25.01.2022 As the warm weather fast approaches so do the flies. Blind Helen finds it difficult to keep flies away from her eyes but with her new mask the problem is solved. At first I thought she may object to having the straps around her face but as always Helen takes everything in her stride and moves about without any problems. Blind Helen is the most gentle soul you will ever meet and always happy for treats such as weetbix or raisin bread. ... The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. ~ Helen Keller Freedom Hill Sanctuary ~ Where Life Begins

21.01.2022 Whitney has gone on a play date/sleep over to see how she likes her new home. A friend of mine who has adopted 5 of our sheep before found herself with a young month old lamb and he has no friends so in comes Whitney to save the day. Whitney is very much the independent gal, she was never a mummies girl so best suited for these circumstances.... I can’t wait to see how she settles into her new home. We will miss this sassy girl Freedom Hill Sanctuary ~ Where Life Begins

19.01.2022 These hens are incredibly lucky, because they’ve been rescued and given a second chance at life at Freedom Hill Sanctuary. Whilst around 12 million hens considered spent by Australia’s Egg industry every year are clearly not so fortunate (1) However ALL egg farms involve suffering and horrific deaths of chickens, regardless of whether they’re labelled Free Range, Barn Laid, Cage, or Pastured.... Chickens in the egg industry begin their lives in the hatcheries where statistically 50% of all chicks hatched are obviously males, and because they don’t lay eggs, they’re considered a useless waste product. So for every hen in ANY type of egg farm, there was an innocent male chick the industry was slaughtered when only hours old by being gassed or ground up alive (1) These rescued hens are know as ISA Browns. Which surprisingly is not actually the name of their breed, it’s the name of the brand who selectively bred them -Institut de Selection Animale (ISA) Their bodies have been genetically mutated via selective breeding (2) to lay around 300+ eggs a year. Which is a far cry from their ancestors, Red Jungle Fowl, who still exist in the wild and only lay around 12 eggs annually. As you can imagine, this incessant laying rate takes a huge painful toll on these poor hen’s bodies. Then, once these hens start to slow from this unnaturally high laying rate, before they’re 18 months old the egg industry considers them spent and slaughters them too (3) The allowable KILLING METHODS FOR SPENT LAYING HENS are horrifically laid out in detail in Australian Egg Corporation’s guide in section 4 of their Industry Best Practice guide (4) and disturbingly include: - Maceration of live or unconscious poultry - Various types of foam and foam application The document also discusses the costs of the various methods of disposal of these spent hens, because after all, these farms are businesses aiming to maximise profit not seeking the most humane way possible. These hens are all different, with their own personal likes/dislikes and quirky personalities, just like you and I. They are all unique individuals and deserve to be treated as so much more than just disposable egg laying machines. A lifespan of 18 months just so humans can have an egg, really Kindness Cost Nothing. 19.01.2022 On the fifth day of our Valentine’s Day countdown we are sharing our love with our bovine friends. Here are some facts about cows: Cows are highly social and don’t like to be alone. A cow will usually only isolate herself if she is about to give birth or if she is sick. Cows can see almost 360 degrees so they can watch for predators from almost all angles.... Cows form strong emotional bonds with their calves and both Mum and calf will experience severe distress when they are separated. The love chemical oxytocin is released for both mother and calf when a calf drinks from their mother. If given the opportunity, cows will hide their calves to keep them safe while they graze. There are approximately 1.4 million cows in the dairy industry in Australia. Freedom Hill Sanctuary is home to many rescued cows and steers, like blind Helen. With your generous support, we can continue to rescue and provide sanctuary for cows like Helen. Start your weekend off right by donating to Freedom Hill Sanctuary today. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. Simply head to our website to share the love today. www.freedomhill.com.au Helen #freedomhillsanctuary #valentinesday #flowersofig #flowercrown #flowersofinstagram #animalsanctuary #animalrescue #cutegoats #goatsifig #goatsofinstagram #animalsofinstram #animallover #cowsofinstagram #sheepofinstagram #vegan #veg #veganfood #veganrecipes #vegancommunity #vegansofinstagram #vegetarian #veganuary #veganlife #farm #farmstay #animalplanet #animalphotography #instagood #southaustralia #australia

12.01.2022 Today was a very special day for Miss Holly Pig Remember a couple of weeks ago I mentioned Holly’s new sponsor Grace. Holly showed off with eating, then swimming and digging in her mud, then digging in dirt.... She then got cranky and went to bed Pictured: Grace & Holly BFF Holly, Grace, Milly and me. 08.01.2022 With shattered hearts we say goodbye to our little girl Ollie. Yesterday Ollie was jumping around full of beans, eating and running around between showers of hail. Her tiny body found this morning near her shed, no signs of what may have taken this precious girl. Death is never easy but an unexplained even harder to cope with. Your bundle of energy and excitement for life is a memory never forgotten.... R.I.P little angel you are forever in our hearts, I'm sorry your time was not longer. 07.01.2022 Lily has grown into a fine young lady. Her start to life was tough with being orphaned at birth she was found curled up and given up hope after crows had pecked her frail body in several places. We thought she had been through the worse after picking her up and promising it’s all over. At only weeks old Lily suffered a seizure and lost the use of her back left leg.... After many vets visits with splints and bandaging Lily can walk again. She does drag her foot when walking but is a small disability in the big picture. 06.01.2022 Was this ... Take 1 Take 2 Take 3 No it was Take 4, ... but today Jess and Clancy moved over to the new property. A journey we have taken with Jess very slowly allowing her time in the other 3 loadings, showing her gentleness, trust and kindness. A little girl that is incredibly smart and only wanting to please has finally made her gallant move. We are so proud of her. We did it ‘The Gentle Way’, a move of ease, stress free and finally at home with the rest of the big horses. Clancy of course marched on like he does it every day of the week. 04.01.2022 Sweet Esme was rescued back in 2012 and has lived her life at Freedom Hill Sanctuary free of fear and neglect. We are unsure how old Esme is prior to her rescue but tell tale signs are showing, age is taking it's toll. Esme has had arthritis in her front shoulder for a while now and it's never given her too much grief but we had to call the vet yesterday as her back leg is starting to seize with arthritis. This little lady has always been the party goat, for Lynn's 1st Birthd...ay Esme was invited to the shed with tables and food for all the animals, she was the rowdy one standing on the table and eating everyone else's weetbix and carrots. Esme will no longer be able to run free with the other goats and is now in a comfortable space to roam but not over do it.
