25.01.2022 In view of the upcoming early commencement next week we thought we would broach the subject of change and transition to better prepare ourselves for this. Although we know that change is an inevitable, necessary and often positive part of life, many of us still find this overwhelming and stressful. It is important that students learn how to cope and adapt to change to maintain optimal physical health and mental wellbeing. Signs that we are not coping may look like this: con...stantly feeling under pressure or that they are being weighed down by others feeling lost and unsure of oneself feeling anxious, irritable, moody or upset much of the time exhaustion not wanting to engage in social activities or attending school difficulty sleeping or restless sleep. So how do we address this? We suggest focusing on understanding the change, what it means to us and why it appears stressful - let’s call this understanding the problem! Make a list of the potential positive outcomes or things associated with the change. New friendships perhaps, being in a class of like-minded people, and having new teachers and subjects. Address the stressful situation by having a plan. For example, if a person is feeling isolated or lonely, we suggest exploring the option to join a club or starting a new hobby may be a good way to meet new people. This may become more likely as restrictions ease. Other general relaxation techniques, such as breathing, and mindfulness exercises are effective tools in managing and overcoming stress. We urge students to self-refer to The Wellbeing team and allow us to help them cope with change and transition References: https://schools.au.reachout.com/arti/life-stage-transitions

24.01.2022 VOTE FOR US!!! The LEAD Semester 1 class are very excited to have been selected as a finalist in the Videos for Change 2020 Competition for their Chill Out & Look About Video. Videos for Change empowers high school students to create one-minute videos to raise awareness and inspire change on the social issues they are passionate about. In 2020, they asked the question, "What does 'community' mean in a crisis?" They received hundreds of videos from across Australia, sharing ...the youth perspective on issues such as, COVID-19, social cohesion, mental health, the environment, bullying and more. This years' videos powerfully demonstrate how important it is for young people's voices to be heard. The Frankston High School video created by our LEAD Class, is a tribute to Dylan Briggs who we tragically lost earlier this year in a cycling accident. The aim of this video is to encourage cyclists and drivers to be more aware of the importance of road safety through the ‘Chill out and look about’ campaign that has been promoted worldwide to honour the memory of Dylan. We are in the People’s choice category and need your help to please vote for us. The link is http://bit.ly/ChillOutAndLookAboutVideosForChange Voting is now open now and closes at 11.59pm on Monday, 2 November. Many thanks on behalf of the LEAD students and Frankston High School. 14.01.2022 They say every journey starts with the first step but for former FHS student Nathan Harris-Dent and Blake Dobles there will be quite a few thousand more before they reach their final destination. These two Melbourne mates are planning a ‘short’ walk (aptly named Ks for Days) from Melbourne to Brisbane to have an adventure while raising funds and awareness for a small local charity, Dogs for Kids. Dogs for Kids raises and trains Assistance and Therapy dogs for children who f...ace physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges. Blake and I have similar views on why we’re doing the walk, Nathan explained. One is we simply want to get out there and have an adventure; challenge ourselves, get out of our comfort zone. We’re excited for how much we’ll grow and what we’ll learn on the trip, and where we might be at the end of it, character wise. Simply put, to become better people is right at the top of the list. Secondly my family has been heavily involved supporting Dogs for Kids and we want to do our part to help the charity as it’s been doing it tough during the pandemic. For the last few months the mates have kept themselves busy with loads of practice walks (within their 5km then 25km radius), sourcing sponsors, mapping out their itinerary and practicing their online blogging skills for their daily updates along the way. Dogs for Kids Board Member Kim Michod said the charity will be supporting the boys in any way possible to ensure their adventure is a great success and will be covering their trials, tribulations, surprises and revelations each step of the way via the wonders of social media. As a charity we find it so inspiring when young people put their hands up to raise money and awareness for causes such as ours, she said. We’re behind them 100% and can’t wait to watch them (in the virtual world) reach their destination in Brisbane. The FHS community is very proud of Nathan and Blake. Anyone interested can follow Nathan and Blake via their Ks for Days facebook page https://www.mycause.com.au/page/230179/ks-for-days. 08.01.2022 WELLBEING MESSAGE: EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Effective communication benefits everyone, but it’s especially important when thinking about mental health and wellbeing. When you communicate effectively, you build a shared understanding and a partnership with the other person. We have listed here just a few of the ‘obvious’ benefits: Improved relationships: Honest, respectful communication builds trust, which, in turn, allows people to be open about their thoughts and feelings.... A better understanding of what’s happening at home: If there’s an issue, you’re well placed to learn how it might affect the child or young person, how the young person or family would like you to manage the issue, or what supports might be helpful and appropriate. Families understand the learning environment: Families are better able to understand the child or young person’s strengths and can work with you to address any challenges. You model positive social interactions: This is an important part of children and young people’s social development. We will explore more next week, and in the meantime we urge students wishing to liaise with Wellbeing to email us or just pop in and see us. See more

07.01.2022 Happiness is letting go of what you assume your life is supposed to be like right now, and sincerely appreciating it for everything it is. So, RELAX. You are enough. You have enough. You do enough. Inhale, exhale let go, and just live right now in the moment.... If you can fix a problem, fix it. If you can’t, then accept it and change your thoughts about it. When you are lost in worry, it is easy to mistake your worries for reality, instead of recognizing that they are just thoughts. Most of the time the problem is not the problemthe problem is the incredible amount of over-thinking and over-analyzing you’re doing with the problem. Pause, and breathe, again. We realise how much nonsense we’ve wasted time on. So, just do your best right now to rise above the petty drama that doesn’t really matter. See more

07.01.2022 CONDFIDENCE AND BELIEVING IN ONESELF - 31 Days of Self Love. Being critical of ourselves is often embedded in our beliefs. Ask yourself: -Am I open to change? -Who are my role models?... -How do I view and treat others? -Who are the people I gravitate to? -Am I kind to myself? -How often do I compliment myself for a job well done? -Do I like the ‘person’ that I am? Learning how to believe in yourself is critical to creating the life you desire. If you wish to achieve a high level of confidence, you need to take the steps to be more confident. Realise it starts with you: -Face your fears -Remember past successes -Get inspired -Create goals -Learn a new skill -Learn to respect yourself -Never give up
