25.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE-WE ARE OPEN AS USUAL SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY! The safety, health and wellbeing of our patients, carers and staff is of utmost importance. We continue to follow the advice from the Department of Health ensuring all high traffic surfaces and equipment are sanitised after each patient. Hand sanitiser is available for patient use at our front desk. Our podiatrists continue to sanitise their hands and wear gloves and masks for each patient.... We are also practising social distancing in our waiting room by reducing the number of chairs for patients and placing them 1.5 m apart. Please may we ask that all patients and carers who feel unwell or who have recently travelled overseas, cancel or re-book their appointment until they self-isolate for 14 days or are given the all clear. These are uncertain times for everyone but if we all work together to help STOP the spread of this virus, we will come out on the other side! Thank you for your continued support and our thoughts are with all those who are affected by this crisis! Please call us on (02) 9680 3646 if you would like to book an appointment. 23.01.2022 THERAPEUTIC LOWER LIMB MASSAGE (this blog was written by our podiatrist, Svetla Wilmott and also appears on our website) Unfortunately, our feet are probably one of the last parts of our bodies we pay much attention to! We take our feet for granted, until they let us know they are hurting.... Our feet are punished when we try to squeeze them into ill-fitting shoes, stand on them all day or walk on hard, flat surfaces for long periods of time. Massage is a form of healing and relaxation for sore muscles. Not only does it make you feel good but it has significant therapeutic benefits. Massage helps to warm tissues, increases your blood circulation and assists ridding the body of metabolic waste. A foot massage may actually release endorphins as well as reduce stress hormones. Some benefits of lower leg massage: -Increased blood circulation -Carries off metabolic waste -Warm tissues and helps to relax and loosen sore leg muscles -Reduces pain and improves range of motion -Reduces scar tissue To book a Therapeutic Lower Limb Massage appointment with me, Svetla or if you require additional information, please call us on (02) 9680 3646. 23.01.2022 INGROWN TOENAILS (this blog was written by our podiatrist, Svetla Wilmott and also appears on our website) What is an ingrown toenail? An ingrown toenail occurs when your nail curves and starts growing into your skin along the side of the toe. Ingrown toenails are common and most likely affect the big toe but any toenail can become ingrown.... Why do you get ingrown toenails? Wearing tight shoes, cutting your toenails incorrectly or trauma to your toenail such as dropping something heavy on your toe or kicking an object, could be one of the reasons for developing this common problem. What are the symptoms? Pain on touch, pressure or movement, redness and swelling are common symptoms of ingrown toenails. In some cases, an ingrown toenail can become infected. It is therefore important to have the ingrown nail treated once these signs become evident. What are the treatments? In some cases, cutting the toenail, soaking your feet in a warm salty, bath or topical antibiotic ointment from your GP can help to resolve the problem. But, if symptoms persist for more than two weeks or if an infection develops, then you should contact a podiatrist for professional treatment. People with diabetes or circulation problems should see a podiatrist as soon as they develop any symptoms since they are at greater risk for developing complications. If you would like more information or if you would like to book an appointment, please call us on (02) 9680 3646. Visit us on: www.sydneypodiatry.com.au #ingrowntoenails #freeyourfeetpodiatry

18.01.2022 INJECTION THERAPY (post written by our podiatrist, Franc Pirc) Did you know that Free Your Feet Podiatry offers injection therapies for a number of foot conditions? The most common foot conditions that we may use injection therapy for are Achilles Tendinopathy, Plantar Fasciosis, Morton’s Neuroma, Bursitis and Sinus Tarsitis but this is by no means an exhaustive list. Injections can be used for pain within joints, around weakened ligaments or at the insertions of tendons o...nto bones. When most people think of injections used for musculoskeletal complaints they immediately think of corticosteroid injections. This therapy can be useful but most people are put off by the fact that steroids are known to weaken soft tissues. There are other agents that can be injected to good effect without the side effects. Prolotherapy is such a treatment. Prolotherapy involves injecting an irritant at the site of pain to elicit an inflammatory response that is thought to promote healing. Agents that are commonly injected in prolotherapy are hyperosmolar dextrose (a sugar), glycerine, lidocaine ( a commonly used local anaesthetic), phenol and sodium morrhuate ( a derivative of cod liver oil extract). The injections are typically performed two weeks apart for a minimum of 3 sessions but can take place over several months if needs be. Another useful injection treatment is hydrodilatation therapy. This involves injecting inert agents such as saline solution to expand and separate soft tissues where there might be adhesion of the tissues causing discomfort. The above treatments can be beneficial when traditional first phase treatments such as eccentric stretching, footwear, PRICE and orthotics have had limited success. Please do not hesitate to contact us on (02) 9680 3646 if you feel you might be a candidate for any of the above treatments or if you would like to book in an appointment. www.sydneypodiatry.com.au

16.01.2022 MEET OUR PODIATRIST, FRANC PIRC Free Your Feet Podiatry Pty Ltd operates under the excellent clinical care of the Podiatric Director, Franc Pirc. Franc is a graduate of the University of East London, and holds a BSc (Honours) in Podiatric Medicine. Franc’s journey to clinical foot care took a rather circumspect route. This developed into producing bespoke orthotics to support clients’ foot health. Franc soon discovered his real passion lay in the clinical area of foot care, and he completed his degree in Podiatric Medicine. Franc has run his own clinic in Wimbledon, London, as well as worked at a private practice in Surrey. With his background, bespoke orthotics are a specialist interest of Franc’s. 07.01.2022 FLAT FEET IN CHILDREN (this blog was written by our podiatrist, Svetla Wilmott and also appears on our website) Many parents are concerned about their children’s feet and frequently ask podiatrists why their child has flat feet and what they should do about it?... Young children (up to 8 years of age), often have flat feet and this is considered a normal part of their development and should improve as they grow and get older. By the age of 8, muscles are stronger, arches have developed, feet become less flexible and flat feet should improve. In children, flat foot pain is treated to ease the symptoms. We can offer advice on footwear, stretching exercises and orthoses. If there is no pain in the feet but there are some changes to the shape of the foot, close monitoring of your child’s foot will be required. If you ever have concerns about your child’s flat feet or if the flat feet cause pain or developmental delays, then you should seek professional advice from one of our podiatrists. We will assess your child’s feet and discuss possible treatment options with you to put your mind at ease. Call us on (02) 9680 3646 to book an appointment to have your child’s feet assessed. 01.01.2022 DRY NEEDLING (this blog was written by our podiatrist, Svetla Wilmott and also appears on our website) Dry Needling is an increasingly popular treatment method being used by a variety of practitioners including podiatrists and other Allied Health professionals.... Dry needling is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles and is often confused with the traditional Chinese medicine technique of acupuncture as both methods use the same sterile filament needles. So, what is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture you may ask? Acupuncture is a complimentary medical practice originating in China many years ago. It is based on the belief that health is determined by a balanced flow of chi, the vital life energy present in all living organisms. By inserting very fine needles at specific points, the practitioner can redirect and reposition the flow of energy (chi) for the purpose of relieving pain or to help treat various health conditions. (livescience.com) Dry needling is a technique to treat myofascial trigger points (hyper-irritable, taut bands of muscle) causing shortening, tightening or spasm of the tissue, which can lead to postural and chronic pain problems. The American Physical Therapy Association defines dry needling as a technique used to treat dysfunctional skeletal muscle and connective tissue, minimise peripheral pain and improve structural or functional damage. There are many conditions where podiatrists can use a dry needling technique. These include heel pain, ankle/leg pain, Achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, knee and hip pain, calf tightness and cramping, plantar fasciitis, neuromas as well as osteoarthritis and peripheral neuropathy. To learn more about the Dry Needling technique or to book an appointment with Svetla, please call us on (02) 9680 3646.
