for a visit from a group of Chinese students. Kon cooked up one of his famous salmon dishes and even hired Mike Peters to play and sing . It was quite a cross cultural event. After realising the students had not really heard any western music, Mike decided to give them a demonstration. Bus driver Robert took to the dance floor and there followed much dancing, improvised percussion playing, loud clapping along and a lot of laughter. The group also ventured down into Dans Bar. Which was an interesting interaction. It was a great night and quite a cultural exchange in the end. They were lovely people. Well done Kon and the Tavern

03.01.2022 New Years Eve at the Tavern Its a Barbie! Sausages etc. supplied. If youve got something more exotic bring it along ! Starts when you get here Lets bring in 2018 in true Franklin Tavern style

03.01.2022 Just noticed that there is a (sideways) shot of the tavern in the opening sequence of Rosehaven, the ABC comedy set in Tasmania. Blink and youll miss it

03.01.2022 Dan Read from Big Dans Bar has gone up north to see his folks for Christmas. Princess, his cat, is not happy about that. And she is very keen to tell anyone wholl listen

03.01.2022 This music video was partially filmed in The Franklin Tavern - Tasmania

01.01.2022 Well New Years Eve at the Tavern started slow. But then as often happens, it picked up. By midnight we had a fine selection of odd bods enjoying Kons inimitable humour and a lovely barbecue prepared by Carmen and some of the back packers. There was even rock and roll piano playing. Right on midnight [well near enough] came the moment wed all been waiting for: The Franklin Tavern New Years Eve Fireworks Unspectacular. And it was all wed hoped for. But then, just as the la...st starburst faded, from the darkness appeared a tall hooded stranger. He announced that hed come to revive an old Franklin tradition: the lighting of flares as a fireworks substitute. He then proceeded to run around the foreshore immersed in a bright orange glow. This startled two middle aged campers who were walking to the amenities block in their pajamas while brushing their teeth. Fair enough. From Kon and Dan: Happy New Year to all of our patrons!

01.01.2022 You know its a hot day in Franklin when Mr Jan Zappner of The Franklin Tavern - Tasmania fame takes to wind surfing on the Huon. I was pleased to see he has ...new swimmers, his old budgie smugglers were full of unfortuantely placed holes and tended to scare passing traffic. By the way, Jan is 77 years old and looks pretty good I reckon See more
