25.01.2022 Benny has been practising his ‘following’ skills He’s getting much better and is feeling really good this morning

25.01.2022 When you are just learning to spronk and haven’t quite got your technique worked out yet Benny

24.01.2022 I took some Vitamin and Mineral loose lick out to top up Anwar and Ashas bowl in the paddock today but they both decided they wanted it straight out of bucket

23.01.2022 Today was the last day eating hay for a while for the main FreeHearts herd as we moved them up the road into their new paddock of fresh grass. This is Alices’ first time moving paddocks without the assistance of Twinkle her seeing eye goat. Even with Twinkles help Alice can be a challenge to move because if she gets in any way stressed or confused her neurological symptoms get worse immediately and she will just start turning in a small circle to the left so if she doesn’t wa...lk through the gate with the other cows, sometimes it can take nearly an hour to help her get through. It was a bit of a team effort with myself, Jules, Pete, Cheryl and my mum all having a job to do but everything went pretty smoothly. Alice is almost completely blind with the exception of being able to sense large shapes that move, she doesn’t know what they are just that they are there and then she uses her sense of smell and hearing to try to understand. You can see as she is walking up the road that due to her neurological condition she keeps wanting to turn left which is why I have to try to keep speaking to her and then she sort of tries to follow the sound of my voice. Everyone was VERY happy to see the lush green grass

23.01.2022 If ever you see a sheep laying down with its legs out straight and slightly in the air it is most likely ‘Cast’ which means it is stuck and needs help to get up again. The FREEHEARTS sheep are carrying a lot of wool, we have had an unusually cold and wet spring so we have postponed shearing until now ( Shearer is booked for next week ) Sheep who are pregnant or just very fat or who have a lot of wool are more at risk of getting cast and as you can see it can happen on a slig...ht dip in the ground. Cast sheep can either be completely still or struggling, usually once they are still for a long period of time it’s because they are exhausted from struggling to get up, sometimes they can even look dead and be laying on their back with all four feet in the air, if you are not sure please check. It is imperative they are helped up in to their feet straight away to avoid bloat and nerve paralysis. Wilma had not been cast for long as Jules was only out in the paddock with them 2 hours ago and they were all frolicking around. It is distressing for any animal not to be able to get to its feet and to be stuck but especially for prey animals like sheep for whom fleeing from danger is their only defence. Wilma was very happy to be back up on her feet

23.01.2022 The wind tends to give Animals ‘The Crazy’s’ I was just heading out to top up the horses minerals when Brian suddenly started doing crazy laps of the backyard, Enjoy

22.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon in the very strong winds We are grateful no Animals were in the paddock and that it missed the fences by a few inches

22.01.2022 We have Mumma cat ! We can’t post any photos etc at this stage as she is frightened and I don’t want her to be more frightened or to hurt herself but she is secured and will be off to the vet tomorrow xx

21.01.2022 We took the 9 kittens out to Just Cats last week, it is always sad saying goodbye especially with the 3 Flu babies who were with us for a week. I spoke to Rachel from Just Cats today and all 9 are doing really well The 6 garage kittens are in Foster Care together and will be available for adoption once they are a little older and have been desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.... The 3 Flu babies ( Thatcher, Meredith and Alastair ) are recovering well in Quarantine and will also be available for adoption when they are a little older and have had all their vet work done. If you are looking for a new Cat or Kitten please support your local rescue and adopt don’t shop. Just Cats is in the Launceston area North East AnimalSanctuary is out here near us in the North East and both are over capacity with Cats and Kittens

20.01.2022 Rest In Peace our Sweet Gentle SPARKY Sparky was rescued as a 3 day old Bobby Calf back in Winter of 2013, just days before he was scheduled to go on the calf truck to the abattoir.... He lived here at FREEHEARTS for the first few years of his life before moving out to Ed and Patricia’s place along with his friends Spirit, Luther, Mandela ( R.I.P ) and later on, Max and Bobby. These lucky babies have had the run of a beautiful 25 acre property and lived a life most cows never get a chance to. Ed noticed Sparky had a distended abdomen a couple of days ago and called the vet out, his initial examination was normal so fluid was taken from his abdomen which had some blood in it. Sparky was given pain relief and Ed was instructed to monitor him which he did. Sparky was completely normal the evening before his passing, eating drinking and moving around with his herd as he always does but was found passed away the next morning Thank You so much to Susan Kenna who has sponsored Sparky since he was 1 year old At Peace now beautiful boy xx

18.01.2022 Cedric and Hector eagerly awaiting their dinner

18.01.2022 We had the usual and the unusual on our walk the other day

18.01.2022 UPDATE 7am. We just went and checked the trap but sadly no mumma cat so we will continue to set it and hopefully we will catch her soon. Last night I was driving back from seeing Arden and Irish in the dark and about 3kms from home I saw tiny little things moving on the road ahead, as I got closer and slowed down I made out two very little feral kittens eating a dead possum who had been hit by a car ... I stopped the car and got out and they only scurried off as I got closer and then disappeared into the long thick roadside grass. I moved the dead possum into the grass to keep the kittens from going back onto the road and came home to get a trap even though we knew they were probably too light to set it off even if they went into it. My son Ruben and I went back to set the trap and when we got there both kittens had dragged the possums body back into the middle of the road and once again didn’t move until we approached on foot but this time the mother cat was with them and all 3 split up and went in different directions. Ruben and I decided to try to find the kittens, as we were searching around we heard one of them calling out to the mother cat, I followed the sound and located one crouched down hiding in the grass and decided to try to catch him, I was able to scuff him and obviously he was terrified and tried his best to escape my grasp using his very sharp little claws. We quickly put him into the trap in the back of the car and not long after heard the other kitten calling out and Ruben caught that one and put her in the trap with her sibling. We brought them home and set them up in a bigger cage and went back and set the trap hoping to catch the mother cat. It is now just after 6am and Jules and I are finishing a coffee and heading back out to check the trap. It makes me very sad and angry that people don’t desex their cats, dump their unwanted cats and kittens and then everyone blames the cats for doing what they need to do to try to survive by killing wildlife and other animals. I am glad I was held up with the old horses yesterday which meant I was late and driving home in the dark, obviously I needed to be where I was, at the time I was otherwise I am quite sure we would have driven past the bodies of two little kittens this morning who were so hungry and just too young to know to get out of the way of oncoming vehicles

17.01.2022 I have no idea how I managed it but somehow I recorded most of this in slow motion BUT the good ting is you can really see Beaus facial expressions as he takes in the scent of little Brian lamb who is just laying very relaxed in my arm

16.01.2022 I am so very sorry but we just lost him It was extremely sudden and obviously unexpected and we are still in shock After starting on his breakfast with gusto as he always does he was perfectly fine and happy this morning however just after lunch he was displaying symptoms of colic ( stomach ache ). I gave him pain relief immediately and stayed with him until the vet arrived and she gave him some very strong pain relief.... Within 15 minutes he was back to his usual self with that sparkle in his eye and we were all incredibly relieved. We moved him and Denny into the barn paddock behind the house so I could watch him and make sure he didn’t regress. Luckily I was looking at him out of the kitchen window and saw the sudden huge gush of liquid come out of both of his nostrils so I called the vet and asked her to turn around and come back, she had only left 10-15 minutes earlier. While we were waiting it was very obvious something was wrong as he looked to regurgitate liquid a few times and it was coming from his stomach, horses can’t vomit so we knew this was extremely serious. We made the decision to put him to sleep immediately because there is no ‘not serious’ reason for a horse to have stomach contents pouring out of their nose and there was a danger of him drowning in it when it happened again. I have always promised him that when the time came I would make the decision and he would leave us with his dignity and not frightened or suffering. I told him it was time to have a big rest now and that I loved him, Jules kissed him on the forehead and told him she loved him, we told him that so many people adored him and what a special one of a kind boy he was and then we let him go His passing was immediate and at 3.53pm 20/09/2020 he took his last breath and his big gentle heart stopped beating and at the same time Jules watched a swallow fly down and almost touch him and then fly straight back up into the sky. Beau was 34 years old Rest In Peace now my darling xxx Forever in our hearts

11.01.2022 We had this poor little boy come into care after being found alone and barely conscious This is a very short video just to show the state he was in. He looks to be no more than an hour or so old, still has the rubber on his hooves so he has not stood up which means he has not had the vital colostrum from his mother, his umbilical cord was still wet and he was covered in mud and afterbirth. I will post an update on him in a moment, I had to post this video separate to the update as it is in a different format.

11.01.2022 LAST CHANCE FOR CALENDARS BEFORE CHRISTMAS! We still have a few 2021 FreeHearts calendars left and this will probably be your last chance to get them delivered before Christmas, so if you'd like to order please see all the instructions on the post below :) All proceeds go straight to helping the animals <3

11.01.2022 Benny is such a beautiful affectionate loving little boy Brian is also but in his life it’s she who holds the bottle of lambmilk that gets his rapt attention When I first started spending time with farmed Animals 10 years ago I remember being constantly amazed at how delightful, unique, smart and loving they were and having my preconceived ideas completely shattered on a daily basis.... Cows, Pigs, Chickens, Turkeys, Sheep Of all farmed Animals it was sheep I found to be the most misrepresented, misunderstood and underestimated of them all, such gentle peaceful loving beings that we are blessed to share our lives with

10.01.2022 When Benny met Brian

09.01.2022 A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone involved in the huge and very much appreciated donations of dog and cat food and health supplies that we picked up yesterday for our lucky babies Just one of the many lucky recipients is our gorgeous FERGUS seen here inspecting and sampling some of the contents It takes dedication from a lot of kind individuals to make a large donation scheme work as well as this one does and help so many deserving Animals ... #petbarnfoundation #MarsPetCare #royalcannin #ThankYouARC Petbarn

09.01.2022 We tried to get a video of Brian running and playing in the backyard but this was the best we could do He is a gorgeous 2 week old Pocket Rocket

08.01.2022 Freya always wags her cute little tail when she is happy Video taken just before shearing day

08.01.2022 Ahhhh Beau ! My Goodness I love him Denny is a fantastic paddock mate to dear old Beau, at 24years old she is 10 years younger than him but she is very patient and tolerant with him There are perks to being Beaus paddock mate..... you get a little feed twice a day like he does AND you get to clean up any leftovers

08.01.2022 Beaus vet Dr Isabel from Longford Equine Clinic is very happy to report that his teeth are all in good condition for an old boy and apart from a high reading of Urea on his blood test which we should be able to adjust by tweaking his feed his results were perfect Thank you to all of Beaus Guardian Angels, each of you help to pay for not only his feed, digestive supplements, rugs, farrier visits and medication but also for his 6 monthly dental check and full blood screen, all essential for a horse of his age

07.01.2022 All of the horses were treated to a session of Equine CranioSacral Therapy by the amazing Evelyn Brereton - Ev's Equine Services yesterday. Here is our darling Dorothy having hers.... For those who don’t know we rescued Dorothy from the Echuca Saleyards about 3 years ago outbidding Shepparton Meatworks who were the only other bidders on her, she was underweight, lame, had terrible hooves and teeth and a deep sadness in her eyes She is now 28 years old. We have no way of knowing what happened to her previously but she is a very untrusting, anxious and skeptical mare around humans and it is very easy to accidentally panic her ( by dropping something, making an unexpected noise or moving too quickly ) There is absolutely not a nasty bone in her body but she could inadvertently hurt someone due to the way and speed at which she panics when she does. Letting someone work on her is a huge emotional deal for Dorothy, especially someone she has never met but she did so well and responded to Ev just listening to her and working calmly and softly. You can see her central nervous system responding and her relaxing if you watch her beautiful face Thank You Evelyn for working your magic on our horses

07.01.2022 THANK YOU EVERYONE AT THIS STAGE WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH ENQUIRIES AND IT LOOKS LIKE THESE TWO LITTLE DARLINGS HAVE FOUND A HOME ASSISTED REHOME... We have been asked to help find these beautiful lucky little babies a new forever home. Meet Flossie and Dash Flossie is the smaller of the two and is a little girl and Dash is the bigger one and he is a little boy. They were both rescued as newborn orphan lambs and have been lovingly rehabilitated and nursed back to health. Sadly their carer lives in a suburban home and the time has come for these two to move to a bigger playground They are both around 5 weeks old and so are still on 3 bottles a day at this point. LOCATION IS LAUNCESTON IN TASMANIA - AUSTRALIA If you are interested in giving these two very affectionate and loving little darlings a safe loving home for life please send us a message

06.01.2022 Freya She loves her cuddles so much whether she has a full coat of wool or is in her summer sleekness

06.01.2022 . Benny was finally well enough today to have a long overdue bath so we could wash the mud, afterbirth and poo off him. Lambs take a long time to get clean and about 3 times longer to dry due to their wool but it is imperative they are dried thoroughly.... Benny quite enjoyed his bath for the most part and now he looks, feels and smells much better

05.01.2022 Congratulations to our latest FreeHearts Hall-of-Famers! Thank you to Melissa, Lisa, Martina and Tania for your kindness, we honestly could not do this without your support and Gabriel is especially grateful! Being a Guardian Angel costs $25 a month and means you will be taking an active role in providing for your chosen... animal’s care and well being, which is so important to them and to us. If you can’t decide who to choose you can be a Guardian to the Sanctuary and your donation will be used where we most need it. In return you will receive a certificate, a set of 4 beautiful bookmarks, a Guardian Angel mug, quarterly updates including exclusive photographs and 10% Discount off all FreeHearts merchandise. And of course you are most welcome to come and meet your creature in person by arrangement! And all the animals can have more than one Guardian Angel! THANK YOU!

04.01.2022 We moved Felix and Frankie goats back in with the main sheep herd today but whenever you head towards a gate the sheep come running so you have to be quick

04.01.2022 Enjoying some quiet time with Lego and Allan The mini goats were Wormed, Vaccinated and hoof trimmed last week and Floyd ( brother number 3 ) wasn’t taking a chance I might be there in preparation for another vet visit so he chose to keep his distance

04.01.2022 Thank you Everyone for your beautiful kind messages and comments after the very sudden loss of our darling boy. Life around here certainly isn’t the same without him. We know how adored he was by so many people and how special he was to you all. He just had that affect on people We are having a lovely big memorial plaque made up to put above his final resting place out in the barn paddock. It is quite fitting that the barn paddock is where he first met Dorothy ... Dorothy and Denny are the two mares who were Beaus companions during his time here. Both mares are in with other horses and are doing well, Animals are much better at accepting death than we humans are as long as they are given the opportunity to understand and grieve.

03.01.2022 Poppy gives your blankets a big two paws up Helen

03.01.2022 After warming the poor little lamb up we gave him a feed of colostrum via stomach tube as he was just too weak and had no suckle reflex. Two hours later he was able to lift his head but not hold himself up so we fed him more colostrum via stomach tube. Finally after 6 hours of warming and feeding he was able to support himself but didn’t have the balance to stay up for very long, he did however have a suckle reflex and we were able to get him to drink from a bottle. He is a h...uge lamb weighing 5.4 kilos as a newborn and it would appear he had a long difficult birth which is a common reason that Ewes abandon their lambs. He has entropian in both eyes which we are treating and he is also on antibiotics as he had a rough sounding chest and very stiff limbs. It is quite possible he has brain damage but we will see how he goes with more time, love and care. He hardly ever vocalises, has a funny shuffling little walk and trot and absolutely no instinct to follow bless him. We have named him Benedict which means ‘Blessed’ we call him Benny See more

02.01.2022 THANK YOU HELEN Our babies would like to say a huge Thank you to Helen Tyquin for her lovely parcel filled with these beautiful soft luxurious animal blankets which she made especially for our lucky Animals. Poppy needed to inspect each one before retiring to her bed with her new blanket while Betty got straight to the important task of enjoying them Thank you also for your kind donation Helen it arrived at a perfect time !... For those of you not familiar with the work Helen does and her gorgeous products for Animals please head over to her page @Helen’s House of Fur Fashions and Accessories All money raised is donated back to charity so it’s a Big win-win for the Animals

02.01.2022 We went to take a bale of hay out to the main cow herd on the weekend. Everyone is looking very relaxed and had a leisurely stroll up to take their place at the table Kruse, Beatrice, Luca, Opal, Trevor, Floyd, Josie and Bubbles

01.01.2022 Feeling quite a lot less terrified I think we have two little boys

01.01.2022 The FreeHearts backyard today

01.01.2022 The day I brought Beau home I wasn’t sure how long he would have with us, 32 years is very old for a horse and I knew it might only be 24 hours depending on what the vet found the following day, but I hoped it would be a few months at least. Enough time to make him feel better, to make him happy, to allow him to just be a horse and have a life he loved. We were blessed to have him in our lives for nearly two and a half years and he made the most of every moment.... We are still very raw and feeling the huge void he has left but we wanted to share this with you, all of the people who loved him exactly as he was for who he was. So many funny, beautiful and special memories to choose from In case anyone is wondering, yes I kept my hand on his face until he had completely left us, this can take a few moments and we wanted to be sure he wasn’t alone

01.01.2022 Somebody was VERY happy to start her Rehab yesterday
