24.01.2022 As there has not been any further updates on the review process of our Great Sandy Marine Park since the last meeting we will postpone tomorrow nights meeting of the FCFA. We will meet again on Wednesday the 19th of May at 7pm at the Hervey Bay RSL in one of the upstairs meeting rooms - unless there are any significant updates prior. We appreciate your continued support. ... Regards Scott Mitchell Chairman FCFA

24.01.2022 Did you know, thanks to the introduction of the Mackay Net Free Zone, overall legal catch sizes in the St Helens to Cape Hillsborough area have increased by 41% in the last 5 years? Let's hope Meaghan Scanlon - Member for Gaven and the Annastacia Palaszczuk MP government finally complete the review of our Great Sandy Marine Park this year and REMOVE the RED-CROSS HATCHING - which by default will make the critical Yellow Conservation Zones Net Free as well .... 24.01.2022 And this is why our own Great Sandy Marine Park NEEDS to have the Red-Cross hatched Anomaly - The Designated Sandy Area REMOVED with out exception and STOP commercial netting in what should be true Yellow Conservation Zones under the current full-term review! With tourism representing 45% of Belize’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 70% of all tourists visit marine destinations, a healthy marine environment is critical to the country’s economic future. Likewise, Belize’s ...vibrant commercial fishery is directly dependent on a healthy marine environment. The Coalition for Sustainable Fisheries is a group of conservation organizations, commercial fishermen, tourism representatives and sports fishing enthusiasts with a simple goal: to ban all gillnets in Belizean waters. https://www.bangillnetsbelize.com/

21.01.2022 Another though provoking article worth your time from Starlo's Fishotopia - we also agree we are at a pivotal period for recreational fishing across Australia and it’s time our sector becomes United and more engaged to protect our natural resources and habitat - which will internal improve our fish stocks...

19.01.2022 Congratulations to Meagan Scanlon on becoming our new Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef 2020. We also congratulate Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Labor Government for being re-elected along with Bruce Saunders for retaining the Maryborough seat, Adrian Tantari for winning Hervey Bay and Tom Smith for winning Bundaberg. A lot of recreational fishers and those who care for our Great Sandy Marine Park which extends from Baffle Creek in the North to Tin Can ...Bay in the South backed Labor again at this election as recreational fishing plays a vital role across the Wide Bay and Fraser Coast both socially and economically. We look forward to working with Meagan Scanlon and her department towards completing the full term review of the Great Sandy Marine Park as soon as possible. Regards Scott Mitchell Chairman Fraser Coast Fishing Alliance Inc.

17.01.2022 A thought provoking article from Steve Starling that supports our case to ensure our Great Sandy Marine Park is corrected under the current review and the Red-Cross hatched - Designated Sandy Area is removed to STOP commercial netting in what should be true Yellow Conservation Park Zones ! The bottom line is this: as anglers, we must, first and foremost, be genuine conservationists and wear that badge with pride. (Note carefully that I wrote conservationists, not preservationists. There’s a huge difference, ...

16.01.2022 Great Sandy Marine Park - Protect Our Region’s, Ocean Jewel! The Queensland Government is reviewing the rules for the Great Sandy Marine Park - our playground for fishing, boating, and the key to our coast’s nature tourism future. Our stunning coastline and its whales, dolphins, dugongs, seabirds, and fish draw tourists from around Australia and the world. But just 4% of the marine park actually gives our wildlife the protection they need.... We want the Queensland government to:- Remove commercial gillnets from conservation areas so our fish stocks can recover and to protect threatened species like turtles and dugong. Increase marine national park zones to protect habitats and let our fish and wildlife thrive. Please email Leeanne Enoch MP @ [email protected] & Annastacia Palaszczuk MP @ [email protected] NOW and let them know the anomaly that is the Designated Great Sandy Area must be removed without exception under the current full-term review of our Great Sandy Marine Park due to be finalised by the end of this year! 14.01.2022 A recent article from a Commercial Fisher in Mackay - Courtesy of The dailymercury.com.au Quote " It’s just rape and pillage basically. The stocks don’t have the chance to recover. " Why this CQ fisherman welcomes new regulations... TIMOTHY COX 17th Nov 2020 5:00 PM Subscriber only A SAINT Lawrence fisherman says widespread doom and gloom attitudes towards new State Government fishing regulations are unfounded. Government regulations announced at the end of September after two years of consultation have begun to be rolled out. Ben Coyne has fished for eight years; he learnt the trade from his father, a fisherman of 40 years. They’re bringing in a quota system, he said. If you’re lucky they’ll just cut it in half and that’s the quota you’re given. Basically there are too many fishermen on the water, commercial and recreational. But, he said, It’s not all doom and gloom reforms. He said too many fishermen and unsustainable fishing methods damaged species in Central Queensland, such as mud crab, barramundi, and king salmon. Fishermen generally migrate from area to area, Mr Coyne said. We take the cream off an area and then we go to another area so there’s always a healthy population. That’s what it used to be like when my father was doing it. Nowadays there are just so many of us, everyone’s running over each other’s paths. It’s just rape and pillage basically. The stocks don’t have the chance to recover. He said the regulations would force fishermen to be more conscientious and, like any other primary producers, put money back into the ecosystems from which they gained. He said both recreational and commercial fishermen would benefit from decreased competition on the water and the replenishment of fish populations, since good quality, fresh fish would become more readily available. We think the consumer’s going to benefit from this, Mr Coyne said. It’ll keep everyone happy because there’s a lot more recreational fishing than there ever was, and [commercially,] the demand for fresh fish and mud crab is not as high as it used to be because a lot are catching their own.

11.01.2022 Let’s hope that our newly re-elected government now commit to completing the full term review of our Great Sandy Marine Park and remove the red-cross hatched designated Great Sandy Area to provide adequate protection for our Yellow Conservation zone areas...

03.01.2022 What about the Great Sandy Marine park that allows commercial netting to continue in what have been declared Yellow Conservation Zones! Let's hope this is "Corrected" under the current full-term review due to be completed this year- as it's already 4 years overdue ..... 01.01.2022 These fish are definitely Trachinotus family (permit) from somewhere in Australia and would certainly be worth more than $19 a kilo in Recreational fishing spend... You have to ask if species like this should be "Recreational Only"... These are netted locally throughout our Great Sandy Marine Park in what "should be" True Yellow Conservation Zones - let's hope that the anomaly that is the "Designated Sandy Area ( Red Cross Hatching ) is REMOVED without exception under the current full-term review and STOP commercial netting in what should be conservation zones! #fishingfrasercoast #maximumeconomicyield #marinepark #bioshere #ramsar #seagrass #kgari #fraserisland #seabirds #dugong #turtle #thisisqueensland
