22.01.2022 In honour of Remembrance Day, we take a look into the past of the SS Maheno. Built in Scotland in 1905, the luxury cruise ship was one of the first turbine-driven steamers and one of the fastest ships of her time. The Maheno was commissioned as a hospital ship in Europe during World War I, also serving in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Later, while being towed to Japan for scrapping, the Maheno met an unseasonal cyclone and was washed ashore on the eastern coast of Fraser Isl...and, on July 8th, 1935. This historic hull is now a significant landmark along 75 Mile Beach. We will remember them. You can visit the SS Maheno on our 1 and 2-day tours, where our local guides can provide additional historic insight.

There is a bushfire at the northern end of Fraser Island, currently affecting access to some of the camping sites. However, this fire is being closely monitored by Queensland Parks & Wildlife Services and is a safe distance from the island’s iconic attractions. The fire currently poses no threat and all tours are running to the regular island i...tineraries. There is some smoke coverage (depending on the wind direction on the day) so if you have any respiratory or health concerns we recommend checking with our reservations team. Guest safety is our priority and we will advise guests of any further updates that affect tours on the island.
