25.01.2022 Moderation is the key? This is a common phrase and whilst it is true to an extent, moderation is a subjective term. Many people feel as though eating only one takeaway meal a day is moderation. To others, once a month is moderation. ... Some think one cup of coffee a day is moderation, whereas others think 3 or 4 is keeping it moderate. Your idea of moderation may not be leading you where you want to go. You may think that you are doing things in moderation, but if you are not getting where you want to be with your fitness, then likely you are not really as moderate as you think.

20.01.2022 Many people wait until they elusive moment when they 'have the time' to get their fitness sorted out. The trouble is, that time never comes. There is only life and all of the responsibilities we have to take care of. ... Time fills all voids and if we don't make exercise a part of the time we currently have, it is unlikely to happen down the track in some elusive future when we are no longer busy.

16.01.2022 I am not a gym person I beg to differ. You have a body and it moves. It will get stronger, faster, fitter in the same way as any ‘gym person’ will. ... The gym is a public place You are not banned from the gym. You are as welcome to use as a gym as is any other human around you. Gyms are essentially public places. Unless it is a womens only gym and you are a man of course! Only YOU are missing out One of the worst things about not going to the gym because of other people is that YOU are missing out! The big buff guy in the gym isn’t missing out on anything by you not going. It is simply YOU and YOU alone who is missing the opportunity to improve your health by not going to a gym or training location due to fear. Most of them don’t care about you The reality is, those big buff guys you are scared of? They don’t care about you working out. They are focusing on their own workouts and making themselves monsters. A newbie lifting some weights in the gym is not going to phase them too much. Even if they DID care, why do you? They are the ones making judgements based on nothing. They are the ones taking time out of their day to judge another person who is TRYING to improve themselves. But in all honesty, every one of these big scary looking people I have met has been a kind and considerate person. Don’t let the few grunters and sweaty guys ruin your day, they certainly aren’t letting you ruin theirs! It is FEAR It is fear and fear alone that is stopping you from going to the gym I get it. I felt the same many years ago. These lies are holding you back We need you to take back the gyms The developed world is facing a crisis in health. We are dying and maiming ourselves through our inactivity. There is no way to make this nice. Our sedentary lives have been proven time and time again to be causing the downfall of our health and well-being. Don’t be fooled by life expectancies it doesn’t tell you how WELL you are living just that you are alive. It doesn’t show you the endless doctors’ visits, surgeries, drugs and limitations that our modern sedentary lives are placing on us. Gyms are not the complete answer but they are a part of the solution. We need to be taking back the gyms as a place where everybody is accepted! The more people who go to the gym who use their membership and who train properly the better we will all be. So I urge you to face your fears and get to the gym!

15.01.2022 When I first tried to bench press 15+ years ago, I found the bar to be a struggle. 20kg of metal and I found it heavy to lift. Should I have stopped doing it because my starting point was low? Because other guys in the gym could do far more than me?...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Waiting until you are all sorted out before sorting out your fitness? Until you 'have the time', 'have the energy' or have any of the things you think you need to get started? If there is one thing that is common across life, it is that you will never really have things that sorted out....Continue reading

13.01.2022 How long will you sit on the fence? Seeing another fitness program, thinking about joining a gym, thinking about getting started on that running program, thinking of starting a health kick, wanting to lose the gut but always putting it off for another day. My knee hurts, its not the right time, once I finish this busy part at work, once Winter is over, when the days are longer, when the days are shorter, when my kids are older, when I have more free time, when I am retired.... This thinking can last years, or even decades! The most fearful part of getting started on the path to better fitness is sitting around waiting to decide what to do. Once you actually take the plunge you will find it is not as scary as you thought. Decide one way or another and you will free yourself from all the umming and ahhing. If you don't want to get fitter, lose the gut and get your fitness on track then go with it! If you DO want to get fitter, then take the plunge and get started!

12.01.2022 Almost everyone comes into a fitness transformation with high expectations. These expectations have been set throughout our lives with a big impact from all types of traditional media and now with social media too. There is an expectation that getting fit, especially losing weight, can be done rapidly by simply following certain steps. In training many hundreds of people over the years, I can safely say less than a handful had even close to realistic expectations at the beg...Continue reading

12.01.2022 We have all heard the idea that your metabolism 'slows down' as you get older but is this really true? While your overall calorie needs may be lower, it is not because you are 'getting older'. For most people, once they leave school there is a progressive decline in their exercise levels and also muscle mass. ... Your metabolism has only slowed because it is in a body that has less muscle and moves far less day to day. This is changeable! You CAN gain very good amounts of muscle well beyond ages people consider 'old'. Your metabolism slowing down is not a guarantee.

09.01.2022 Don't really like gyms? Me too! In fact I hated gyms so much that I made my own in the garage at home and started training people there. Eventually as this grew I was able to expand and build a bigger facility where 8 years later I get to help people everyday to pursue fitness without the BS of the rest of the industry. ... I always saw how great fitness transformations were for the average person but the industry surrounding it wasn't very inviting. The type of people who came to me had either never been to gyms or left because they didn't like the culture there. This works well as it meant everybody in my gym was the opposite of the average gym person! They weren't there to show off or intimidate. They were there to get a good workout in, encourage other people there and then go home. The results of my clients didn't require supplements and endless BS. Just real training for real people! If you want to find out more about how we work and how we can help you get fit without the wankiness of regular fitness then simply click 'learn more', enter in your details and I will be in touch to discuss your situation!

08.01.2022 What does it truly take to lose weight? The most common goal in the fitness world is to lose weight. I would go as far to say it is the single most common goal in any context! I thought this photo of Kendall was fitting as losing 80kg is a big deal and he would have had to deal with all of the points below. ...Continue reading

07.01.2022 Feeling like there is never enough time to get what you want done? Always feeling rushed or like you can’t complete things? Turning up late? Time is one of the biggest excuses people give for not getting fit. It is also the excuse given to a range of other aspects of life. Time often IS an excuse because it feels that way. Mismanagement of the time we have means feeling overwhelmed and using ‘not enough time’ as the reason. Now, there are cases where time is truly an issue....Continue reading

06.01.2022 Are you stressed? Stress is a common problem and this year has upped the ante! Many of us get used to being stressed all the time that we are not even sure of what it feels like to not be stressed. It can become so chronic that is simply a part of our lives. The stress response system is one that evolved in an environment far different from the one we live in now. Stress is a suitable response to immediate, short-term threats to our survival. Before civilisation, we would ...Continue reading

04.01.2022 It is never too late to start or start again with a fitness journey. In almost a decade of training people I have only come across a handful that have never tried to lose weight or get in shape in the past. Many people who have been fit in the past get upset and disappointed that they are now less fit than they were, are not training as much or are back to poor eating habits.... The reality is there are many situations in life that can throw us off course with our fitness. The more ingrained the healthy habits we have, the less likely we are to deviate but even then a big change can be a problem. Changing a job, having children, separations, illness, injury. All of these things can lead to throwing us off track with our fitness efforts and defaulting back to what we did in the past. The only way this becomes a problem long-term is by allowing the life-change to result in a permanent change in your habits. The great part about starting again is that it often takes far less time to get fit the second or third time around. You already know how to move, you know a lot more about yourself and what works and doesn't work and you will find that after a few gym sessions you are feeling far better than you thought you would! Here are some ways to get started or started again! Focus on the future It is easy to dwell on what you used to do or the fitness you used to have and so on. The trouble with this for most people is that it is hardly motivating. Instead, try to focus on what you can still do now! What could you achieve if you got back into the gym? How would you feel if you were fit and healthy once more? Remember what worked well last time Consider what aspects of your life were going well last time you were fit and healthy. Were you eating a certain way? Were you going to a certain gym? Were you training with certain friends? Piecing together what worked in the past means you have a head start this time around. You can start to implement the things that did work and remove the things that didn't! Also remember WHY you started before! Was it for health reasons? To feel more energised? We all have our unique reasons to get fit so consider why you did it before and if that still holds true today. Take the first step again When you got fit before you had to take that first step. It might have been stepping into the gym, writing a shopping list or organising some workout times. There is no failure on a fitness journey, only temporary setbacks that will be alleviated once action is taken in the forward direction again. Take that first step again and your fitness journey will continue!

02.01.2022 Supplements are almost all useless. There are many sellers of supplements that claim the mystical powers of these white powders and pills. The reality is, most supplements are modern day snake oil. Are there situations in which supplements are needed in order to get the best results? Sure.... But in these situations the type of supplement needed is specific to the individual. The reason I do not sell supplements is that I do not want to be attached to a brand and therefore have my recommendations tainted by adherence to one specific company or line of supplements. I don’t want to have the pressure to sell things I know to be useless to those who don’t need them. I would prefer to be able to recommend the ideal supplement for a client in the right situation without the pressure to recommend a brand or supplement I make money from. For 90% of people who come to see me, supplements are completely unnecessary for them to get their best results. Supplements are the magic potion that we all wish existed. The promise of taking a scoop of powder in a drink and being stronger, without having done the work. Or losing weight without having done the work. They are a promise of a shortcut that doesn’t actually get you anywhere. Those who sell supplements will respond emotionally to reading this. They will tell you that their pills and powders are the best ones around and not like ‘the other ones’ on the market. They are purer, more organic, more special than other supplements and so much more effective. They will ignore the mountains and mountains of scientific literature proving the ineffectiveness of 99% of these compounds on human health and fitness. Over the years I have met with clients who have spent unimaginable amounts of money on supplements that had no effect on them. Once you have gotten your diet, exercise and lifestyle in check, you MAY consider adding in a few supplements to optimize things. Don’t believe the hype with supplements. There are enormous marketing forces to make you believe they are effective but a deeper look into the research will show clearly how ineffective they are!

02.01.2022 Here is what Kendall had to say about his awesome weight loss journey: "In March of 2018 I weighed in at the heaviest I had ever been - 164kg. Now in June 2020 I weigh 86kg, which is a loss of 78kg. If you have a lot of weight to lose, here are a few things I have learned along my journey which may help you.... Firstly, if you are morbidly obese like I was, you almost certainly have an addiction to food. Get yourself into some kind of talk therapy or counselling to find the root cause of the issue. It will be the best money you will ever spend. Have the right mindset about what you actually want to achieve. Your main goal should always be to change your lifestyle, not simply to lose weight. Develop healthy eating and exercise habits, and don't focus entirely on the number on the scale. In fact, it's better to weigh yourself once per week or less - and don't let the number you see dictate your mood. Remember that number is only a data point. It's simply an indication of how well the changes you have made are working. Diet is far more important to weight loss than exercise. Don’t think just because you did a workout today that you can binge on whatever you like. It's possible to eat in ten minutes what would take hours of working out to burn off. Make it easier on yourself by not eating so much in the first place. That said, do not neglect your workouts. Health and fitness go hand in hand. Remember that health happens in the kitchen, and fitness happens in the gym. You will experience some discomfort, which is normal. You are used to eating an excess of food, so naturally you will now be hungry sometimes. But don’t worry, you will survive. The first day of this is the hardest. Once you have passed it, no other day will be as difficult. Calculate your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). This is how much energy (food) your body will burn per day. Subtract about 1/5th from that number, and eat that much per day to lose weight. You will have to track (at least roughly) your calories for this, which is a very good habit to develop anyway. This takes all the guesswork out of how much you should actually be eating. Don’t try to take shortcuts by starving yourself. You will only end up binging on more food than you would have eaten anyway. Any changes you make need to be sustainable long term so that you actually develop better habits instead of dieting."
