25.01.2022 Business and Farm Mediation and Succession: I am involved, as a mediator, with business and farm mediation and/or succession. Especially succession planning with farming businesses that have not yet thought through a plan to move on with their life and maybe hand over the reins to other family members. I am a Nationally Accredited Mediator and would like to assist others in what can be a very difficult and stressful time. It is an impartial, informal way to discuss difficult ...issues with a future based focus. 1. Farm and business Succession 2. Farm debt mediation 3. Workplace mediation 4. General business/client mediation "What is done cannot be undone, but what happens next is your choice"
23.01.2022 Why is farm succession so difficult for farming families and how can mediation and succession planning help? Succession planning is always a difficult process and made more difficult when all the assets are tied up in the business like farming. As we get older our focus changes as does our needs and aspirations. Many farming units are family based so some of the questions are: Where do you see yourself in 5 or even 10 years time? The answer to this will be varied depending t...o the stage of life people are up to. What do you want from this business? What plans do you have to achieve this? Once the parents step sideways, are there any family members wanting to continue? How can the parents step sideways without affecting the business? Are there family members who would like dollars instead of asset how will that affect the business? Succession is about making a plan. This is a long term project which periodically revisits the aspirations of all those involved and the plan keeps evolving to accommodate as much as possible. It requires financial and fiscal management which is in line with the succession plan ageed upon by the family. The hardest part for rural enterprises is keeping the fiscal line as seasons and commodity price fluctuations make it difficult for funds to be diverted to other strategies apart from the basic running of the farm. Initially a family would ask an independent person to facilitate the meetings such as a mediator. Mediators are not allied with any financial, legal or accounting organizations and so offer their services with no strings attached. See more

10.01.2022 Being from a rural background and still involved with the land and all its dimensions, I understand the dynamics of young ideas vs. old traditions. I understand the everyday concept of farming and the everyday worries, as I am one. I would like to help. We, the rural race, feel fiercely independent but have little independence. We are controlled by freight constraints, price setting and are at the determination of the abattoirs, feedlots, grain corps, wool corps and mostly we are controlled by the weather. The one thing we can control is what happens to our business and when and how and who it will be handed to. The more time you give this process the more control you will have over the outcomes.
