24.01.2022 Some generous curves reach out into the landscape and embrace this addition to a traditionally-styled rural house on the Bellarine. Early sketch design stage and we reckon this one will be pretty special.
24.01.2022 This Barwon Heads renovation project included a brand new kitchen at the heart of the busy family home. The custom cabinets made from painted v-groove boards lend a beachy vibe, while the fluted hardwood panelling from Porta Timber adds a warm and textural touch.
21.01.2022 Almost ready to start construction on this modern Indian restaurant in the new Kingston precinct in Ocean Grove. Let’s face it: your average takeaway Indian place can be pretty generic and uninspiring, so we’ve tried to liven things up with bold use of colour, along with some sculptural walls of stacked concrete masonry. It’s all in aid of creating a welcoming and visually engaging place to visit and enjoy the fresh, local dishes that will be on offer. Can’t wait for opening night!
21.01.2022 We recently did an interview with Jenny Brown from Domain about the design influences of our Bellarine Hillside House, and it's appeared in today's issue. Check out our media page for the link: https://www.freehandprojects.com.au/media
21.01.2022 We grew up on the coast, and draw on our local knowledge to create homes that feel comfortable in our unique setting. We love to use humble materials that age well and show the passage of time like the landscape. Project: 13th Beach Courtyard House Builder: Archihouse Constructions
16.01.2022 Concrete steps form the edge to the lower lawn at our Bellarine Hillside House. Cast in-situ, they are a comfortable place to perch and take in the incredible sunset views across Lake Connewarre.
16.01.2022 Magic hour at our Bellarine Hillside House. Creating a robust masonry base for the house was a key design strategy. It helps to ground the house to the site, and forms a strong connection to the land. Continuing the structural framework of glue-laminated beams beyond the interior extends the living areas out into the landscape, and invites any gathering out onto the north facing patio. It gives the house that crucial connection between inside and out, which is a key consideration in much of our residential work. Photographer: Steph McGlenchy Photography
16.01.2022 Thanks for the feature Home Adore! https://homeadore.com//bellarine-hillside-house-by-freeha/
14.01.2022 Our clients for this addition to a weatherboard cottage in Thornbury needed a dedicated library for their extensive collection of books and vinyl. We set aside a whole wall of the new dining room, and worked with the joiner to come up with a custom solution using black formply that finds a home for everything and forms a beautiful and functional background to everyday life. 13.01.2022 Flashback Friday to this Barwon Heads project which saw us add a new kitchen / dining / living area to a modest beach house. We ended up lining the wall where the extension meets the old house in vertical v-groove boards, and the client selected this deep, cool grey as the paint colour. It’s ended up making a calm and solid backdrop for the warmer tones and textures of the new work, and we’ve gone on to employ the same technique in a couple of subsequent projects. Just anothe...r example of how a collaborative approach can take the design to new places, and achieve wonderful results. Builder: Cromer Builders Photographer: Will Watt
12.01.2022 How’s your International Cat Day going? Our Hiro (Freehand Projects chief rat-catcher) seems pretty oblivious. Upcyled blanket cushion courtesy of @ogalterations
11.01.2022 Another piece online about our Bellarine Hillside House, this time in Designhunter with an emphasis on the environmental features of our design. http://www.designhunter.net/sustainable-architecture-with-/
11.01.2022 Progress shots from this new house in Ocean Grove. Cladding is just about complete, and we’re nearly at lock-up stage. Loving how the winter sun gets deep into the plan. Builder: @cromerbuilders @ Ocean Grove, Victoria
11.01.2022 Our pair of Presidents Avenue townhouses in Ocean Grove kind of look like they’re leaning back and enjoying the sunshine.
10.01.2022 The native landscaping around our Bellarine Hillside House is starting to thrive, and the endangered yellow gums are looking healthier than ever. We took our cues for the materials palette for this house from their pale, luminous bark and delicate white blossom.
10.01.2022 The lovely people over at The Design Files have done a feature on our Bellarine Hillside House which is getting a bit of love at the moment. The house was something of a labour of love for our practice, and we’re pretty happy with the outcome. Unique sites like this on the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast deserve a design response that goes beyond the standard one-size-fits-all approach, and we relish working with clients who are seeking a design approach that expands conventional expectations. If you think Freehand Projects might be a good fit for your dream coastal project, get in touch for a chat about how we can help. https://thedesignfiles.net//architecture-freehand-project/
09.01.2022 Like much of our work, this addition in Barwon Heads was an exercise in contrast. The whitewashed masonry piers are built from recycled bricks, and their rustic, timeless character sits hard up against the crisp timber detailing of the new windows. We find that the balance between rough/smooth, hard/soft, handcrafted/machine made is key to drawing out the inherent character of materials, and we try to include as many of these moments as we can in every project. 09.01.2022 Having worked on the design of some of Melbourne’s best known and well loved restaurants, bars and cafes, we have a passion for and deep knowledge of all aspects of hospitality design. It’s a delicate balance between efficient functionality, complex services, lighting and acoustics, all the while striving to achieve a warm, inviting and above all memorable experience for the public. We love working on these projects and are always up for expanding our architectural lan...guage with new techniques and materials (or sometimes old ones used in unexpected ways). From a tiny wine bar or cellar-door to a complete pub fit-out, we’re up for the challenge. Project: Las Chicas Cafe Photo: Las Chicas
08.01.2022 Thanks gt magazine for the lovely piece this weekend. When you take a step back and look with a suitably long lens, our story actually does sound pretty interesting!

07.01.2022 Frame is taking shape at this new Ocean Grove house. Love the look of the timber in the afternoon sun.
06.01.2022 We just had the very talented Steph McGlenchy do a photo shoot at Little Raaja in Ocean Grove, and we reckon she’s captured the depth of colour in this rich and textured interior really well. Looking forward to sharing more of the highlights in the coming days.
06.01.2022 We sited our Bellarine Hillside House within a remnant stand of ancient Yellow Gums overlooking Lake Connewarre, and the late afternoon sun filters through the foliage, creating ever changing patterns in the interior. This window seat projects out over the landscape at tree canopy level, and is a perfect spot to curl up by the Cheminees Philippe Fireplaces Australia fireplace and enjoy the incredible sunsets. 04.01.2022 A kitchen update in this classic 1970’s home includes an in-situ concrete bench, black ply joinery and handmade Spanish splashback tiles.
02.01.2022 A new screen of rough-sawn hardwood battens on this Barwon Heads addition gives glimpses of the spaces within, and filters the evening light.
