24.01.2022 My last two classes at New Energy Yoga, Winchester tomorrow before emigrating with my husband, to Australia. I'm looking forward to seeing those of you who can make it tomorrow for either 13:00 - Total Body Stretch or 18:30 - Hatha I am going to miss the lovely souls here, thank you to every single one of you for your support and encouragement.

23.01.2022 I've been following a rower called Sam Loch on Instagram for a while now. He's an absolute beast, I mean that in the nicest possible way - look him up on Wikipedia, Olympian, Rower, multiple record holder and an Aussie! I started following him when I heard he was working towards breaking Indoor Rowing records on the Concept2 ergometer. Rowing was my sport and I know how much that darn ergometer hurts so I was interested to see what he was up to. He regularly posts startling photos of the weight bars he's lifting and the splits he's pulling on the rowing machine. And then he posts this and blows my mind! 23.01.2022 It's a beautiful day to walk barefoot outside! Grounding is a topic that was introduced in my training last week. Many of our modern diseases are caused by inflammation - think about heart disease and arthritis for starters. Inflammation is caused by free radicals. We can neutralise free radicals by grounding on the earth. For a much better explanation, the 15' video below is worth viewing. It's not always practical to be barefoot but it's possible to buy Earthing Bands that... plug into the earth socket of an electrical plug - provided your home has an earthing rod and you're not above the 3rd floor, this will do the same job Some of the students on the course with aches and pains took Earthing bands home and plugged in overnight. I was sceptical but they reported results the next morning. An ex Aussie Army guy with messed up ankles was pain free and a massage therapist with grinding and discomfort in her knuckles and wrists was similarly without the noises and discomfort - there were more success stories but I particularly remembered those two. 22.01.2022 This week my lessons at Yoga One Nine will focus on heart opening. Here’s the opportunity to dedicate your practice to someone who needs your love and compassion. Heart opening leads us into deeper back bends - opening the front of the body requires us to be open to vulnerability whilst being courageous. The heart is fascinating, the level of electrical and muscular activity here is startling, breathing with intention and attention to the heart centre as we practice.

13.01.2022 Tension in the neck and shoulders can be caused by forward-oriented activities like driving or working at a desk but psychological tension can manifest here too. "The weight of the world on your shoulders" is an apt phrase, this is where we feel burden and responsibility. We often forget to do the simple shoulder exercises and yet apart from helping with tension, a good range of motion in the shoulders is required to support our inversion and back bending practice. Join me next week at Yoga One Nine, set your burden down for a while and release the tension.

12.01.2022 It’s all about hips from me this week, all six degrees of freedom - flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal and external rotation. Our habit of sitting in chairs with our legs together does us no favours - the hip flexor muscles (iliopsoas) become short and tight and the muscles in the butt (gluteus maximus) become long and weak. Eventually, tightness in the hips can present as back or knee issues. The hips can trap emotional tension too, releasing the grip of a ne...gative emotion in a yoga class can be a wonderful victory. Let it go! Have a cry or laugh out loud - however that beastie comes out - let it go! 09.01.2022 My theme for the week commencing 27th August is detoxification. During the flow classes we will use twists and rotations, anchoring different parts of the body to deliver torque into the tissues. The twists create a wringing and then a soaking effect on the internal organs. As we release each pose, fresh blood is delivered into the tissues. Our pranayama focus will be Ujjayi breath (aka Victorious or oceanic breath), it warms and detoxifies the body as we practice. I am cover...ing Ruth's Yin classes this week. Keeping with the theme of detoxification we will use a sequence of poses to stimulate and energise the Liver, Gall Bladder and Kidney Meridian lines. Detoxification extends beyond the physical/ physiological and our practice this week offers the opportunity to let go of the thoughts, emotions and patterns of behaviour that no longer serve us. As in a garden, when we water the flowers of loving kindness and compassion in ourselves and each other, we take energy away from the weeds of anger, jealousy and misperception. 08.01.2022 My classes this week take a forward fold focus. On a physical level relieving tension in the spine and neck, stretching into the hamstrings, hips and calves, and strengthening the thighs and knees. Meditative and introspective, forward folds reduce stress, anxiety, depression and fatigue. This practice will calm the mind and soothe the nerves supporting our spiritual theme, mindfulness. This quote from Thích Nht Hnh, The Miracle of Mindfulness illustrates beautifully: If w...hile washing dishes, we think only of the cup of tea that awaits us, thus hurrying to get the dishes out of the way as if they were a nuisance, then we are not "washing the dishes to wash the dishes." What's more, we are not alive during the time we are washing the dishes. In fact we are completely incapable of realizing the miracle of life while standing at the sink. If we can't wash the dishes, the chances are we won't be able to drink our tea either. While drinking the cup of tea, we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the cup in our hands.
