21.01.2022 Should I change my Research focus? Lots has changed following #Covid19 , and this is a conversation we have found ourselves having with peers, colleagues and friends. "Our old ways of working in teams in laboratories, fieldwork in public places, recruitment of participants, travelling between research sites, and running human trials are in most instances no longer feasible in the ‘new normal’"... This blog from the Happy Academic sheds some useful light on the matter. Should we all be shifting our focus to what are currently the major problems addressing society dealing with coronavirus and its impacts? 08.01.2022 Happy Birthday Rosalind Franklin! Today would have been the 100th birthday of Rosalind Franklin, the scientist our organisation Franklin Women is proudly named after. To celebrate the famous chemist, here are our favourite top 5 facts:... 1. Before DNA she studied holes in coal (and her PhD thesis was on this very topic!) 2. She captured the infamous photograph 51 (used in the Watson & Crick Nature publication revealing the helical structure of DNA )... not that she was credited for it. 3. Franklin loved travelling and backpacking, her favourite country was France. 4. After DNA her discoveries continued with tobacco viruses 5. She published 7 papers in 1956 and 6 in 1957, all whilst undergoing chemotherapy for #ovariancancer. She died in 1958. Perhaps she was not appreciated in her time, but the future won't forget her Happy birthday to this incredible #womeninSTEM #womeninstemm #stem #rosalindfranklin #franklinwomen #researcher #medical #health #genderequity #pioneer #chemist #women #steminist

05.01.2022 Unequal effects of #Covid19 on scientists. A recent study in NatureJournal has once again highlighted the negative impact of the pandemic on female scientists, in particular those "bench scientists" and those with young children. The study looked at responses from over 4,500 scientists across the US and Europe, here are the main findings:... a decline in total working hours, with the average dropping from 61hrs per week pre-pandemic to 54hrs. only 5% of scientists reported that they worked 42 h or less before the pandemic, this share increased nearly sixfold to 30% during the pandemic. fields that are less equipment-intensivesuch as mathematics, statistics, computer science and economicsreported the lowest declines in research time. scientists with at least one child 5 years old or younger experienced a 17% larger decline in research time. the impact is most pronounced for female scientists with young dependents.
