22.01.2022 We remember them Today is Remembrance Day when we traditionally observe a minute’s silence at 11am if our work allows. We do this in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. We remember particularly the nurses, doctors, orderlies, allied and mental health professionals who have served our country, including many among the more than 100,000 Australian service personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left g...row old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." See more

01.01.2022 Antimicrobial Awareness Week World Antimicrobial Awareness Week aims to increase public awareness of the threat of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of efforts to improve antimicrobial use in all healthcare settings. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care promotes Antibiotic Awareness Week annually... From this year onwards on the dates of November 18-24thannually, it will now be known as ‘Antimicrobial Awareness Week’, which aims to highlight the need to include other medications that treat bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites There are many resources available on the ACSQHC website. Healthscope advocates to promote the appropriate and safe prescribing of all antimicrobials in line with the current version of eTg (The Therapeutic Guidelines) which are available on all Healthscope computers for all staff and VMOs. This is just one step to avoid the spread and further emergence of drug-resistant infections. Healthscope Infection Prevention Teams promote an increased awareness of antimicrobial resistance to their staff, VMOs, patients and consumers by spreading the word on what we can do, and what resources we have to keep patients and the wider community safer. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites resist the effects of medications, making common infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. Our Antimicrobial Stewardship Committees and Working parties across Healthscope sites are one example of how we work together to ensure we are meeting the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard for Preventing and Controlling Healthcare-Associated Infections,. The Standard includes Antimicrobial Stewardship programs that among other things review antimicrobial prescribing and use, and use surveillance data on antimicrobial resistance and use this to support appropriate prescribing. Nurses in particular can be aware of these issues, and be part of the solutions by simple effective steps like promoting the IV to oral route for patients receiving antibiotics. Healthscope is increasingly contributing data through a number of sites for external benchmarking egThe National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey (NAPS) and to National Antimicrobial Utilisation Surveillance Program,(NAUSP) which are just two ways we are adding to the overall Australian picture and through them greater safety and quality in all healthcare settings. The World Antimicrobial Awareness Week slogan for 2020 is "Antimicrobials: handle with care" and the theme for the health sector is United to preserve antimicrobials". https://www.who.int//world-antimicrobial-awareness-week-20
