25.01.2022 The Gabba is poised to be announced as the venue to host the 2020 AFL Grand Final!! How very, very exciting. Annastacia Palaszczuk MP great job advocating for the Gabba. Wouldnt it be even better to be able to announce that the whole of the Go Print site is destined to become a public park to facilitate the Gabbas World class event space!! #weloveouropenspaces #aflgrandfinal

25.01.2022 The land-e-scape conference has had some great content over the last few days. Hearing from Victor Steffensen, author of Fire Country is a great way to round off the week. Wisdom, knowledge and insight being shared by the bucketload. Love and learn the land Swipe to check out Tessa introducing Victor to the live conference audience. Honoured and privileged to be moderating such an important session. #landescape2020 #Aila #firesticks #viewfromamysdesk

24.01.2022 This article by Sophie Black @theguardian vividly portrays life in Melbourne over the last few weeks. Amongst the confronting reality is a description highlighting the importance of public open spaces and the challenges facing their use and management. "There are no empty spaces... everyone is vying for a patch of their own remoteness. We all funnel along the designated walking paths of our local parks, the bay, the creeks, the Yarra, any blessed body of water. But there are too many of us. We negotiate who should cross a bridge first. Little pods of people walk together as if travelling in invisible shuttles, barely acknowledging each other. Only dogs breach the boundaries". #weloveouropenspaces

24.01.2022 Fancy that, the kids football game today is at coorparoo, and just happens to be on an oval we did refirbishment for. Looks awesome! It used to look a lot like a kid jumping on a water bed!

23.01.2022 We were happy to attend a scaled-down opening for one of our recent active transport projects with Logan City Council and The Landscape Construction Company. The new parkland connects Carol Ave to Laurinda Crescent with a direct shared path creating a valuable walking and cycling link through the suburb of Springwood. Mature trees were kept and some new stunners planted meaning more great shade and habitat creation. Add in some public art and unique seating options and both a journey and destination have been created #designingplacesforpeople #fredstlandscapearchitecture #subtropicaldesign #activetransport

23.01.2022 A familiar view for us in the office. We love it when the Urban Sketchers Brisbane come to visit our neighbourhood #thegabba #urbansketchersbrisbane #fredst

22.01.2022 Doorstep Truck Farm delivers on tasty veg, perfect for growing in our subtropical climes. Question is, does anyone actually eat choko? #theaustralianwomensweeklygreenhouse #subtropicalgardening

21.01.2022 oooooooo.......it's the National Awards time!! Australian Institute of Landscape Architects - AILA #AILANationalAwards #AILA #weloveouropenspaces #doitlessshit

21.01.2022 Dont be fooled by the pretty flowers - if you see these in your garden, its time to pull them out and pop them in your bin. As tempting as it is to compost them, a lot of weed species seeds still survive a good compost roasting! Learn more about weed species and their impact via the post below

21.01.2022 Thanks for following us on the adventures 2019 held for our little team. We hope you all get a chance to do the things that recharge you over the break and look forward to working with you in 2020! Ps - well be back in the office January 6th

21.01.2022 Looking for a winter flowering plant for your garden? Hardenbergias bring an awesome pop of purple around this time of year and provide food for pollinators in the low season. The true form is a twining vine, however shrubbing cultivars are also available #hardenbergiaviolacea #aussienative #winterflowering #beautifulburbs

21.01.2022 The AILA Qld Landscape Architecture nominee announcements are currently underway via zoom. It is a slightly more subdued occasion than normal, but the projects weve seen so far look amazing and deserve a huge round of virtual applause! Fred St are celebrating a nomination for our Flower St project in the Small Projects category. Congratulations to all of the other nominees and lets hope we can celebrate the awards in person! #ailaqldawards #ailaqld

20.01.2022 Heading to a local school today to talk the year 4 kids about materials and erosion. This is a real world project the school is undertaking, so it will be great to get the insight of the people who use the space every day. Among the questions being asked is, "Is it fun in your space?" - a super important design element here! I wonder if there will be any natural landscape architects in the mix?! #nationalscienceweek2020 #designingplacesforpeople

19.01.2022 Meet the Fred St crew - Tessa, Tom, Amy and Maddy - out on site today. #fredst

18.01.2022 The power of outdoor learning can't be underestimated and this article gives a first hand account of how it has transformed a local primary school. We've been lucky to work with quite a few schools this year, helping them provide usable, creative and engaging spaces for their students. Nature play, productive gardens, accessible playgrounds, outdoor classrooms, shaded spaces full of biodiversity and or all of these elements broaden both play time and learning outcomes for st...udents. Has your local school been doing things differently lately when it comes to their outdoor spaces? We'd love to hear about it! #fredst #designingplacesforpeople #otudooreducation #natureplay https://www.abc.net.au//outdoor-lessons-at-primar/12848326

18.01.2022 So much love for the natural light in our office #thegabba

18.01.2022 Some hump day inspiration for you all - Leptospermums are putting on a show right now with their gorgeous flowers. These beauties were snapped in a few of our our gardens: 1. Alicia Rose (bright pink) 2. Pink Cascade (light pink) 3. Snow in Summer (white)... #aussienatives #floweringnow #inourgarden

18.01.2022 For anyone who lives in the same neighbourhood as Fred St - this one is for you! Get those typing fingers primed and let the state government know important green space, active transport and walkability is for our inner city communities. Make sure our new facilities are well connected to our community! #thegabbaward #weloveouropenspace

18.01.2022 If you're on the northside or up for a bit of an adventure - the Moreton Bay region has some great playgrounds to check out. The new water play and adventure playground at The Mill is getting great reviews and the always awesome Pine Rivers Park is just around the corner - one of Tessa's projects from a previous life time! 18.01.2022 Who else has noticed how valued and important our public open spaces have become? They offer a chance for us to get active, connect with nature and be immersed in public life. With many people living alone or in small households, spending time in public space also allows connection to both community and place. With isolation measures relaxing on the weekend, allowing adventures further afield - our beaches, parks and public spaces will provide a much needed change of scenery.... The green infrastructure of our neighbourhoods and cities is a vital element in the mix of what makes places liveable and we all have the power to create more of it in our local communities! Our challenge to you this weekend? Take a photo while you are out and about and tag your local member to tell them what you want to see more of or protect! Use the tag #weloveouropenspace and share whats happening in your neighbourhood on the socials. #fredst #designingplacesforpeople #lovewhereyoulive #ailaqld #landscapearchitecture #walkability #urbandesign

16.01.2022 Yes, definitely Christmas!

15.01.2022 Local councillor for The Gabba, Jonothan Sri is hosting this online even tomorrow night, exploring the needs of the local community in light of the opportunities created by the Cross River Rail project. Fred St director Tessa will be speaking, along with Adrian Pisarski from National Shelter Australia and state government candidate Amy MacMahon. Theres plenty to consider and this event aims to make sure everyone is informed and engaged #weloveouropenspaces #getinvolved #thegabba

14.01.2022 In case you were ever wondering about what Landscape Architects do - this emag of 2020 AILA QLD award winners shows the breadth and scope of our profession #landscapearchitecture #ailaqld

13.01.2022 Tessa spoke a few weeks back to a group of engaged locals about the future of the old GoPrint site and its evolution under the Cross River Rail project. You can watch the entire discussion at the Youttube link below. This is a keystone project for The Gabba that offers so much potential for the future of the neighbourhood. There are competing demands, that only a well-thought out and participatory master planning process can address. What do you think? Have you had your sa...y? Be the squeaky wheel folks! #haveyoursay #weloveouropenspaces #thegabba #thegabbaward #crossriverail

11.01.2022 If anyone stumbles on one of these street signs lying around, you know where to send it Have a great weekend folks!

11.01.2022 Anyone else spend time in the garden on the weekend? Sustain is an Australian organisation supporting a transition to sustainable food systems. Their Pandemic Gardening Survey found some fascinating figures in regards to how important our gardens are - "Nearly 20% of respondents said they could not have made it through the pandemic without their garden. Another 62% said the garden meant a great deal to them during the pandemic".... Full report can be found at the link below https://sustain.org.au/pr/pandemic-gardening-survey-report/

11.01.2022 Something close to our hearts - happy National Eucalypt Day!

10.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week! The perfect time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. There is heaps and heaps of things that you can do. Take a look at https://lnkd.in/gmyJ2z5 One thing that we are implementing at FRED St is to introduce country into our address. Our studio is on Turrbal and Yuggera country, so this will now appear on our postal address. A little thing, that can remind us of the long and rich hist...ory of Indigenous culture linked to the land we're sitting in. As an extension to that, where the information is available, we'll be adding the country to the address of the projects sites we're working on. Where do you live? #NAIDOCWeek2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe

09.01.2022 Citizen science alert! UQ are asking locals to send in a soil sample to help in the search for new medicines. Hit the link below to find out more "More than half of all antibiotics available worldwide have been developed from microbes found in soil and nature, and Queensland is one of the most biodiverse environments in the world, spanning beaches, rainforests, wetlands and deserts. This vast, untapped landscape is ripe for the discovery of microbes that could be developed into new antibiotics, anti-fungals and other medicines". https://imb.uq.edu.au/soilsforscience/

09.01.2022 We've been a little quiet between posts. Not because we've been busy celebrating World Landscape Architect's Month, but because we've been living it! Things are pumping in the Fred St office keeping this bunch super busy #WorldLandscapeArchitectureMonth #fredst #designingplacesforpeople

07.01.2022 A touch of colour on a dreary day. This Gabba intersection has been brightened recently by some verge planting and the plants are loving the rain and heat! #fredst #thegabba #gabbabusinessassociation #vergeplanting

07.01.2022 #weloveouropenspaces We should never accept development in our urban centres that do not contribute positively to common, quality outdoor space. https://www.abc.net.au//thousands-of-melburnians-/12547050

02.01.2022 Look at this opshop score! A complete set of dubiously informative, blast from the past gardening cards, circa 1970s. Watch this space for instalments from categories such as "The Nostalgic Ferns", "Welcome Strangers" and this showstopper - "Doorstep Truck Farm". $3 well spent #womensweeklygreenhouse #opshophaul
